My invention relates to receivers for ashes of cigars, cigarettes and the like, and particularly those suitable for mounting upon a table, chair-arm or the like.

In accordance with my invention there is carried by or secured to a board, constituting a part of a table, chair, or other article of furniture, in register with an opening therein, and preferably on its under side, a supporting member upon which is detachably carried or secured a receptacle for ashes discharged thereinto through the opening aforesaid from the top or upper side of the board; further in accordance with my invention the opening in the board is provided with a cover member, itself having an aperture through which the ashes are discharged into the receptacle; and more particularly, the aperture in the cover member is provided with a clov sure member, which, in open position, serves as a support for cigars, cigarettes or the like.

My invention resides in structure of the character hereinafter described and claimed.

for an illustration of one of the various forms it may take, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 2 is a top plan View; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, partly in elevation, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawing, 1 is a board of any suitable material such as wood, paper- 35 board, beaverboard or other composition. It may be the top of a card-table or other table, the arm of a chair, or in general a board or member of any article of furniture. In the example illustrated the top 1 is that of a cardtable, generally consisting of beaverboard, paperboard or other composition. In the top 1 is an opening 2 around whose periphery on the under side of the board is provided the plate or member 3 having a downwardly extending flange 4 to which is detachably secured by any suitable means the ash receptacle or tray 5, which may have at its upper end the lip or flange 6, preferably of reduced diameter or offset inwardly from the detachw able connection freely to enter the aperture 2 in the board 1. In the example illustrated the detachable means for the receiver 5 are screw threads on its exterior below the lip or flange 6, making threading engagement at 7 with the threads on the inner side of the downwardly extending flange 4 upon the plate 3.

The member 3 may be secured to the board 1 b the screw bolts or equivalent elements 8, which may at the same time secure upon the top or board 1 the cover member 9, of metal, extending over or closing the opening 2 in the member 1. In the member 9 is provided an aperture 10 through which ashes of cigars, cigarettes or the like may be discharged and held in the receptacle or tray 5. The opening 10 may be provided with a closure member 11 having ears 12 by which it is pivoted upon the pivot pin or bar 13, itself mounted on the ears or lugs 14 on the under side of the cover member 9. In Figs. 1 and 2 the member 11 is shown in position closing the aperture 10 in the plate 9, which latter may be provided with the depression 15 extending to the edge of the opening 11, for reception of the nail of a finger for raising the closure member 11 upon its pivotal support to upright position indicated in Fig. 3. With the member 11 so in open position, ashes may be flecked into the receptacle 5 through aperture 10, and a. cigar or cigarette 16 may be rested upon the pllate 9 in one of the recesses 17 in its upper e ge.

The receptacle 5 may be emptied by detaching it from the member 3, whereupon it may be restored to position indicated, with the lip or flange 6 engaging or closely approaching the plate 9, and in any event serving to prevent access of ashes to the detachable connection, which in this case comprises the screw threads above referred to.

For brevity, the term cigar as employed in the appended claims is generic, and includes cigarettes and equivalent articles.

What I claim is:

1. In combination with a board having an opening, a supporting member secured thereto adjacent said opening, an ash receptacle detachably secured to said support in register with said opening, and a flange on said receptacle ofi'set inwardly from said detach- Serial No. 527,988.

2. In combination with a board having an opening, a supporting member secured thereto adjacent said opening, an ash receptacle detachably secured to said support in register with said opening, a member upon the top of said board having anaperture comand a. flange on said receptacle offset inwardly from said detachable connection and extending toward said apertured member.

3. In combination with a board having an opening, a supporting member secured thereto adjacent said opening, an ash receptacle detachably secured to said support in register with said opening, a member upon the top of said board having an aperture communicating with said receptacle, and a flange on said receptacle offset inwardly from said detachable connection and abutting against said apertured member.

4. In combination with a board having an opening, a supporting member secured on its under side adjacent said opening, an ash receptacle detachably secured to said support in register with said opening, a member upon the top of said board extending over said opening and itself having an aperture communicating with said receptacle, and a flat closure member pivoted to said cover member for closing said aperture.

5. In combination with a board having an opening, a supporting member secured on its under side adjacent said opening, an ash receptacle detachably secured to said support in register with said opening, a member upon the top of said board extending over said opening and itself having an aperture communicating with said receptacle, and a closure member pivoted to said cover member for closing said aperture, said cover member having a depression adjacent the edge of the aperture therein for access to said closure -member for raising it to open position.

6. In combination with a board having an opening, a supporting member secured on its under side adjacent said opening, an ash receptacle detachably secured to said support in register with said opening, a member upon the top of said board extending over said opening and itself having an aperture communicating with said receptacle, and a flat closure member pivoted tosaid cover mem ber for closing said aperture, said closure member when in open position serving as a rest for a cigar.

7. In combination with a board having an opening, a supporting member secured on its under side adjacent said opening, an ash receptacle detachably secured to said support in register with said opening, a member upon the top of said board extending over said opening and itself having an aperture communicating wlth said receptacle, and a closure member pivoted to said cover member for closing said aperture, said closure member having in its upper edge a depression for holding a cigar when in open position.

8. In combination with a board having an opening, a supporting member secured to the under side of the board and having a de pending screw-threaded portion adjacent said opening, an ash receptacle in register with said opening and having a screwthreaded portion detachably engaging said depending screw threaded portion, a cover plate upon the top of said board extending over said opening and having an aperture communicating with said receptacle, the aperture in said plate being smaller than the opening in the receptacle, a closure plate pivoted to said cover plate for closing said aperture, said closure plate having. a notched edge portion for holding a cigar when in open position, and said receptacle having a flanged portion extending through said opening in the board and in close proximity to said cover plate.
