sidewalks and the like; the invention havingfor its object the provision of a device which may be manually operated and which involves removable means to adapt the device for the removal of loose or unpacked snow, while, on the other hand, permitting said means to be quickly applied or attached to the main body 1 portion when required; said means being constructed to provide a plurality of cutting surfaces formed to cut into and beneath the packed snow and ice. .7 I
7, One object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which will be inexpensive in manufacture, while at the same time possessing the necessary strength.
I The objects and advantages of. my invention, as well as the advantages inherent in the an invention, will all be readily comprehended from the following detailed description of the accompanying. drawing wherein: I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my 1mproved device, with a portion of the handle 26 broken away. i I
Figure 2 is a top plan View with portions of the handle broken away. I
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the main body portion of the device, illustrating the initial bending; the diagonal dotted lines showingwhere it is to be bent backward so as to disposethe side portions in the opposite direction. v I
- Figure 4: is a perspective view of said main portion, viewed from the rear side.
namely a thin gauge and preferably rectangular steel plate of desired length.-. The plate 10 is then bent at its transverse center indicatedat 11 and the sheet on opposite sides 5 of'the vertical axis or line 11 is then bent in Figure 5 is a front view of the'intermedithe opposite direction along the diagonal or upwardly diverging lines indicated at 12 l2 to permit the portions intermediate of the central line 11 and the two diverging lines 12, 12 to fold into parallel relation and thus provide the two side shoe portions or wings 13, 13 which slope rearwardly on opposite sides of the vertical median line at any desired angle. 2 v
Greasing or bending the plate in the manner described provides the device with the required slope rearwardly toward the top longitudinal edge and the forward side with a forwardly presented shearing nose or wedge at 14. and positions the lower longitudinal edges 15 of each wing or side section 13, 13, in the same horizontal plane. I
In order that the entire lower longitudinal. edge of the body portion may be in the same horizontal plane, the lower edge of-the plate intermediate of the central crease or fold 11 and the two diagonal folds 12, 12 is cut away in the inverted V-shape mannerindicated at 16 in Figures 3 and 4..
It is apparent that by folding the sheet 76 backupon itself intermediate of the folds or bends 11 and 12,12 provides the body por-. tion with the rearwardly extending flange portion 17 to which the lower end of a suitablehandle 18 is preferably removably se-' cured, as for example by the bolts indicated at 19;the handle 18 being shown as preferably slotted at its lower end to receivethe' attaching flange portion 17 therein, thus permitting the bolts 19 to firmly clamp the u handle to the shoe or main body portion 10 and atthe desired upwardly rearward inclination. I
The handle 18 is also braced and rigidly held in place by the downwardly and rearwardly sloping brace 20. The brace 20 is" shown in the form of a flat metal bar bent around the handle 18 as indicated at 21; the handle encircling portion 21 being firmly clamped about the handle 18 by boltand nut, as indicated at 22. A 1
The brace bar20 has its ends bent into the diverging manner shown in Figures 11 and 2 and the ends in turn riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the transversely disposed wing brace bar or member 23, which may be in the form of an angle bar or of any desired construction, with the ends of the bar 23 welded, riveted, or otherwise suitably secured to the respective wing portions 13, 18.
The wings 13, 13 are thus not only firmly supported at their rear ends to withstand rearward flexing pressure, butthehandle 18 is also firmly held in place.
The device, as thus described, constitutes a complete snow remover adapted for use in removing loose or unpacked snow; the upwardly and rearwardly sloping sides affording less resistance and causing the snow to be thrown toward opposite sides of the device.
'Wl1en the snow has become more or less packed, due to travel thereover, or-ice has been formed therebeneath, the lower straight edges of'the wing portions 13, 13 of the body would be apt to slide over the packed or trodden portions of the snow by reason of the resistance oiiered by the packed snow or ice.
In order to adapt the device to conditions of this sort and to provide a device which will entirely renrove'the packed'as well as the loose snow'and ice, I provide an auxiliary member or shoe 24 which consists of a rectangular sheet metal plate bent centrally transversely to conform to the main body portion '10, see
Figure 5.
The lower longitudinal edge of the shoe 24 is bent outwardly horizontally and this horizontal portion is then slit or cut at predetermined distance apart transversely of "the horizontal portion to provide a plurality of nose ofthe device) to the inner end'of the next adjacent slit thus providing each tooth or partially severed portion with the upwardly disposed somewhat triangular portion 26. It isapparent from theconstruction shown and described thateach tooth 25 is thus provided with two cutting edges, namely a lower horizontally cutting edge at 27, disposed at an angle to the line of travel, and the upwardly andrearwardly sloping cutting edge at the forward edge of the triangular or diagonally bent portion 26, which edge will bedisposed in a direction generally parallel with the forward nose of the device. v
, With my improved cutting shoe attached to the device, it is apparent that the forward horizontal edge of each tooth 25 will ride along the pavement and the packed snow or ice will be cut into small particles by the forwardedges of the upwardly bent diagonal portions 26 of the teeth.
. The plurality of small teeth cause the hard packed snow and ice to be quickly severed or broken into small particles without requiring undue power on the part of the user of the asat 28-, and with the lower toothed portion preferably arranged beneath the plane of the lower edge of the body portion, as shown in Fi ures 1 and 2.
I have shown and described this shoe 24 consisting of a single sheet metal plate, although it may be composed of separate sections or plates, and the preferred eXemplification of the invention has been described in terms employed merelyforpurposes of description, as modifications may be made without, however, departing from the spirit of my invention.
