1 Claim. (Cl. 37-142) This invention relates generally to teeth of excavating implements, but has reference more particularly to teeth having replaceable points.
Teeth of excavating implements are usually sold as one-piece units of fairly large size and weight, which are fairly expensive, so that replacement of an entire tooth or unit or a number of units becomes a costly matter.
Moreover, replacement of entire units is sometimes difficult, since the means for attaching the units to the excavating implements are, in many cases, frozen or rusted to a point which requires a great deal of labor for removal of the teeth.
The present invention has, as its primary object, the provision of a novel tooth for such implements which has incorporated therein a point, which is quickly and easily removable from the body of the tooth, when the point becomes worn, so that only the point need be replaced, thus enabling the body of the tooth to be used on a somewhat permanent basis. In this way, the replacement point, which is considerably smaller and lighter than the body or base of the tooth, can be utilized for repointing, and the cost of replacement greatly reduced.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tooth of the character described, in which the replacement point is so attached to the body of the tooth that removal and replacement can be effected with simple tools, and in an expeditious manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tooth of the character described, in which the replacement point is attached to the body of the tooth as to resist displacement from said body in several directions.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a tooth for excavating implements, embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the tooth;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the replacement point.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the tooth will be seen to comprise a permanent body or base or adaptor 1, and a replacement point, generally indicated by reference numeral 2.
The base or adaptor 1 is of generally wedge-shaped form being characterized by parallel side walls 3 and 4, and top and bottom walls 5 and 6, which converge toward each other from the rear portion of the adaptor to the forward portion thereof.
The adaptor 1 is provided with a tongue or tenon 7 having a face 8 which is substantially parallel with the bottom wall 6 of the adaptor and a face 9 which is substantially parallel with the top wall 5 of the adaptor. Rearwardly of the tongue 8, the adaptor is provided with a recess 10, one wall of which is formed by the face 9,

and the other wall of which is designated 11, the latter being substantially parallel with the wall 5 of the adaptor. The adaptor is further provided with pairs of spaced threaded openings 12, the axes of which are substantially normal to the face 9 of the adaptor and extend from the face 9 to the wall 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, these openings serving a purpose to be presently described.
The replacement point 2 is of wedge-like form, having a top face 13 which is substantially flush with the wall c 5 of the adaptor, and a bottom face 14 which is substantially flush with the Wall 6 of the adaptor, these faces converging to a working edge 15.
The point 2 is provided in its rearward portion with a recess 16 which is adapted to snugly receive and embrace the tongue or tenon 7 of the adaptor, and with an extension 17 provided with a tongue or tenon 18 adapted to be snugly received in and embraced by the recess 10 of the adaptor.
The extension 17 of the replacement point is provided with spaced unthreaded openings 19, which are counterbored, as at 20, for the reception of the socket heads 21 of bolts 22, so that when the point 2 is assembled with the adaptor 1 in the manner shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the openings 19 are in registration with the openings 12, and the bolts may be threaded into the openings 12, as shown in Fig. 3, to maintain the parts in assembled relation.
It is thus seen that I have provided a novel tooth for excavating implements, which has incorporated therein a point which is quickly and easily removable from the body of the tooth, when the point becomes worn, so that only the point need to be replaced. This enables the body of the tooth to be used on a permanent basis, and the replacement point, which is considerably smaller and lighter than the body or base of the tooth, utilized for repointing. This greatly reduces the cost of replacement.
The replacement point is so attached to the body of the tooth that removal and replacement can be eifected with simple tools, and in an expeditious manner.
Due to the relative angularity of the parts 7, 16, 18 and 10, the shearing and other stresses are well-balanced and evenly distributed, and maximum resistance to displacement of the point from the adaptor is thus provided.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention, herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a tooth for excavating implements and the like, a base of generally wedge-shaped form characterized by parallel side walls and flat top and bottom walls which converge toward each other from the rear portion of said base to the front portion thereof, said base provided with a tongue having a face which lies in a plane which is substantially parallel with the bottom wall of said base, a second face which lies in a plane which is substantially parallel with the top wall of said base and extends rearwardiy to a point such that its area is considerably greater than the area of said first face, and a front face which lies in a plane which is perpendicular to the bottom wall of said base, said base provided adjacent the rear edge of said second face with a recess having spaced walls parallel with each other and with the top wall of said base, and provided adjacent to the rear edge of said first face with a third face extending from said edge perpendicularly to said bottom wall; a replacement point for said base, said point being of wedge-like form having a top face which is substantially flush with the top wall of said base, a bottom face which is substantially flush with the bottom Wall of said base, said point having in its rearward portion a recess adapted to snugly receive the tongue of said base and provided also With an extension having a tongue adapted to be snugly received in the recess of said base; and means for removably securing said point to said base, said means comprising laterally and longitudinally spaced bolts extending through said extension and into said base, said bolts having their axes substantially perpendicular to the plane of sunk below the plane of the top face of said point.
