vacuum (anemia Application filed November 14, 1928. Serial No. 319,894.
This invention relates to a new and improved vacuum'cleaner, and it is the principal object of my invention to provide a vacuum cleaner dispensing with the customary unsightly bag and other features and presenting an outer ornamental and pleasing appearance, harmonizing with the other pieces of furniture in a room, and not betraying its real purpose.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a vacuum cleaner in form of an article of furniture allowing the storage of all accessories used in connection therewith in one of its compartments.
A further object of 'my-invention-is the provision of a vacuum cleaner of this character equipped with suitable means to collect the dirt and allowing the escape of the pressure air. a
A still further object of my invention] is the provision of a vacuumcleaner of tliis type, allowing the depositing of dirtaccumulated or taken up by a mop by shaking the same into one compartment of the cleaner from which it is removed by suction.
It is furthermore also one of the objects of my invention to provide a receptacle for the reception of the dirt from a mop having a self closing cover and allowing the removal of the dirt by a vacuum cleaner while the pressure air can escape through a suitable filter.
The invention has also as one of its objects the arrangement of suitable filters of novel and improved construction for filtering the pressure air 'while allowing a free escape thereof.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully apparent as the description thereof proceeds and will then be specifically defined in the appended claims. 1
In the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a sectional side elevation of a vacuum cleaner constructed according to my invention. i
Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the same on line 22 of Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the cleaner on line 33 of Figure 1.
Fig. 4 is a side elevationof a mop cleaner or dirt receiver.
Fig. 5 is a cross section through the receptacle, Figure 4, on line 55 of Figure 4.
Fig. 6 is a plan view thereof. As illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, my improved vacuum cleaner comprises a housing 10 on wheels 11 and having the outer polished do" appearance of a piece of furniture in any desired or preferred color and shape, tosuit the, general 'milieuof a room, and thus forming a decorative piece of furniture rather than having the usual unsightly shape of the o5 vacuum cleaners now in common .use. 3
The casing or housing 10 is divided by a longitudinally extending false bottom or partition 12 into a lower chamber 13 for the reception of the motor and suction pump in 7' housing 14 and a median "chamber. The
equipped with a strainer 16 for preventing the entrance of nails etc., into the motor housing and allowing the attachment of the suction pipe or hose 17 in the usual well known manner.
Another bottom or partition 18 inclined towards its center forms with false bottom 12 the median chamber 19 into which the discharge pipe 20 of the cleaner opens so that all dirt collected or sucked in by the cleaner during its operation will collect in chamber 19, while the surplus of pressure air escapes through a filter 21 in the top wall of a receptacle 22 hinged as at 23 to the bottom wall 12, and adapted to be'pulled out by means of a handle .24, and through opening 25' in theend wall of housing '10 into the atmosphere.
The filters 22 and 25 consist preferably of P a pair of parallel spaced metal plates be tween which rayon or other suitable filtering material is interposed, and the plates are 7 provided with suitable perforations allowing a ready escape of the pressure air. A cover 26 of any suitable construction closes the housing 10 on top and forms with a the bottom 18 a chamber 27 in communication with the suction pipe 15 by means of a short pipe 28', the upper mouth of which is closed by means of a cover plate 29 hingedly secured to bottom 18.
This compartment 27 is intended to receive the dirt from a mop and for allowing the removal of the same by suction through pipe 28 into the lower compartment 19, when cover plate 29 is open while the pressure air escapes through the filter 25.
The compartment 27 furthermore when the apparatus is not in use, serves for the storage of suction hose, and other accessories used in connection with the vacuum cleaner.
As illustrated in Figures 4 to 6,the housing 30 on wheels 31 is closed on top by a bi-partite cover 32, 33 hinged to the side walls of housing 30 as at 32' and 33 and normally kept in closing position by means of the springs 34.
The inner meeting edges of the cover plate 32, 33 are lined with a cushioning material such as 34.
The housing 30 has a perforated bottom 35 to allow the dirt collecting in chamber or housing 30 into a drawer 36 by means of a vacuum cleaner the suction hose of which is attached to nipple. 37.
The operation of my novel and improved vacuum cleaner will be entirely clear from the above description and simultaneous in spection of the drawing, and it will be evident, that the operation of the vacuum cleaners motor and suction pump in the usual well known manner will draw all dirt and impurities from carpets, walls, etc., into compartment 19, while the suction air will escape through filters 21 and 25 into theatmosphere, the accumulated dirt may then be conveniently removed by opening receptacle If a mop etc. is to be cleaned, the dirt contained therein is removed therefrom by shaking it into compartment 27 wherefrom the same may be practically constructed volved.
Having thus described my invent1on, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A suction cleaner comprising a box, a cover therefor, a partition dividingsaid box into upper and lower compartments, said partition being inclined from a pair of opposite edges downwardly towards its center line, aconduit opening into the upper coinpartment at the level of said center line of the partition and connecting the compartments, means for sucking dirt through said pipe from said upper to said lower compartment, a receptacle into which the dirt is discharged pivoted to a wall of said lower compartmcnt, and a cover for said receptacle having a plurality of filtering openings to permit the escape of air from said lower compartmen s Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York this 8th day of November, A; D. 1928. I
FRED BERNI-IARD.
it is removed after closing of cover 29 by the vacuum cleaner into compartment 19 and removed therefrom as above, the surplus of pressure air escaping in the aforementioned manner. Whennot in use the compartment 27is used for the storage of the suction hose, and other accessories of the vacuum cleaner.
It will therefore be evident that I have produced a vacuum cleaner of pleasing and the wheels will permit a ready transporta-' tion of the instrument from place to place.
It will be understood that I have disclosed the preferred form of my device only as one example of the many ways in which gist of my invention and the principles in-
