Referring to the drawing, the device comprises a container 10 having front, back, and ateral walls 12, 14 and-16, and openvat the upper nd, as indicated'at 18, through which the soiled articles are received. The container 10 is preferably of greater height than width and depth, and rectangular in' cross-section.
One wall, preferably wall 12, at the upper portion thereof is provided with a portion or panel 20 for ventilating the interior, preferably consisting of an opening covered by a reticulated or foraminated grille 22 or the like, and said well at the lower portion thereof-is provided with "an opening 24, larger than the opening 18, through The opening 24 is normally closed by the door 26 hinged on a vertical axis 28, the door in the closed position thereof lying in the plane of the front wall and swinging outwardly and laterally out of the way, as indicated in broken lines, to permit of the removal of the articles. The door 26 is retained in closed position by a suitable latch 30. z
A separate compartment 32 is formed within the receptacle 10 at one side of the upper portion thereof above the opening 24 for receiving smaller articles of laundry such as collars, handkerchiefs, stockings, and the like. i f
The compartment 32 is open at the top, as indicated at 34, to permit of the reception of the smaller articles, and a part of'the ventilating portion 20 serves as the front wall thereof, the main chamber 36 and the compartment 32 being ventilated by the common portion 20.
The article receiving opening 34 into the compartment 32.and the opening 18 into the main chamber 36 are normally closed by the common door 38 hinged at 40 upon a transverse horizontal axis, and capable of being swung back out of the way, as indicated in broken lines. The door 38 is provided with a knob 42. I
If desired, the inner walls of the receptacle may be provided with books and a laundry bag of, canvas or any other suitable material, attached in open position withinthe receptacle on said hooks, so that when soiled laundry is deposited in said receptacle it will fall into and be collected in said bag, andwhen it is desired to empty the laundry receptacle for the purpose of laundering the articles collected therein, the entire contents of the receptacle may be conveniently removed at one time by simply detaching and removing from the receptacle the bag containing the collected laundry.
The laundry receptacle of thepresent invention may be made in any shape or size, and may be constructed of .sheet metal, wood, fibre or any other suitable material.

enables a saving of time and trouble, which the busy housekeeper can particularly appreciate.
I claim: t l. A laundry receiving device comprising a; container having an opening at the top thereof through which articles to be laundered are received into the container, and an opening in the lower portion of a vertical wall thereof through which the received articles 'are removed, said container from the upper opening to the lower one forming a continuously open passage of suflicient capacity to permit of the articles freely dropping to the bottom thereof and accumulating therein, a compartment open at the top disposed within the confines of the wall portions of said container forming said passage and occupying a portion of the space within the container at the upper portion thereof above the lower opening, the remaining portion of the space at the upper portion providing passage for the soiled articles past said compartment into the lower portion of the container, a closure common to said top openings, and a closure for the lower opening.
2. A laundry receiving device comprising a receptacle open at the top for the reception of the larger soiled articles, and having an opening at the lower portion of a vertical wall thereof for the removal of the accumulated soiled articles, said container from the upper opening to the lower one forming a continuously open passage of sufficient capacity to permit of the articles freely dropping to the bottom thereof and accumulated therein, a separate compartment disposed within the confines of the passage forming wall portions of said container above the lower opening and being open at the top, said compartment occupying a portion of the space within said receptacle, and the remaining portion of said space contiguous to said compartment constituting a part of said first named passage for passing the soiled articles past said compartment into the lower portion of the container, a ventilating portion on a vertical wall of said container providing communication from the outside with the interior of said container and said compartment, a closure common to said top and compartment openings, and a closure for said lower opening.
