UNI-TED PATENT OFFICE...
SOOBATES SOHOLFIELD, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN POCKET-KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,051, dated February 6, 1877; application filed January 2, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOGRATES SCHOLFIELD, of Providence, in. the State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in Pocket- Knives, of which the following is a specification: 7
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of a readily-detachable knifeblade with the screw extension mechanism commonly employed in pencil-cases.
In ordinary pocket-knives the blade is made as a permanent fixture to the handle, and, when broken or worn by repeated sharpening, cannot be readily changed for another. So, in order to construct a knife for light use, in which the blade can be made at the minimum of cost, and be readily inserted and taken out of the handle at will, I have arranged the above-mentioned improvement, the blades being.'-in this case, made so cheaply that when dull from use they may, in ordinary cases, be profitably thrown away and a new sharp one inserted, the change being readily effected by any person in a few seconds, and without the 3 use of tools.
Figure l is a longitudinal section. is a cross-section taken in the line a: as. Fig 3 is a view showing the slotted tube in which the knife and carrier move. Fig. 4 is a view showing the tubular screw used toimpart the proper movement. to the carrier. Fig. 5 is a sectional View of the detachable blade and carrier. Fig. 6 is a top view of a blade and carrier.
Inthe drawing, A is the blade, removably attached to the carrier B by means of a screwthread, 0, as shown in Fig. 5. At the rear of the carrier B is placed the pin D, which moves in the slot E of the tube F, upon one end of Fig. 2
which is fixed the holding-tip G. At the opposite end of the tube F is placed the collar H. Between the collar H and tip G is placed the loosely-turnin g tubular screw I, which, by engaging with the pin D, serves to move the carrier and knife back and forth within the tube F. At either end of the slot E are made the notches J and J, which serve to hold the carrier,'and prevent it from being forced from its proper position at either extreme of its movement. The outer case K is made open at its forward end, and larger in diameter than the collar H and holding-tip Gr, so that it can be passed over them both, and be secured to the screw I by means of the collars L L, at tached to the screw. At the rear of the case K may be placed the ring M.
By taking the tip G between the thumb and forefinger of one hand, and then turning-the case K by means of the thumb and forefinger of the other hand, the knife A may be protruded from the case or handle, or retracted, at pleasure.
--When the blade A has become injured by wear, or has been accidentally broken, it may be removed by simply unscrewing the blade from the carrier, and a new one can then be screwed in its place.
I claim as my invention The removable and readily-detachable knifeblade A, combined with the carrier B by means of a screw, 0, the whole being operated by means of the pin D, slotted tube F, and tubular screw I, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
SOORAIES SOHOLFIELD.
