' Patented Feb.6, 1877.
INVENTOB E ERS. FHOTO-LITHOGRAPH Eh. WASHXNGTON. D, c.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICEQ JULIUS BROWN, OF NEW YORK, n. Y., nssrenon To HIMSELF AND MORITZ LEIPZIGER.
IMPROVEMENT IN ARTIFICIAL FEATHERS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,984, dated February 6, 1877; application filed December 30, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs BROWN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Artificial Fur Feathers, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my artificial feathers. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line a; m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved artificial feather, which consists of strips of skin with the natural fur or down on them, the sheet of thin sheet-rubber or other adhesive material, the back, and the wire or whalebone, as hereinafter fully described.
A are strips of fur arranged in the shape of a feather. The strips A may be made with the hairs all lying in the same direction, or running at different angles from a central division-line, The strips A may be all of the same kind of fur, or they may be of dilferent kinds, and of the same or different colors, as may be desired. The back of the feather is formed of cloth 0, or other suitable material. Upon the back 0 is placed a sheet, B, of thin sheet-rubber, cut into the proper shape and size, or it may be a coating of other suitable adhesive material. Upon the rubber B are placed one or more wires or strips of whalebone, D, of a length and size proportioned to the length and size of the feathers to be made. Pieces of skin with the fur or down still in its natural position upon them are then arranged upon the rubber sheet B, and all the parts are then pressed together, which causes them to adhere firmly to each other, and the feat-her is completed. The wiresD enable the feathers to be bent into any desired shape, and keep them in that position until bent into some other shape.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Artificial feathers formed of strips of skin with the natural fur or down adhering to them, the sheet of thin sheet-rubber or other adhesive material B, the back 0, and the wire or whalebone D, substantially as herein shown and described.
