JOSEPH L. GROSS, OF AKRON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOUTH-PIECES FOR CIGARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No..l86,834, dated January 30, 1877; application filed July 7., 18,76.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosEPH L. Gnoss, of the city of Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Cigars, of which the following is a specification Myinven tion consists in attaching to the roll of tobacco which forms the filling of a cigar, and which is technically called the bunch, a short wooden or cane tube, so that when the cigar is wrapped this tube projects beyond and forms a convenient mouth-piece therefor.
The tubes to be used, and which may be of either wood or cane, should be about one inch I of the tube, and twisted once together, leaving the ends in a line from the tube, and at a slight angle from. each other, as shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing. When the cigar-bunch is formed the two ends of the Wire are pressed together, and forced into one end thereof, and the whole is wrapped in the usual way, the wrapper extending onto and forming a tight joint about the tube, as shown in section in Fig. 2.
The advantages I claim for this invention are, that without additional cost a cigar can be produced with a neat and convenient mouthpiece already attached, which not only avoids the unpleasant consequences of direct contact of tobacco with the lips, but permits almost complete combustion of the cigar, while the elasticity of the wire spreads the bunch slightly apart, thus insuring a free draft to the cigar at a point where there is the most danger of its becoming choked by tight wrapping.
I claim as my invention The mouth-piece b and wire a, connected with each other, and adapted to be applied to a cigar, substantially as described.
JOSEPH L. GROSS.
In presence of S. O. EDGERTON, G. P. HUMPHREY.
