Description
UNITED STATES PATENT EEIGE.
FRANK BOWMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLANK-BOOKS..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 86,79 l, dated January 30, 1877; application filed December 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK BOWMAN, of New York, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manufacture of Books; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature ofmy invention consists in certain improvements in the manufacture of blankbooks such as invoice, scrap, sample, and all booksA where pasting of miscellaneous matter in the book is the chief object required, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a scrapbook, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the same, and Fig. 3 shows one of the wire staples used in the manufacture of the book.
A represents a s ti/back"fab`'k,-to which the sections B B of paper are fastened by means of wire staples C C. These staples are passed from the front through the sections and through the stifil back A, the sections being placed at suitable distances apart, and the ends of the staples clinched on the rear side of the back A by bending the ends of each staple toward each other.
This wire-stitched book is intended to be made on a sewing-machine, and avoids perforating the back previous to placing the wire, as by my plan the wire is driven through the back and the section, and it cuts, stitches, and clinches the wire at one and the same operation. The stiff back A is then bound in with the cover D, in the usual manner, said cover having an ordinary round back, G, as shown, the same as an ordinary sewed book, while other books fastened with Wire require a flat back, which is ungainly, clumsy, and inconvenient.
I am aware that books have been fastened with wire staples inserted from the back toward the front, and the ends of each staple passing through different sections ofthe book.
Such invention, as known to me, requires,
however, a double board or two sti backs, while by my invention but one board or stili' back is required.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In the manufacture of books, the combination of the single stiff back A, sections B B, the wire staples C C, passed from the front through the sections and back, and clinched on the back thereof, and the cover D, with rounded back G, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of November, 1876.
FRANK BOWMAN. Witnesses:
SAMUEL P. BELL, F. W. BAYNUM.
