GREASE GUN FILLER I Filed Oct. 2, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 ||ai. a 2 vi 2 i g Invenior a i Wzllzam IT. Pen/Ta Patented July 12, 1932 UNITED STATES WILLIAM J. PENKA, OIE CLAFLIN, KANSAS GREASE Gun FILLER Application filedOotober 2, 1951; Serial in). 566,557.
The present invention relates to a grease gun filler or packer and has for its prime object to provide means whereby grease guns may be filled with the grease solid and compact therein thus eliminating all air pockets.
Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a filler of this nature which saves time and eliminates greasy hands and waste of grease.
Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a grease gun filler of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durablathorough- 1y efficient and reliable in use, easy to mani ulate and otherwise welladapted to the purpose for which it is designed. a
With the above and numerous other ob jects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the com bination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view ofthe grease gun filler embodying the features of my invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary section taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a vertical section taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1.
be seen that the numeral 5 denotes a cylindrical container, the top of which is open. An outlet pipe 7 leads from an opening in the bottom of the container 5. Numeral 8 denotes a lid having an annular depending flange 9 telescoped lnslde the open upper end of the container 5.
A central opening is provided in the lid 8 through which projects a threaded shaft 10 on the bottom or inner end of which is a follower or piston 11 to force grease from the container through the outlet, pipe 7. A U- shaped bracket 12 has its cross portion mounted radially on the lid 8 and has upstanding legsl and 15. The leg 15 is provided with an outwardly directed right angle extension 16 terminating in an opening through which 11,. may be forced the shaft 10 extends. A shaft 'l7 is journalled through the legs 14 and 15 and on its outer end is provided-with a hand crank 18. On its inner end there is mounted a bevel gear 19 meshing with a bevel gear 20, the hub 21 of whichis threadedon the shaft 19 and is adapted to bear against the extension 16. a v 1 Obviously by turning the crank the piston downwardly to expel the grease from the container. mounteddiametrically across the lid 8 at rightangl'es to the cross portion of the bracket 12 and has'a central opening through which the shaft extends. a The ends are notched as at 27-toreceive bolts tainer-to engage in the notches and having thumb'nuts 29 threaded thereon. The extension 16 at its end is provided with oppositely disposed ing extensions 31' which in turn merge into A. bar {u 28 swingable on the conextensions 30 merging into dependoutwardly directed ears 32 riveted or othersince in actual practice it attains the features 7 of advantage enumerated as desirable in the Referring to the drawings in detail it Wlll It will be apparent that changes in the de- 7 tails of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificingany of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In combination, a container, a lid for the container, an apparatus on the lid comprising a diametrically extending bar with a central opening, a U shaped brackethaving a cross portion in the same plane with and at right angles to the bar and having upstanding legs, one ofthe legs having a right angular extension formed with an opening 2; I c T 1,867,468
and merging into extensions in the same plane therewith and at rightangles thereto and merging into depending extensions fixed to the bar, the first mentioned extension having an opening registering with the opening in the bar, a threaded shaft extending through the openings, a beveled gear having a hubthreaded on the shaft underfthe first mentioned extension, a shaft journalled through the legs and havinga beveled gear on'the inner end for meshing with the first i mentioned beveled gear, and a follower on V the inner or bottom end of the sh'affi'and q means for engaging the ends ofnthebar with V the container. 7 p 2; In combination, a container, a lidfor the container, an apparatus on the lid comprising a; diametrically extending bar with a central opening, a- U-shaped bracket-hav- 3? ing a cross portion in the same plane with and at right angles to the'bar and having upstanding legs, one ofthe legs having a right angular extension merging into'extensions-in thesame plane-therewithand at right angles thereto and merging. into depending extensions fixed to the bars, the first mentioned extension having an openingregisten ing with the opening in the bar, a'threaded g shaft extending through the openings, a beveledgear having a hub threaded on the shaft under the first mentioned extension,- a shaft journalled' throughthe" legs and-havinga beveled gear on the inner end. for'nreshing with the firstmentioned beveled gear, and a' follower on the; inner or bottomend of the shaft, and means for engaging the ends of the bar with the container,zbolts' on the container extending through notches in the 7 ends of the'bar and nuts on the-bolts.
1 In testimony whereof I aflixmv' signature;
