BOLT SUPPORT FOR TROLLEY FRAMES Filed Nov. 21, 1951 INVENTOR MA/FFED H tfUfRGf/VJ ATTORNEYS Patented July 12, 1932 UNEE STATES ean P TEnr winrnnn n. JUERGENS, or CLEVELAND, OHIO, assrenoa TO THE EUCLID-ARMINGTON con-ronn rron, or EUCLID, Oman ooaronarrou OF OHIO BOLT SUPPORT FOR TROLLEY' ERAMES Application filed November 21, 1931. seine no. 576,491.
This invention relates to hoisting apparatus of the type including a carriage movable along an I-beam trackway or the like, and having a hoisting assembly supported by the carriage.
The hoisting assembly of such apparatus is usually of greater dimension in one horizontal direction than the other so that clear-- ance conditions in one installation require a 10 relation between hoisting and carriage assemblies such that the hoisting assembly eX- tend with the trackway, whereas clearance conditions in another installation may require that the hoisting assembly extend transversely thereto. Production requirements, however, do not conveniently permit the provision of separate special parts for the two arrangements; yet rigid interassociation of the carriage and hoisting assemblies is required in the installation.
In my copending application, Serial No. 495,119, filed November 12, 1930, is shown provision for either such relation of the as semblies, by interposing therebetween a carriage frame which allows the hoisting as sembly to be mounted upon the carriage assembly, oriented in either of the two rectangularly related positions.
In the apparatus there shown, bolts are employed for connecting these principal parts, each bolt for the purpose passing through one side member of the frame and, at one side thereof, a member of one or both of the assemblies; so that the forces transr mitted through the bolts, totalling the entire load to be handled by the hoisting apparatus, tend to tilt or cock the bolts.
The object of this invention is to provide means for resisting these tilting forces, and thus the invention is generally an improvement over that shown in my said copending application.
The exact nature of this invention together with further objects and advantages thereof will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of pertinent parts of hoisting apparatus such as that shown in my copending application; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same as in the plane of line 22, Fig. 1;.and Fig.3 is aside elevation of the bolt support means provided.
With reference now to the drawings, 1 is the I-beam trackway along which the hoisting apparatus is .to run. A carriage is supported thereon by a pair of wheels 2 on either side of the beam, each wheel having a tread portion bearing upon one of the lower flanges thereof. The wheels are carried by opposed side plates 3, so that two side plates and four wheels comprise the carriage assembly of the apparatus.
*The hoisting assembly of the apparatus includes a pair of parallel opposed side plates 4, together with other hoisting parts, the particulars of which are immaterial here but appear in my said copending application.
The hoisting assembly has supporting .connection with the carriage assembly through the interposition therebetween of a frame 11. This frame has four side members 1106 and llbjoinedattheir ends to form a rectangular open frame, the Outside dimensions of which are such that the frame will fit between the side plates 4 of the hoisting assembly. The inner faces of the frame side members have angularity corresponding to that between the side plates 8 of the carriage assembly. Each side of the frame is provided with a pair of spaced openings, and each of the side plates 3 and 4: have corresponding openings; so that each of the two assemblies may have connect-ion with the frame, and thus with each other, by bolts 13 as indicated in the drawing. Fillers 1.4 may be inserted between the carriage assembly side plates 3 and the corresponding sides of the frame 11, as shown, where the I-beam 1 is of smaller dimension than the maximum.
It will be apparent from Fig. 2 that the forces exerted upon the bolts 13 there appearing, are such as to cook the bolts out of alignment, since pull of the side plates 3 is upward whereas the pull of the frame side members 1161 is downward; so that the tendency of these forces is to cook the righthand bolt clockwise and the left-hand bolt counter-clockwise in the figure.
Particularly where a large thickness of fillers 14: is e employed, as shown, this tendency results in great bending forces acting upon the side frame members 11a.
According to my invention, to resist this tendency I provide a pair of bolt-supporting members, each in the form of a yoke such as appears in Fig. 3. This yoke has end portions adapted to bear upon the side members 11?) of the frame, as indicated in Fig. 1, with an intermediate portion 21 adapted to extend across and between these frame side members and thus parallel to the two transverse side frame members 11a.
The intermediate portion 21 is provided with a pair of through openings 22 spaced as are the openlngs 1n the side frame members and adapted to receive the bolts 13 as indicated.
It will be apparent that when such bolt support means are incorporated in the apparatus as shown in Figs. 1 and2, the boltswill be relieved of all forces tending to cook them in the frame,
What I claim is:
Bolt support means for the purpose described, comprising a yoke adapted for as sociation with a carriage frame, with end portions bearing upon opposite side members of the frame, and an intermediate portion extending between said frame members and having openings to receive and support bolts in a transverse frame member which joins said side frame members.
In testimony whereof I herebyaflix my signature.
