Description

J. EINIG.
STEAM-WHISTLE.
Patented Jan. 30, 18771,
UNITED STATES P.A.TEN'I QFFIGE,
JOHN EINIG, OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
IMPROVEMENT lN STEAM-WHISTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,718, dated January 30, 1877; application filed November '25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
nally into three or more compartments of different lengths, each compartment being prov.ded with an aperture forreeeiving the steam, and with the usual mouth.
The object of the invention is to produce simultaneously in a whistle three or more harmonious sounds.
In the drawing, Aisthe outer shell or tube of the whistle, provided with three mouths, a, and with three concave longitudinal partitions, b, which divide the shell into three compartments, c, d, and 6. One of these compartments, 0, extends from the stopf, which is at the lower side of the mouths,to the upper end of the shell. The compartment 01 is stopped at g, as shown in dotted lines, and the compartment c is stopped at h. The three compartments form, in fact, three distinct whistles, combined in a single shell or tube, which are tuned so that they chord, and produce a harmonious and agreeable sound.
This whistle is particularly applicable to steamers and locomotives, Where a sound having a distinctive character is required.
The usual way of producing a combination of sounds by means of steam-whistles is to attach three or more of them to a steam-pipe in such a way that they may be blown simultaneously; but this incurs the expense of three whistles, and also wastes an appreciable quantity of steam. By my improvement, a whistle is provided which will cost but little, if any, more than one of ordinary construction, and
which will require but little steam to oper ate it.
It is obvious that more or less than three compartments may be formed in the shell or tube, and that the improvement is applicable to whistles having an annular opening for steam and a bell sustained by a central stud.
The partitions may vary in form from that shown, and the compartments may be of different sizes. Therefore I do not confine myselfto the particular construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A steam-whistle, the bell or tube of which is divided into longitudinal compartments having difl'erent-lengths substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
