Description

E. E. SWETT.
(No Model.)
WHISTLE.
m Patented May 2'7, 1884. I
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD E. SWETT, OF BIDDEFORD, MAINE.
WHISTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,497, dated May 27, 1884.
Application filed August 21, 1883. (No model.)
known as steam-whistles, but which may be operated either by steam or compressed air; and it has for its objectto provide a whistle which will require less steam or compressed air to produce a certain volume of sound compared with steam-whistles in common use, and which will also be capable, by varying the pressure or supply of steam or compressed air, of producing different sounds, varying from a sharp high tone, like that of a locomotive-whistle, to a deep tonelikethat of a steamboat-whistle or fog-horn.
The invention consists in a whistle having the bell constructed in the shape of an inverted cone larger at the crown than at the base or mouth. This bell, so constructed, is secured in the usual or any suitable manner to the base of the whistle, which may be of any ordinary construction, containing a cock or valve for the supply of steam or air, and an annular opening corresponding to the mouth of the bell for the steam or air to escape and act on the latter.
In the drawing, A designates a whistle-bell, constructed according to my invention in the form of an inverted frustum of a cone, having its inside and outside flaring outwardly from the mouth B to the crown C. It is secured in the usual way to the post D, which stands on the inner circular shaped boX, E, having ope11- ings F for steam or air to pass through into the space inclosed by the outer circular-shaped casing, G, between which and the inner box, E, there is an annular opening, H, to permit the steam to escape and act on the bell A.
I is a stop-cock for supplying steam or air to the box E, having its plug J shown in an open position and represented as provided with flange K, to be attached to a boiler or supply-pipe.
I am aware that it is not new to construct the bell of a whistle with a tapering form, as shown and described in German Patent No. 15,059, of August 11, 1881, and lay no claim thereto.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A steam-whistle the bell of which enlarges from its base to its crown, so that the width of the chamber will gradually increase from base to crown and be wider at the crown than at the base, substantially as described.
