' IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 1S 6,68, dated January 30, 1877; application filed J une 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID R. OSTRANDER, of Fountain Green, Hancock county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences, as will be set forth hereinafter, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a portion of the fence.
This invention relates to movable fences; and consists in making the fence of separate panels and supporting parts, arranged to act as a perpendicular or inclined fence or'a floodfence, as occasion may require, the fence being firmly fixed to the ground, but readily movable.
The panelsAare made separate, with boards lengthwise and crosswise. They have one board, F, longer than the others, extending at the ends beyond the cross-bars, as shown.
The supporting parts are formed separately, and consist of stakes B O, driven into the ground, as shown, with their bottoms apart, and their tops crossed and bolted together, the cross-brace D being driven into the ground nearly horizontally, and bolted to the other two stakes, forming a frame and holding its parts solidly. The part D projects beyond part B. The extended end of the pan el-boards F is hung on this against stake B, so as to be supported. The panel so hung can swing freely at its lower end, so as to act as a floodfence, the panel being on the upstream side. As the flood rises, the panel floats and slides up and down stake B. The lower edge of panel is. held by cross-stakes, either perpendicular or at any suitable inclination. The extended end of second board F may, when the panel is not used as a flood-fence, engage under bars B D or D, to keep it from swinging. The separate rider poles E rest in the cross on top to increase the height.
I claim The combination of the panel, having the extended board or rail F, with the post or support B O D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
DAVID R. OSTRANDER.
