Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SANFORQ P. PORTER, OF WEST-RIGHFIELD, OHIO.
PORTABLE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,755, dated May 9, 1882.
Application filed February 23, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. P. PORTER, of West Richfield, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences; and-I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an inprovement in portable fences; and it consists in the combination of panels which have suitable castings secured to their lower edges, so as to be forced into the earth and hold the panel in an upright positiomwith removable metallic braces which have horizontal projections extending from opposite sides, so as to catch over the ends of the two adjoining panels at the same time, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to produce a light, cheap, portable fence which can be readily set up in position and taken down, and which is adapted for all kinds of uses.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the metallic brace which is used in securing the panels in place.
A represents the panel of a fence, and which may consist either of a frame made of boards and then have wires run from end to end, as is here shown, or which may be covered with boards and pickets in the usual manner. The form here shown is specially adapted to be readily transported from one place to another where a temporary fence is needed. Secured to the bottom of each panel will be any suitable number of sharp-pointed metallic prongs, B, which are forced into the earth, and which serve to hold the panels in place. In order to prevent these panels from being blown or (Model) knocked over, the ends of every two adjoining panels are provided with a metallic brace, D,
which has its ends resting upon the top of the ground, and which is then secured in place by driving a pin or stake down through a hole made in each end for that purpose. This brace passes in between the ends of two panels, and projecting from that part which passes between the panels are the two projections G. These projections extend horizontally outward from both sides, and 'thus catch against opposite sides of each panel. These panels, being held at their bottoms by means of the projections which are forced down into the ground, are held so securely in place that they can neither be blown over by any ordinary wind nor readily knocked over by stock;
When it is desired to remove the fence itis only necessary to remove one panel, and then, by removing one brace at a time, panel alter panel can be quickly removed, and is ready to be either stored away, so as to be protected from the weather, or transported to some other place, where it can be quickly set up.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- I 1. The combination of a panel provided with the sharp projections upon its lower edge with a brace having horizontal projections which catch upon opposite sides of the end of the panel, substantially as set forth.
2. A brace for; fences, provided with horizontal projections upon opposite sides, so as to catch over the ends of the two panels at the same time, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my-signature in presence of two witnesses.
