Description

A. I. HANSON.
BALE-TIE.
P.tented Jan. 30, 1877.
NITED STATES PATENT ASBRY J. HANSON, OF CALVERT, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 186,675, dated January 30, 1877; application filed July 20, 1876.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ASBURY J. HANSON, of Calvert, in the county of Robertson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale -Ties; and I do hereby deolare that the following is a full, elear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, whioh form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved fastening or tie for cotton-bales, &c.; and it consists of two anglar plates, secured at the rear part to one end of the band generally used in baling cotton, 850., and the front part thereof being provided With V-shaped jaws, whieh engage With angular slots in the opposite end of the band, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved fastening in a locked position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, With the jaws thrown open. Figs. 3 and 4 are bottom views, and Fig. 5 is a perspective v1ew.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate like parts.
A A represent two metallio plates in shape not unlike that of a right angle, the rear parts -thereof having slots a for connecting one end of the band B thereto, while the front ends on the sides are provided with V-shaped recesses, the metal being turned over at these points so as to form V-shaped jaws 0, as fully shown in Figs. 3, 4,.and 5. The opposite or loose end of the band B is provided with angular notohes or recesses D on each side of the band, and placed at suitable distances apart.
In the operation of my improved invention the loose end of the band B, after it has been placed around the bale of cotton or other article, is slipped between the jaws 0 of the plates A A, and the band tightened up, by compressing the bale, until itwill go no farther, when the jaws C, slipping into the nearest notches D, hold the bale in a firm and most secure mannen It will be observed that the greater the strain of the compress ed bale upon the bauds, the more seourely will the jaws 0 be retained and held in the angular notches D.
The general features of my invention are.as already described, but it is evident that modifications can be made to accomplish the same result without departing from the spirit of my invention, such as hinging or pivoting one of the plates to the center of the other, so that the strain upon the band will bring the jaws together to retain a firm gripe upon the recessed notches in the opposite or loose end of the band; and these features or its equivalent is contemplated by me.
The advantages of my invention will be readily seen, without a more minute descrip tion, inasmuch as the tie can be produeed at a very small cost, and constructed of the most durable material combined with the great ease of attachment and ready adaptation to the purpose intended.
Havin g thus described my invention, what I daim as new and useful is The hereinbebre-described bale-fie, consisting of the angular plates A A, having slots a at the rear end, for attachment to baud B,
and provided at the front With V-shaped jaws 0, to grasp the notches D in the loose end of the band B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ASBURY J. HANSON. Witnesses:
B. F. CHUROH, R. B. HOW.
