Description

UNITED STATES GEORGE F. EBERHARD, 0F PI'rrsBUne, PENNSYLVANIA, AssIeNoR TO I EBERHARD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAMES A'No TRIMMINGSY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,547, dated January 23, 1877; application filed I December 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. EBER- HARD, of Pittsburg, in the county of Alleghe my and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hames and Trimmings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,-and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of my hames and trimmings, and Fig. 2 is a detail view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view through line as :1). Figs. at and5 are perspective views of my trimmings. j
. This invention relates to the manufacture of hames and the trimmings for hames; and consists in the novel construction of a metallic hame, having at its upper end a series of depressed notches or serrations cast therewith, and not projecting beyond the outer surface of the upper end of the hame, and adapted to receive an adjustable holding-loop also, in the novel construction of a holdinglug, formed with metallic hame, in connection with a breast-ring holder and draft ring or hook, so arranged upon the hame that there shall be no perforations or other weakening of the hame required, and in such position as to prevent unnecessary Wear on the collar, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a hame of cast metal or iron malleableized, preferably hollow, and of sufficient strength without too much weight. The letter B repre sents a holding or draft lug, cast or otherwise formed with the body of thehame, of the same piece of metal. This lug. extends from the flange'b, as well as the body of the hame, outward to a point beyond the main body of the hame, to provide for receiving and holding the breast-ring and draft ring or hook. The inner extremity of this lug is provided with a shoulder, d, having for its inner face a vertical wall, against which the draft-hook and ring-holder abut, thereby relieving the strain on the rivet which connects the said trimming to the hame. The letter D represents a chain or clip hook for the ring shown I in Fig. 4. When either of these trimmings is required forduty, it is attached to the holding-lug B of the hame by means of a rivet passed through the perforated'earsc and lug. By this construction I bring the draft near the hame, and throw the clip up from the collars, thereby keeping it from wearing into the collar, as it does in the old style of hames.
H represents a perforated lug or projection, cast with the hame, for the attachment of the rein-ring, and I, a-loop near the lower end of the hame, for the strap to connect the hames together. Near the upper end of the hame are formed or cast therein a series of transmay require, and said loop may be adjusted up or down at will.
It will be seen that the outer surfaces of the spaces between the depressions fin'the hame are flush with the outer surface of the. upper end of the hame whereby they are not so liable to be caught by the horses mane, nor are they so liable to interfere with surrounding objects as they would. be if made to project beyond the hame, as in those in common use, the salient point in the construction being that the adjusting-notches are depressions in the hame, and do not project beyond its outer surface.
The construction is also simpler and cheaper than that in which a projecting serrated plate is attached to the upper end of the hame.
It will be observed that the hame with its loop I, holding-lug B, lug H, and notches f are cast or formed in one piece, The trimmings. are separate, and connected substantially in the manner as above described,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A metallic hame having a series of serra-' tions or notches,f, near its upper end, in its outerside, casttherewlth, and not projecting beyond the outer surface of the hame, substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination with the lug B of a hame, the hame trimming D or G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a metallic harness hame having a series of notches, f, near its upper end, the holdinglug B, and the trimming D, substantially as and for the purpose, set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE F. EBERHARD.
