This invention relates to a caster for furniture legs and the like and it aims to provide a novel construction which may be used in the usual manner and which in addition may be also used in a position at a right angle to its usual position whereby a flat surface will furnish a support for the furniture or the like, which is substantially immovable and which will afford a broader surface for engagement with the floor or the like to avoid indentation or marring thereof.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the caster arranged for use in the usual manner,
Figure 2 is an end elevation,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure & is a central vertical sectional view showing the parts in position for use as a support,
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 1,
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 4 but with the position of the roller reversed,
Figure 7 is a side elevation of a modified form, and
Figure 8 is a vertical sectional view through the modified form with the parts arranged for the same purpose as those in Figure 4:.
Referring specifically to the drawing and first to the form of Figures 1 to 6, the device comprises a roller as shown at 10 which may be of any suitable material, size and construction. It may be made in a single piece as shown having a peripheral wall 11, side walls 12 and 13, and a hub 14. An axle 15 is journaled in the hub 14 and of a length in excess of the hub as shown and each end thereof is upset to provide a head 16, whose outer surface is preferably spherical and smooth.
The fork, yoke or mounting bracket for the wheel 10 is shown at 17 and is generally of U-shape in order to provide side members 18. The bridge connecting the side members, has a stud 19 rising therefrom, which is adapted for engagement in either a fixed or rotatable manner in a leg offurniture or the like.
The side members 18 at their lower ends are provided with slots 20 and with fingers 21 on opposite sides thereof. The sides 12 and 13 have openings 22 therethrough into which the fingers 21 may be projected and the latter have outwardly extending projections 23. 7
1n the normal use of the device, each shaft 15 at opposite ends, is received in the slots 20, being held against transverse displacement by the heads 16, whereby the wheel is mounted so that the caster may roll in the usual manner. The construction enables the wheel 10 to be arranged on either side as shown 111 Figures 4 and 6 to form a relatively stationary support in which event, the
The projections 23 serve to connect the rollers against displacement in the event the furniture is lifted. It will be realized that the side members 18 have suflicient flexibility to enable them to yield to accommodate 1novement of projections 23. The slidable mounting of the axle 15 enables it to slide vertically so as not to form any projection which will mar the floor or supporting surface.
It will also be noted from Figure 1, that the side members 18 have horizontal walls 2d adapted for direct support on the walls 12 and 13 when used as in Figures 1 and 6.
A modified form is shown in Figures 7 and 8 wherein fingers 25 are employed in lieu of the fingers 21 of the previous form. The fingers 25 are of U-shape in order to better fill the openings 22. The shorter portions thereof 26 are slightly flexible. Otherwise the construction is identical with that of the previous form.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. In a caster, an attaching bracket, a roller normally journaled thereon, and means whereby said roller and bracket may be interconnected with a flat side of the roller lowermost.
2. In a caster, an attaching bracket having fingers and slots therebetween, a roller having an axle disposable in said slots, said roller also having openings in a side face for engagement by said fingers. I
3. In a caster, an attaching bracket having fingers and slots therebetween, a roller having an axle disposable in said slots, said roller also having openings in a side face for engagement by said fingers, said fingers having projections aiding in securing the same in the openings.
4. In a caster, an attaching bracket having fingers and slots therebetween, a roller hav ing an axle disposable in said slots, said roller also having openings in a side face for engagement by said fingers, said axle being axially slidable.
5. In a caster, an attaching bracket having fingers and slots therebetween, a roller having an axle disposable in said slots, said roller also having openings in a side face for engagement by said fingers, said fingers being substantially U-shape.
In testimony whereof I affi'x my signature.
EDWARD PYNYNSKI.
