SAFETY RING GUARD Filed June 13, 1931 Patented June 21, 1932 UNITED STATES ARTHUR LEV, F BRONX, NEW YORK SAFETY RING- GUARD Application led .Tune 13,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in safety ring guard.
rlhe primary object of the invention is to provide a guard attachment for nger rings in the form of a strip of material fashioned at its ends for engagement with portions of a ring band with the strip positioned inwardly of the band for reducing the diameter of the latter to prevent the -escape or loss of the ring from a finger.
IVith the above and other objects in view that will become'apparent Vas the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed. f
In the drawing Figure 1 is a developed perspective view of a safety ring guard constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational vview ofa ring with theV guard in position thereon;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a developed perspective view of another form of ring guard;
Figure 5 is a side elevational view of a ring with the ring guard shown in Figure 4, in position thereon;
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional View taken on on line 6-6 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 7-7 of Figure 5 Figure 8 is a developed perspective View of another form of ring guard;
Figure 9 is a side elevational view of a ring with the guard shown in Figure 8 in position thereon;
Figure 10 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 10-10 of Figure 9; and
Figure 11 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 11-11 of Figure 9.
In the form of invention illustrated in Figures 1 to .3, the. ring guard comprises an elongated metallic strip 15 having a cutaway portion or notch 16 in opposite side edges thereof as shown in Figure 1 adjacent opposite ends and each opposite edge of the 1931. serial No. 544,22.
strip 15 in line with the notch V16 carries an outwardly or laterally directed tongue 17.
In mounting the guard upon the ringband R shown in Figure 2, the strip 15 of the guard is bent into arcuate form for engagement with the inner side of the ring band, the tongue. 17 being bent in opposite directions around the ring band with the terminal ends of the tongue entering the associated notches 16 at the inner side of the ring band. By eX- tending the outer terminal end of the finger 17 into the associated notch 16, the finger is retained in its proper position against lateral displacement or distortion by the side walls of the notch so that when the guard is mounted on a finger ring and the ring isworn on a nger, escape of the guard is prevented, as the inner face of the guard including ops posite ends thereof and the terminal ends `of the fingers 17 lie in contact with the finger of the wearer. The terminal end of the nger v17 lies within the planevof the strip 15. as
shown in Figure 3 so that no projectionsare present which would injure the finger of the varer, or catch into wearing apparel or the In the form of v invention shown in, Figures 4 to 7, the guard strip 15a has an outwardly or laterally directed linger 18 projecting from each side edge thereof adjacent oppo- .site ends and the adjacent edge portions of the strip opposite the tongues 18 carry a pair of outwardly orv laterally directed lugs 19 withV a lu aligned with each side edge of the associate tongue 18.
The guard shown in Figure 4 is illustrated in Figures 5 to 7 as operatively engaged with the ring band R, the strip 15a being bent into arcuate form as illustrated, while .the tongues 18 are bentaround the ring band in opposite directions, the lugs 19 having been irstbentinto engagementwith aside face of the strip 15a while the terminalends Of thetongues 18 arepositionedv between the llugs `19 thereby raising the ends of or guard fromfthe ring band;
Anotherlform of ring guard is shownin the. strip 59 Figures 8 to 11, the strip 15b havinga cutout .portion or notch 16a formed in opposite side '-edges'thereof adjacent` opposite endsand an vzo outwardly or laterally directed tongue 17 a carried by each edge of the strip 15b at the sides thereof opposite the notches 16a and adjacent the inner edges of the notches. The guard strip 15b is associated with the ring band R, illustrated in Figures 9 to 11 by first bending the sections 15o of the strip that lie outwardly ofthe tongues 17 a in an inward direction to overlie one side of the striprlb With the notch 16al aligned with thetongue 17 a. The tongues 17 a are then bent around the ring band R with the terminal ends of the tongues 17a extended into the notches 16a.
It will be observed that 'the strips 1515a and 15b are in no way weakened,n as the tongues 17, 17a and 18 as well as the lugs 19 are additional elements and are not struckout from the different strips. In all forms of the invention, the. guard strips are presented for engagement with the fingerof the wearer and all prongs, tongues and lugs are interposed between the strips and ring band. The tongues beingv bent into positions between the associated locking lugs and recess walls, and disposed between the strips and ring band, displacement thereof is eliminated.
Whilev there are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Y I claim Y K 1. A finger ring guard comprising a metallic strip, a'laterally directed tongue at leach end of the strip for securing the latter said means and prevented from contacting the nger of the wearer and said Ymeans being locatedat the inner side of the finger ring.
2. A finger ring guard comprising a metallic strip, a laterally directed tongue at each end of the strip for securing the latter to a linger ring, and means engageable'with opposite sides of the free end of each tongue to v prevent movement of the tongue in a direction lengthwise of the strip comprising means on the strip to be engaged by the tongue, the side edges of the tongue ends lyin within the -plane of said means and prevente from contacting the linger of the wearer and said means being finger ring. Q Y
3. A linger ring guard comprising a metallocated lat the inner side of the lic strip, a laterally directed tongue at each end of theY strip for 'securing the latter to a finger ring,l and means engageable with opposite sides ofthe free end ofA each tongue to preventrmovement of the tongue in a Ydirec- Y v tion lengthwise ofthe strip comprising means Y on the strip to be engaged by the outer terminal end of the tongue, the side edges of the itongue ends lying within the plane of said 'edge thereof opposite the tongue for reception of .the terminal end of the tongue with the walls of the notch at opposite sides of the tongue end kto prevent movement of the tongue end in a direction lengthwise to the strip, the side edges of the tongue ends lying within the plane of the strip and prevented from contacting the finger oi' the wearer.
5. A finger ring guard comprising a metal= lic strip, a laterally directed tongue at each end of the strip for securing the latter to a finger ring, a pairy of lugs projecting from each edge of the stripopposite the tongue with one of the lugs at each side edge of the associated tongue, the lugs being engaged with aside face of the strip and the tongue end disposed between the lugs.
6. A finger ring guard comprising a metallic strlp, a laterally directed tongue at each end of the strip for securing the latter to a finger ring, said strip having a notch in each edge thereof opposite the tongue and disposed outwardly of the tongue, the notched ends of the strip occupying an Aoverlying position relative to the strips when in service and the end of the tongue being extended into the associated end notch. l
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
