This invention relates to a door lock and has for its object to provide a latch and operating handle which may be withdrawn or locked in engagement by manipulation of the handle.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a construction which will be selfcontained in the handle of the door and lock the latch thereof by suitable manipulation of the handle.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a lock which will be completely contained within the handle whereby a new handle may be substituted for an old handle to provide a lock for the door latch and whereby separate locking mechanism apart from the handle may be eliminated with the consequent saving of operating parts and expense connected with the manufacture thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock for a door which may be moved to locking position by merely turning the handle of the door and which may be contained either in the handle or in the latch mechanism or in both.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a handle for operating the latch of the door which handle may be locked and in position to prevent its movement for operating the latch of the door by a rotation in an opposite direction to that in which it would be moved to withdraw the latch and from which locked position a key will be necessary for insertion .into the lock to again permit manipulation ofthe handle.
With these and other objects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists. of a novel arrangement of parts more escription panying drawings, and more particularly set forth in the appended claims. n

Door latch mechanism such as used for the door of an automobile is designed to be locked frequently to prevent unauthorized admission by means of the door to the automobile. In order that a separate lock mayl be dispensed with to eliminate the necessity of providing suitable openings in the door and the like, I have provided a locking mechanism which may becontained within the handle of the'door and which may be substituted in the standard form of door by removing the present handle and replacing by, my 1mwhich will mechanically lock upon movement proved handle and lock therein and in addition thereto in some cases I may provide a lock operated by the handle but acting directly upon parts of the latch mechanism to prevent movement thereof. And in each of these cases, I provide a simple construction which may be locked when the handle is in one certain pre-determined position to which it may be moved by the one desirin to lock the car, and although not necessary prefer to provide a spring plunger type of lock of the handle into the pre-determined position whereby no key is necessary for locking the door but is merely necessary for unlocking the same; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be ao complished.
lVith reference to the drawings, 16 designates the portion of a door which may be that of an automobile door with a latch-bolt 17 extending therefrom and moved into the eX- tended position by spring 18 fastened upon a suitable portion of the door or latch-bolt mechanism as at 19. The latch-bolt is provided with a lug 20 having an abutment surface 21 to be engaged by the projection 22 mounted upon the member 23 and having a square opening 24 to receive the correspondingly shaped end 25 of the shaft 26. At the opposite end of the shaft 26 an abutment 27 is provided to be engaged by theprojection 28 upon the hub 29 of the handle 30 whereby movement of the handle in the direction of the arrow 31 (see Fig. 1) will cause the latchbolt to beretracted from the case part of the door jamb to permit the door to be opened. The handle 30, however, is free to be moved in the opposite direction, by which movement the projection 28 will move from the abutment 27 without movement of the shaft 26. In some cases it is desirable to disengage the abutment 27 and projection 28 by an axial movement of the handle and shaft in which case the modification shown in Fig. 16 is used. In this construction the bore of the hub of the handle is recessed to provide a more elongated recess 43 and an enlarged portion 81 of the bore to receive a spring 82 acting between the shoulder 83 and flange 84 of the lock but which spring will permit the handle to be moved outwardly along the axis of the shaft 26 to disengage the abutment 27 and projection 28 shown in Fig. 2 and thus permit the handle to be rotated to the locked position by rotation in the same direction as for operating the latch-bolt.
The hub 29 of the handle is hollow and within this hollov7 portion there is mounted a lock having a casing 31 which is secured in position through the bore 32 in the shaft 26 by means of a pin 33 extending therethrough and held against rotation bya square end and the set screw 34. From the casing 31 of this lock there projects a plunger or pawl 35 which is forced outwardl by means of a spring 36 and which may ble drawn into the casing by the eccentrically mounted pin 37 on the end of the cylindrical portion 38 which is locked in position in the casing 31, by
-means of plungers 39 engaged in recesses 1n the casing and which is retracted by insertion of the key into the slot 41 to permit the key to turn the cylinder 38 and withdraw the plunger 35. The hollow hub 29 of the handle is generally cylindrical as illustrated at 42 in Figures 8 and 9 and is provided with a recess 43 extending outwardly from this cylindrical bore so that movement of the handle from the latch-bolt operating position illustrated in full lines in Figures l1, 2 and 7 to the dotted position illustrated in Figure 1 and shown in Figure 8 either by reverse rotation or by axial movement and continued rotation will permit the plunger 35 to be forced by means of the spring 36 into the recess 43 which is provided with abutment shoulders 44 to prevent movement of the handle to the latch-bolt operating position. Thus it Will be necessary for further operation of the latch-bolt to insert a key into the lock 31 and turn the same to withdraw the plunger 35 from the recess 43 thus permitting the handle to be moved to its full line position illustrated in Fig. 1 for operation of the latch-bolt. l

Also, it will be understood that the latch-bolt may be retracted by means of the lever 47 at the opposite end thereof similar to that of the handle provided on the door of the automobile' for convenient operation from the inside thereof.
In some instances it is desirable to provide a lock more directly associated with the latchbolt which I have illustrated in Figures 9-15. In this modified construction the latch-bolt 50 is retracted by member 51 having an accurate slot 52 to receive the pin 53 mounted upon the latch bolt 50 and which is turned by shaft 54 secured to the plate 51 and hub of the handle 55 rigidly secured to the-shaft.
The latch-bolt is withdrawn when plate 51 is in the position illustrated in Fig. 10 and the handle illustrated in dotted lines at 56. Thus by movement of the handle 56 as illustrated in Fig. 10 as indicated by the arrow 57 the rlatch-bolt will be withdrawn from its catch in the door jamb to permit opening of the door, and in order that the door may be locked it is merely necessary for me to move the handle 56 upwardly in the direction opposite to that illustrated by the arrow 57, to the position illustrated in Fig. 9 which will cause a corresponding movement of the plate 51 to the position illustrated in Fig. 9 in which position the pawl 58 will drop into engagement with abutment or shoulder 59 and prevent movement of the plate 51 and handle secured thereto and consequently will prevent movement of the latch-bolt 50.
Likewise upon movement .of the handle 56 to raised position illustrated in Figure 9 a recess 60 in the hub 55 of the handle 56 will be brought into the position shown in Figure 12 to permit the spring 63 to force the plunger 61 of the lock 62 to enter this recess and prevent the handle from movement it being understood that the lock 62 is relatively stationary and not moved upon movement of the handle to the raised position before mentioned. In order that the parts may be unlocked, a key is inserted in the slot 64 of the lock 62 which withdraws the plunger 61 from the recess 60 in the hub of the handle and permits rotation of the lock 62 and its shaft 65 extending therefrom to raise the pawl 58 by means of the links 66 and 67, the bell crank lever 68 and link 69 having a slot 7() therein to receive the pin 71 extending from the pawl 58 and at a point spaced from the pivot 71 of this pawl, whereby it will be noticed that the key releases the handle and then upon being turned lifts the pawl freeing the plate 51 so that the handle may be swung down to position illustrated in Fig. 10 and the pin 53 will come in to engagement with the end of the slot 52 to operate the latch-bolt 50.
A modified showing of this pawl and plate arrangement is illustrated in Fig. 15 in which case the pawl 72 is pivoted at 73 to drop into engagement with the abutment 7 4 of the plate 75 and which may be lifted from such position by links 76, 77 mounted directly upon the end of the shaft 65 whereby the plateis released from locked position. It will of course be understood that the latch-bolt 50 may be withdrawn by means of auxiliary lever 78 when desired from the inside.
I have illustrated as a preferred construction a lock having a spring pressed plunger so that upon movement of the handle to the predetermined position the plunger will snap into the recess in the handle. It is of course understood that a lock movable to locked position by a key instead of a spring may be used in a similar capacity by manipulating the plunger by means of the key of the construction shown in Figs. 12 to 14 inclusive.
rllhe foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the
invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
l claim:
1i The combination of a latch-bolt, means including a manually movable member for retracting the latch-bolt by movement of the ymember in one direction and means within the movable member for locking the member by a rotative movement of the member.
2. The combination of a latch-bolt, means for retracting said latch-bolt including a handle with a hub thereon movable in one direction to Withdraw said latch, and means within said hub for locking said handle against movement when moved in the opposite direction.
.3. The combination of` a latch-bolt, means for retracting the latch-bolt, a handle for operating said means to retract said latchbolt by movement in one direction, and movable relative to said means in the opposite direction, an abutment on a portion movable with said handle, and pawl means to engage said abutment and hold said handle in locked position, and means within said handle operated by a key to move said pawl from engagement with said abutment.
4. The combination of a latch-bolt, means for retracting said latch-bolt including a hanldle movable in one direction to withdraw said latch-bolt, means for locking said handle upon movement in the opposite direction, and means housed within the handle responsive to the manipulation of a key for unlocking the same.
5. rFhe combination of a latch-bolt, means for retracting said latch-bolt including a handle movable in one direction to Withdraw said latch-bolt, a lock having a plunger, and an abutment provided on said handle and engageable by said plunger upon movement of said handle to a pre-determined position to lock the same in place.
6. `ln combination a latch-bolt, means for operating said latch-bolt including 'a rotatable shaft member, a handle member on said shaft, cooperating means on said members for engagement to retract said latch-bolt by movement of said handle member in one `di rection said handle member being movable to avoid such engagement and permit movement relative to said shaft member, a lock carried by one of said members and a recess forming an abutment provided on the other member to beengaged by said lock upon relative movement of the members.
7. ln combination, a latch-bolt having a lug thereon, a hollow shaft movable about its own axis, a member mounted on said shaft t-o move therewith and provided with a. portion to engage said lug, an abutment on said shaft, a handle rotatably mounted on said shaft and provided with a projection to cnaffe said abutment a lock having a s rin"- g e a zpressed plunger engaging the inner surface of said handle to slide along its surface and cooperating means between said lock and handle to lock the-handle upon movement to a predetermined position.
8. In combination, a latch-bolt, a hollow shaft movable about its own axis, a member mounted on said shaft for moving said latchbolt, a handle having a bore in a portion extending beyond said shaft and rotatably mounted on said shaft, cooperating means between said handle and shaft for movement of the shaft by movement of the handle in one direction, a lock mounted within said bore and having a spring-pressed plunger engaging said bore to slide along its surface and a notch in said bore to receive said plunger when the handle is moved to cause said notch to register therewith, said lock beingvmovable to retract said plunger by a key or the like to permit movement of the handle.
9. In combination, a latch-bolt, a hollow shaft movable about its own axis, a member mounted on said shaft for moving said latchbolt, a handle rotatably mounted on said shaft, cooperating means between said handle and shaft for movement of the shaft by movement of the handle in one direction, a lock mounted within said handle and cooperating means between said lock and handle to lock Y the handle upon movement to a pre-determined position.
10. In combination, a latch-bolt having a lug thereon, a hollow shaft movable aboutY its own axis, a member mounted on said shaft to move therewith and provided with a portion to engage said lug an abutment on said shaft, a handle rotatably mounted on said shaft and provided with a projection to engage said abutment and having a bore in a portion of the handle extending beyond said shaft, a lock mounted within said bore and having a spring-pressed plunger engaging the inner surface of the bore to slide along its surface and a notch in said bore to receive said plunger when the handle is moved to cause said notch to register therewith, said lock being movable to retract said plunger by a key or the like to permit movement of the handle.
11. In combination, a latch-bolt having a lug thereon, a hollow shaft movable about its own axis, a member mounted on said shaft to move therewith and provided with a portion to engage said lug, a handle fixed on said 'l shaft to move therewith and having a hub with a bore extending beyond said shaft, a lock mounted within said handle about which said handle rotates, a spring-pressed plunger of said lock engaging the surface of the bore of said handle, a notch in said bore to receive said plun ers upon movement of said handle to a pre etermined position.
12.. In combination, a latch-bolt, having a lug thereon, a hollow shaft movableabout its own axis, a member mounted on said shaft to move therewith and provided with a porplungers upon movement of said handle to a predetermined position, a notch in said member and a pawl engageable with said notch upon movement of said handle to locked position, and linkages connecting said lock and pawl whereby movement of said lock to release said pawl from said member also releases said handle from locked position.
13. In combination, a latch-bolt, having a lug thereon, a hollow shaft movable about its own axis, a member mounted on said shaft to move therewith and provided with a portion to engage said lug, a handle fixed on said shaft to move therewith and having a hub with a bore extending beyond said shaft, a lock mounted within said shaft about which said shaft rotates, a spring-pressed plunger of said lock engaging the inner bore of said handle, a notch in said bore to receive said plungers upon movement of said handle to a predetermined position, a notch in said member and a pawl engageable with said notch upon movement of said handle to locked position, a lever on said lock movable therewith, a bell crank lever, links connecting said lever and pawl to said bell crank lever whereby movement of said lock releases said pawl and said handle from locked position.
14. The combination of a latch-bolt, means including a manually movable member for retracting the latch-bolt by movement of the member in one direction, and means within the movable member for locking the member by a rotative movement of the member in the opposite direction.
15. In combination a latch bolt, means for operating said latch bolt including a rotatable shaft member, a projection on said shaft member, a handle member rotatably mounted on said shaft and axially movable with relation thereto, and means for mechanically locking said handle by manually moving said handle axially and rotating the same.
16. A handle member adapted for cooperation with a latch bolt and bolt operating means comprising a rotatable shaft member, a projection on'said shaft member, ahandle rotatably mounted on said shaft and axially movable with relation thereto, a spring for axially moving said handle in one direction, and a projectlon on said handle to engage that on said shaft and disengageable therefrom by relative axial movement of said handle.
17. A handle member adapted for cooperation with a latch bolt and bolt operating means comprising a rotatable shaft member, a projection on said shaft member, a handle Lacasse rotatably mounted on said shaft 'and axially movable with relation thereto, a projection on said handle to engage that on said shaft and disengageable therefrom by relative axial movement of said members, and means for locking relative movement of said members when said projections are in other than engaged position 18. A handle member adapted for cooperation With a latch bolt and bolt operating means comprising a rotatable shaft member, a handle member on said shaft, cooperating means on said members for engagement by movement of said handle member in one direction, said handle member being movable in the other direction relative to said shaft member, a lock carried by said shaft member and a recess in said handle member to receive a plunger of the lock upon movement of the handle member to predetermined -position `to hold the handle aga-inst movement relative to said shaft member.
