Description

June 21, 1932. A. EIDAM 1,864,191
CHUCK Filed May 5, 1928 Patented June 21, 1932 UNITED STATES ADAM EIDAM, F HAZLETON, PENNSYLVANIA CHUCK Application filed May 5, 1928. Serial No. 275,278.
My invention relates to a chuck or holding device which is adapted to hold objects while the latter are being subjected to some action or treatment such as a polishing or rubbing treatment.
The device may be employed for holding articles of various kinds but it is designed for holding an object of ring or annular shape and especially it is designed for holding spinning rings while the latter are being rubbed and polished to smooth the same.
Spinning rings are employed in the silk throwing art, and perhaps in other arts, for supporting travelers which move thereon. The rings in use become roughened and the presence of the roughened portions results in the cutting or breaking of the threads which are supported in the travelers, which travel upon the spinning rings. It is necessary, therefore, from time to time to polish the spinning rings in order to remove therefrom the roughnesses which makev their appearance thereon. Heretofore these rings have been supported in one hand, or manually, and the rubbing and polishing operation effected by means of apolishing device held in the other hand. In other words, the polishing of these rings has been a wholly manual operation. The polishing of a ring manually requires an excessively long period of time and is therefore relatively very expensive. Attempts heretofore have been made to provide mechanical means to be employed in the process of polishing spinning rings but such attempts have proved unsuccessful.
It is a general object of the present invention to provide mechanical means for supporting and actuating a spinning ring during the process of polishing the same to remove therefrom roughnesses produced in the use thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rotatable device having means upon the holding or working face thereof for engaging and holding the flanged edge of a spinning ring, the said holding means being adapted to be released at will.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a rotatable member having holding means upon the front or Working face thereof which is adapted to hold an annular memher, for example a spinning ring, and also having means whereby the efficiency of the holding means is increased with increased speed of rotation.
It is also a further object of the invention to provide a holding device having stationary and movable holding means upon its front or working face which are adapted to engage the outer'peripheral surface of an object to be held thereby, the said movable means being held in yielding holding position and having connected therewith a member actuated by centrifugal force whereby the holding action of the said movable holding means is increased with acceleration of rotation of the said rotatable device. 7
Other objects and advantages of the invention will occur to those skilled in the art and furthermore other additional objects and advantages will be pointed out in the detailed description of the invention which follows or will be apparent therefrom.
In order that the invention may be easily understood and its practical advantages fully appreciated reference should be had to the accompanying drawing in which I have illustrated. one form of a convenient mechanical embodiment thereof. It is to be understood that the invention is susceptible of embodiment in other forms of construction than that shown and that in the drawing I have merely illustrated that form of embodiment of the invention which at present is preferred by me.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a view partly in sectional and partly in edge'elevation of a device embodying the invention and showing also in eleva- 90 tion the means for supporting and effecting rotation thereof;
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of the device embodying the invention;
Fig. 3 is a view in rear elevation thereof, 9 5 the said view being taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 isa similar View showing a movable part of the structure in a different position from that in which it is shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a view in transverse section of a fragmentary portion of the structure showing a detail of the construction, the said view being taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 6 is a similar view showing a slight modification of the structure.
In the drawing I have shown a fragmentary portion of an electric motor 1, one end of the shaft of which projects as indicated at 2. The device embodying my invention is mounted upon the projecting end portion of the said shaft and rotates therewith. The device of my invention comprises a disk 3 preferably of circular shape which has upon its rear side a boss or projection 4 through which and also through the centerof the disk 3 an opening 5 extends for the reception of the projecting end portion 2 of the motor shaft. The projection or boss 4 is provided with a screw-threaded opening 6 for the reception of a binding screw 7 by means of which the device constituting the invention is secured in relatively stationary position upon the said shaft. Preferably the front side of the disk 3 is hollowed out or formed which the circular member which is to be treated is mounted and held by means hereinafter to be described. In the construction as illustrated the object to be held and to be treated or processed consists of a spinning ring 15, which in cross section may be described as of double T-shape; or, to illustrate. it is of a shape in cross section somewhat similar to the cross section of the rails of a railway track. The ring is provided with outwardly extending flanges 16 and 17 at its opposite sides either of whichis adapted to be engaged by the holding means previously referred to and which will be hereinafter described. It will be noted that the web of the ring in the specific construction illustrated is provided in the equatorial plane thereof with a thickened portion, as indicated at 18. The ring as illustrated is of known construction and it will be understood that the device embodying my invention is capable of holding and is adapted to hold rings of other constructions, provided only that they have means adapted to be en aged by the holding means of the device.
The holding means of the device of the construction as illustrated, which is at present preferred by me, comprises stationary hook- like projections 20 and 21 integral with the disk 3 and located in adjoining relation to the periphery thereof. The said holding means are located upon and project from the front face of the disk 3. The third of the holding means comprises a cylindrical section 22 which may be described as being located at the apex of an isosceles triangle with the projections 20 and 21 occupying positions at the opposite ends of the base thereof.
The cylindrical section 22 is rotatably mounted in an opening 23 in the disk 3 near or in adjoining relation to a point in the periphery thereof. The front end of the said cylindrical section 22 is provided with a flanged head 25 a portion of which is cut away, as indicated at 26, to form a flat side which is adapted to be adjusted into a position at right angles to a radial line from the axis of the disk 3. The adjustment of the cylindrical section 22 into such position is for the purpose of permitting the placing of the ring 15 in position upon the device, as will be hereinafter described. The rear end of the section 22 which projects beyond the rear side of the disk 3 is squared, as indicated at 27, and projects through a squared opening 28 provided near one end and joining the outer edge of an irregularly curved or shaped narrow plate 30. The opening in the plate 30 fits closely the squared end portion 27. A washer 31 mounted uponthe squared end portion 27 is located between the said plate and the adjoining rear side of the disk 3. The outer end of the projection 27 is provided with a cross pin 32 underneath which is located a washer 33. A coiled spring 40 connected at one end to an extension 41 of the plate 30 and at its opposite end to a stationary pin 42 projecting from the rear side of the disk 3 holds or tends to hold the section 22 in such position that the corner portion 43 of the flanged head 25 engages the adjoining peripheral edge portion of the ring15 or some part or portion of other work as the case may be. The plate 30 provides means whereby the cylindrical section 22 may be adjusted in its bearing to adjust the flanged head 25 into any position desired. For the purpose of facilitating the adjust.- ment of the plate 30 I have provided in adjoining relation to the end thereof opposite that to which the spring 40 is connected a finger piece 45. When it is' desired to insert a ring in place the plate 30 is turned so as to move the longer end portion thereof toward the projection or boss 4, as indicated in full lines in Fig. i of the drawing. When thus turned the cylindrical section 22 is turned sov as to position the flat edge 26 of p the head 25 in a plane or line at right angles to a radial line from the axis of the disk 3. When in such position a flange of the ring 15 may be inserted underneath the projecting edges of the projections 20 and. 21, as indicated in Fig. 2, after which the ring is laid with its side in adjoining relation to the disk 3 against the front surface thereof, whereupon, upon releasing the plate 30, the spring 40 operates to turn the said plate and the section 22 so as to cause the corner portion 43 to engage the adjoining flange of the ring 15, as is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
To facilitate the insertion of the ring into position I have provided at a point in opposed relation to the cylindrical section 22 and the flanged head 25 thereof an angular groove 50 of arc shape, into which the outer edge portion of the adjoining side of the ring 15 may be inserted, the said ring occupying at such time an angular position with relation to the front face of the disk. The holding of the said ring in such angular relationship facilitates the insertion of the flanged edge thereof into the notches provided upon the inner sides of the projections 20 and 21.
As has been indicated already, the spring 40 after a ring is in position operates automatically to adjust the cylindrical section 22 to cause the corner portion 43 of the head 25 thereof to engage the adjoining portion of the flange of the ring 15.
When the plate 30 is adjusted or swung inwardly, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 4, in opposition to the action of the spring 40 its movement is limited by the contact of the inner edge thereof with the projection 4.
It will be apparent that upon rotation of the disk 3 the force of centrifugal action on the longer end portion of the plate 30 causes or tends to cause the said plate to turn about the axis of its pivot, the said longer end portion moving or tending to move outwardly. If a ring, such as 15, or other work is present the extent of pivotal movement of said plate is limited by the engagement of the forward or front end portion of the pivot or cylindrical section 22 with said ring or other work; but if no ring or other work is present the extent of such pivotal movement is limited by the engagement or contact of the outer edge of the longer end portion of the plate with the inner side of the rearwardly extending peripheral flange 51 or other stop which may be substituted for or provided in lieu of such flange. It will be apparent that by limiting the outward swinging movementof the longer end portion of the plate as described the safety of the device is increased. If the longer end of said plate were allowed to swing outwardly so as to extend beyond the periphery of the disk it will be apparent that the projecting portion thereof might strike a person using the device and cause serious injury. It also will be apparent that the holding action or force of the engaging head 25 upon or against the ring 15 increases with the increase of the speed of rotation of the disk. In other words, the holding force increases with the increase of the centrifugal force applied to the plate 30.
Instead of the stationary holding devices 20 and 21 being formed integrally, as is pre ferred, with the disk 3 the said holding devices may be formed of separate plugs or pins 52 mounted in openings 53 and terminating at their front ends in hooked projections 54 corresponding to the hook-like portions of the projections 20 and 21. The other ends of the plugs or pins 52 are upset, as indicated, for the purpose of securing the said plugs or pins permanently in the openings 53 provided therefor.
. In the use of the device a ring to be polished is mounted upon the'front face of the device and held thereon by the holding means, as desired, "first with one side and then with the other of said ring against the face of the holder, and as the latter is rotated to cause rotation of the ring a polishing tool'may be applied to the front side or surface of the ring and the polishing thereon quickly effected. lVhen one side has been polished the ring may be reversed in its position in the holder and the opposite side thereof then polished.
It will be seen that by means of a device embodying my invention the polishing of a ring may be effected in a very short period of time, thereby effecting great economy, because heretofore polishing of rings of the character of that illustrated has required a relatively long period of time-usually many minutes. By the employment of my invention a ring may be polished in a minute or two.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l
1. A work holding device of the character described comprising a main body portion having holding means located thereon positioned at points corresponding to the corners of an isosceles triangle, two of the said holding means being fixed in relation to the said portion and the other of said holding means being adjustable, and the said main body portion having an arc-shaped groove angular in cross section in its front face located at a point midway between the fixed holding means and in opposed relation to the adjustable holding means, and means for automatically adjusting the said adjustable holding means into holding position after the work has been placed in position upon the front face of the said main body portion.
2. In a chuck, the combination of a head, means for rotating the same, a plurality of fixed work-holding members and a movable work-holding member secured to the head for clamping work on the head, and means carried by said movable member adapted to 1 be actuated by centrifugal force induced by rotation of the head for holding the said movable member in contact with the work.
3. In a chuck, the combination of a head, means for rotating the same, a plurality of fixed work-holding members and a movable work-holding member secured to the head for clamping work on the head, resilient means between the movable work-holding member and the head for retaining the mov- Y able work-holding member in clamping position, and means carried by said movable member adapted to be actuated by centrifugal force induced by rotation of the head for holding the said movable member in contact with the Work.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have hereunto signed my name this 1st day of May, A. D. 1928.
