Description

J. B. GORMLEY PUNCH Filed Jan. 8,
Patented June 2 1, 1932 UNITED STATES JOHN B. GORMLEY, 015 BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS Application filed January 8, 1930.
My invention relates to punches, particularly but not exclusively to those for punching tickets and the like.
The invention, which has among its objects the provision of a durable punch of simplified construction adapted to be operated by the same hand of the operator as presents the ticket to the punch, will be best understood from the following description when read in the light of the accompanying drawing of an illustrative embodiment of the invention, the scope of which latter will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the punch showing it connected to the edge of a table, desk, or the like; and
Fi 2 is an elevation of the punch shown by Fig. 1 viewed from the right of the latter.
Referring to the drawing, the punch illustrated comprises a supporting member 1, the latter herein in the form of a C-clamp having the screw 3 for attaching the clamp to the edge portion 5 of a table, desk, or the like.
As shown, the punch comprises a casing 7 provided with a transverse slot 9 and a longitudinal bore 11, the latter opening on both ends of the casing and intersecting said slot. In the bore 11 is reciprocally mounted a plunger or punching tool 13 having ahead 15. As shown, the upper end 17 of the bore 11 is of enlarged diameter and receives a spring 19 which surrounds the upper end of the punch ing tool, said spring at its lower end abutting with the shoulder 21 at the lower end of the enlarged bore, and at its upper end abutting with the head 15, so as tourge the punching tool into its position shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing.
As shown, the casing 7 is connected to the support or C-clamp 1 by links 23 and 25, said links being pivotally secured to the C- clamp by pins 27, and to the casing by pins 29. Herein, the link 23 has an extension 31 with an offset end portion 33, which latter bears against the upper face of therhead 15 of the punching tool, so that when the casing 7 is depressed by means of the finger-piece 35 carried by the casing, the extension 31 of the link 23 will press the punching tool inward Serial No. 419,355.
to cause it to perforate the ticket inserted in the slot 9. Upon removal ofpressure of the operators hand on the -finger-piece-35 the spring 19 will again move the parts into their positions shown by the drawing.
Preferably, the links 23 and 25 are so proportioned and positioned, that when the cas ing 7 is' depressed, there is no tendency to move the slot 9 away from the hand of the ly projecting lug 35 on its under side adapted to limit the downward extent of movement of the casing by said lug contacting the adjacent side of the C-clamp 1. Herein, limit of upward movement of the casing is deter,- mined by the laterally projecting portion 37 of the casing contacting the adjacent side of theC-clamp in the position of parts shown by Fig. 1. Preferably the finger-piece35 is made integral with the casing, and is so shaped and positioned as to enable the operator to grasp the ticket between his thumb and index finger, and insert the ticket in the slot, with the little finger of the same hand resting upon the finger-piece, under which conditions, by pressure on the finger-piece, the casing may be moved in a direction depending upon the relative lengths of the links 23 and 25 to cause the punching tool 13 to move inward relative to the casing and perforate the ticket.
It will be understood that wide deviations may be made from the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A punch having, in combination, a support, a casing containing a punching tool, a lever pivoted at one end portion to said support and at an intermediate portion to said casing, the other end portion of said lever contacting the end of said punching tool for i actuating the latter when said casing is moved relative to said support.
2. A punch having, in combination, a support, a casing, a freely rotatable reciprocating punching tool mounted on said casing, a lever pivoted at one end portion to said support and at an intermediate portion to said casing, the other end portion of said lever contacting the end of said punching tool for actuating the latter when said casing is moved relative to said support.
3. A punch having, in combination, a support, a casing, a freely rotatable punching tool reciprocatively mounted on said casing, 21- pair of equal links connecting said casing to said support, one of said links having an extension for engaging the end of said tool and reciprocating it relative to said casing when the latter is moved relative to said support. 7
4. A punch having, in combination, a support, a casing, a punching tool reciprocative- 1y mounted on said casing, said casing formed with a slot in the path of said tool for receiving an article to be punched, a fingerpiece adjacent said slot for moving said casing, a pair of equal links connecting said support and easing, one of said links having a part for moving said punching tool relative to said casing when the latter is moved relative to said support, and a spring for urging said punching tool into retracted position.
5. A punch having, in combination, a support, a casing, a freely rotatable punching tool reciprocatively mounted on said casing, said casing formed with a slot in the path of said tool for receiving an article to be punched, a finger-piece adjacent said slot for moving said casing, a pair of equal links connecting said support and easing, one of said links having an extension engaging with the end of said punching tool for moving the latter relative to said casing when said casing is moved relative to said support, and a spring for urging said punching tool into retracted position.-
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
JOHN B. GORMLEY.
