CORN HUSKING HOOK Filed March 24, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet Inventor June 14-, 1932. c E KLgNG 1 863 483 CORN 'HUSKING HOOK Filed March 24, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor A ilorney Patented June 14, 1932 PATENT @FFECE CALVIN EARL KLIN G, OF LACLEDE, MISSOURI CORN HUSKING HOOK Application filed March 24, 1931. Serial No. 524,927.
The present invention relates to corn husking hooks, and has for an important object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth devices of this character which are adapted to be mounted for cooperation with each other on the thumb and finger receiving portions of either side of a combined right and left hand love or mitten to facilitate gripping an ear of corn in a manner to prevent slipping thereof when the husk is removed, the thumb and finger hooks, of course, being adapted for use on the work engaging side of a conventional right hand or left hand glove or mitten.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, efficient and reliable in use, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further obj ects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. and wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan showing a combined right and left hand mitten having one side equipped with the thumb and finger hooks, constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a detail view looking at the inner or working side of the thumb portion of the mitten with the hook in accordance with this invention mounted thereon.
' Fig. 4 is a detail view in side elevation of the thumb unit removed from the mitten or glove.
Fig. 5 is a detail view in front elevation of the finger unit.
Fig. 6 is a detail view in side elevation of the switches illustrated in Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral 1 designates generally a combined right and left hand mitten including a body portion 2 upon the opposite sides of which the thumb portions 3 are provided, the mitten 1 further includes the wrist encircling portion 4.
The reference numeral 5 designates generally the finger unit which comprises a substantially zig-zag bar 6 from the angles and ends of which extend the integral, alternately long and short arms 7 and 8 respectively, each of which has formed integrally on the longitudinal sides of its free end portions a pair of opposed prongs or spurs 9. All of the arms 7 and 8 extend from one side of the bar 6.
Formed integrally with the outermost angles of the bar 6 and disposed on the other side of said bar 6, are the spaced, parallel I shanks 10 having their free end portions bent to provide the hooksll. A pin.12 has an eye 13 on one end engaged with one of the hooks 11, said pin 12 being insertible through the mitten and having its free end portion detachably engageable with the other hook 11 for securing the shanks 10 to the mitten.
A comparatively long end 14 has an eye 15 on one end rotatably encircling one of the outermost arms 7 The pin 14: is formed of resilient material as is also the pin 12. The pin 14 is insertible thru the adjacent portions of the mitten and the free end portion thereof is engageable over the outermost arm- 7 in the manner clearly seen in Fig. 1. It will thus be seen that the unit 1 is securely but detachably mounted in position on the finger portions of the mitten.
The thumb unit is designated generally by the reference numeral 17, and comprises a zig-zag bar 18 from the angles of which ex-' tends the integral, alternating long and short arms 19 and 20 respectively.
The arms 19 are all disposed on one side of the bar 18 and are provided on the longitudinal sides of their free end portions with pairs of integral spurs or prongs 21.
Extending from the angles of the bar 18 on the other side of said bar are the longitudinally curved shanks 22 having their free end portions looped in a manner to provide the eyes 23 which rotatably encircle the bar or back portions 24: of a safety pin 25 of conventional construction.
A pin 26 is provided with an eye 27 which rotatably encircles one of the arms 19, then the pin being insertible through the lower or inner side of the thumb portion of the mitten and having its free end portion adapted for engagement over the other arm 19 in the manner best illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The safety pin 25 is adapted to be secured to the back or outer side of the thumb portion of the mitten in the manner illustrated to advantage in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Thus, the prongs or spurs 21 are disposed in the correct position on the thumb portion of the glove. 5
It will be readily obvious that the thumb and finger units, may be expeditiously secured in position on the mitten or removed therefrom when desired. The construction of each of the units, is such that, with the exception of the securing pins, said units may be struck or stamped from a single sheet of material. Any desired metal may, of course, be used in the construction of the units.
It is believed that the many advantages of a device constructed in accordance with this invent-ion will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustratediand described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A device of the character described comprising a. bar, arms extending from one side of the bar, prongs projecting from the arms, shanks extending from the other side of the bar, and means for detachably securing the device to a support, said means including a pin loosely connected for swinging movement, and one end to the free end portion of one of the shanks, a free end portion of the pin being detachably engageable with the free end portions of the other of the shanks,-said pin adapted to be inserted through the support.
' 2. A device of the character described comprising a bar, arms extending from one side of the bar, prongs projecting from the arms, shanks extending from the other side i of the bar, and means for detachably securing the device to a support, said means including a pin loosely connected for swinging movement, and one end to the free end portion of one of the shanks. the free end portion of the pin being detachably engageable with the free end portions of the other of the shanks, said pin adapted to be. inserted through the support, said means further including a pin having one end pivotally connected to one of the outermost arms, the free end portion of the second named pin being operatively engageable with the other of the outermost arms, said second-named pin being insertible through the support 3.
