In said figures, the head rest assembly comprises -the support 1 having the clamping" head 2 which isprovided with the relatively movable dome-shaped hollow cap 3 throughwhich the tang 5 of the head-rest carrying vise (Sextends/ The head-rest frame is of well known construction, being provided with the transverse bar 7 having the oppositely directed outwardly curved prongs 8- which rockablysupport the opposed head-rest pads 9 in a wellknown manner. Thehead rest bar 7' is arranged for lateral'adjustment 9 between the jaws 1O and 11 and may be rigidly secured thereto inadjusted position by the screw 12 having the handle 13 arranged to bind said jaws upon said head-rest bar,as is common and well known in the art.
The support'l is arranged to bemounted'i to slide-up and down on a suitably provided .slideway on the back of a chair and is pros vided with opposed dovetailed surfaces, 15 which cooperate with correspondingly;
shaped surfaces on the slide of the chair back, and said support may be secured thereto by the thumb screw 16 in a manner common in the art.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the head 2 of the support 1 is circular in form and is provided with the recessed pocket 17 having the peripheral surface 19 against which the toggle shoes 20 are forcedby the toggle leaves or bars 21, the inner ends of which are engaged in suitably provided grooves 22 in the toggle knuckle 23 which is carried by the toggle frame 25.
Said toggle frame25 is provided with the slot 26 which serves as a guide for the toggle leaves or bars 21 and is provided with projections 27 and 28 which are arranged to extend into suitably provided'recesses 29 and 30 in the free edge 32 of said cap 3, which is also provided with alined recesses 33 through which the tang 5 of the head-rest vise 6 ex: tends with its flat side 35 bearing against the outer surface of the toggle frame 25.
The cap 3 is provided with projections 36 d on one side thereof which bear against the outer surface of the toggle frame 25, the remaining inner surface of the'edge 32 of said cap being spaced from the outer surface of said toggle frame by the tang 5, so that when said cap and toggle frame are drawn together the tang is rigidly clamped therebetween.
The head 2, the knuckle 23 and'the cap 3 are provided with central apertures 39, 40 and '41respectively through which the retaining bolt 42 extends with its head 43 bearing against the outer fiat surface 44 of the cap 3 and with its threaded end 45 projecting beyond the head 2. Mounted on the threaded end of the bolt 42 is the threaded hub 46 of the adjusting lever 47' by the rotation of which the cap 3 and toggle frame 25 are drawn together toward the head 2 which effects binding of said tang.5 between the cap 3 and toggle frame 25 and also forces the toggle leaves or bars 21 toward a common plane to eflect frictional engagement of the toggle shoes 20 against the inner friction surface 19 of the head 2 of the support 1.
As shown in Figs. 2, 7 8 and 9, the toggle frame 25 is provided with a central aperture- 50 having the shouldered seat 51 which serves as a rest for the replaceable toggle knuckle 23' which may preferably be formed of hardened steel and which is arranged to be held in said toggle frame against the seat 51 by the screws 52, the heads of which, as shown in Fig.3, extend into suitably provided recesses53 in the peripheral margin of the toggle knuckle, whereby said knuckle is maintained in-such position as to insure that the toggle bar receiving grooves 22 are disposed in a position normal to the-slot 26 in the toggle frame 25.
My invention is advantageous inthat by a single movement of the hand lever 47 about sired force such as will absolutely prevent any movement between the component parts of the clamp.
I Although I have elected to show a specific form of toggle arrangement including toggle bars in the form of leaves seated in grooves in the toggle knuckle and having separate bearing shoes, other forms of toggle might be employed with equal facility and, therefore,
it is not desired to limit my invention, to the precise details of construction and arrangement as hereinset' forth, as itis obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features ing a clamp, comprising a head rotatably associated with relatively movable members ro tatable with respect to said head and in which said tang may be adjustably engaged, toggle means disposed between said head and associ ated members, and means arranged to draw l said members together towards said head to effect actuation of said toggle means and thereby rigidly engage said tang in adjusted relation with respect to said support.
2. A head-rest assembly comprising "a head-rest carrier having a tangand a support havinga clamp affording a pocket, a
relatively rotatable member opposed to said pocket and having a guide into which said tang is arranged to extend, toggles cooperative with the peripheral surface of said pocket, and means arranged to draw said member toward said pocket to contemporaneously effect jamming of said toggles in said pocket, and the rigid engagement of said tang with respect to said clamp. I
3. A head-rest assembly comprising, a head-rest carrier frame having a tang and a support having a clamp provided with a circular pocket, a relatively movable cap for said clamp, a toggle guide interposed between said cap and said pocket, and toggles having friction shoes engaged with the peripheral wall of said pocket, and means arranged to draw said cap and toggle guide together toward said pocket to effect clamping of said tang and vthe frictional engagement of said shoes'to afford a rigid assembly in which the component parts are in effect integrally united. v
4:- A head-rest assembly comprising a head-rest carrier frame having a tang and a support having a clamp provided with acircular friction surface and including a relatively movable cap having alined recesses, a toggle frame associated with said cap and having means interlocked therewith to prevent relative rotation, a knuckle carried by said frame, friction shoes arranged to frictionally engage said friction surface, toggle bars extending between said knuckle and said friction shoes, and means arranged to draw said cap toward said frame to effect rigid engagement of all of the parts of said assembly. 5. A head-rest assembly comprising a head-' rest carrier frame having a tang and a sup port having a clamp provided with a circular pocket and including a relatively movable cap having alined recesses therein through which said tang is arranged to extend, a toggle frame having means interlocked with said cap to prevent relative rotation and affording a toggle knuckle, toggle bars interposed between the peripheral surface of said pocket and said knuckle disposed in relatively angular relation to each other, and means tending to draw said cap and toggle frame together to rigidly lock the clamp members in rigid relation.
6. A head-rest assembly comprising a head-rest carrier frame having a tang and a support having a clamp including a head provided with a circular inner surface, a rela tively movable cap having alined recesses therein through which said tang is arranged to extend, a toggle frame having means interengaged with said cap to prevent relative rotation, a replaceable toggle knuckle carried by said toggle frame, toggle bars engaged with said knuckle and having friction shoes arranged to frictionally engage the inner surface of said head, a bolt extended through said cap and head, and a hand lever threadedly engaged with said bolt and arranged to draw said cap and toggle frame together toward said head and thereby effect rigid clamping of the assembled parts together.
7 A head-rest assembly comprising a head-rest carrier frame having a tang and a support having a clamp affording a head provided with a circular inner surface and including a cap having alined recesses therein through'which said tang is arranged to adjustablv extend and having projections at one side thereof,v a to 'le frame resting against said projections and extending free e from the balance of said cap but having means interen aged with the projections to prevent relative rotation, a toggle knuckle removably engaged with said frame and having transverse slots therein, toggle bars disposed in said slots, friction shoes associated with said toggle bars arranged to frictionally engage the inner surface of said clamp, a bolt extended through said clamp, means arranged to prevent rotation of said bolt in said clamp, and a hand lever in threaded engagement with said bolt arranged to draw said cap and frame together toward said head to efiect a rigid engagement of the component parts of said assembly.
8. A head-rest assembly comprising a head-rest carrier frame having a tang and a support having a clamp provided with a head having a circular inner surface, a relatively movable cap for said clamp, a slotted toggle frame spaced from said cap and arranged to bear upon said tang and having means arranged to interengage said cap to prevent relative rotation, a bearing knuckle carried by said toggle frame, toggle bars disposed in the slot in said toggle frame and arranged to rock on said knuckle andcooperative with said inner surface when moved toward a common plane, to prevent relative rotation of said cap with respect to said head, and a bolt having means arranged to draw said cap and frame together toward said head to rigidly clamp the component parts of said assembly together.
