This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a leveling device intended particularly for the rails of a track.
The invention has for an object the provision of a device of the class mentioned which is of simple durable construction, dependable in use and eficient in action, and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
The invention proposes two hinged sections, which when aligned are extendable across the rails of a track. Each section carries a bubble level for leveling the rails during construction of the track. 'When not in use, the leveling device may be folded for convenience in carrying. In extended positions, inter-engaging plungers from each of the sections should be arranged for maintaining alignment.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of one 39 section of a level constructed according to this invention.

The leveling device consists of two sections 10 and 11 and each consisting of an outer end member 12 formed with a horizontal finger 13 supporting a vertical adjustment screw 14:. An inner end bracket 15 is provided with eyes 16 for hinging, and is formed with a tubular portion 17 A plunger 18 is slidably mounted in the bracket 15 and is normally urged slightly outwards by a spring 19 atin the direction of the arrows 33 of Fig. 1.

Several longitudinal braces 21 are con nected between the end member 12 and the bracket 15 for holding these parts in fixed positions. A bubble level 22 is attached between the end member 12 and the bracket 15 by braces 23. A handle 24 connects with one of the longitudinal braces 21.
The sections 10 and 11 are hinged together at 16 and may be folded so as to be side by side as indicated by dot and dash lines 25 in Fig. 2. In this condition the handles 24 of each of the sections are adjacent each other and may be simultaneously gripped for carrying the device. When the sections are in line with each other, the plungers 18 of each of the sections inter-engage with each other andmaintain true alignment. The interengaging is accomplished by a stud 26 from one of the plungers engaging in a recess 27 formed in the other of the plungers.
In operation of the device, it is placed between the rails 28 of a track system. These rails are shown mounted upon ties 29 and the device is located at a position between the ties. The fingers 13 of each of the sections are rested upon the tops of the rails and the bubble levels 22 inspected for determining whether the rails are correctly positioned.
In the event that they are not, necessary changes must be made. The levels 22 may be viewed from the top due to an aperture 30 formed in the top of one of the braces 23. One or the other of the adjusting screws 14 may be turned down for causing the hubbles of the levels to seek their center lines, and according to the extension of the screw upon subsequent inspection, the amount that the rails must be adjusted may be determined.
When the device is not in use, the plungers 18 are manually forced apart against the ac tion of the springs 19 and then the sections are hinged about the points 16 so as to be side by side. In this condition it may be conveniently carried or may be stored in a small case.
l/Vhile I have shown anddescribed the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class described, con1- prising a pair of elongated sections adapted to be aligned in end contacting relations hingedly connected at their inner contacting ends and each section consisting of an outer end member formed with a horizontal finger, vertical adjustment screws engaged thru the finger, an inner end bracket with an eye for hinging, braces between the said member and bracket, a handle on one of the braces, said bracket including a tube, and a spring pressed plunger in the tube.

A device of the class described, comprising a pair of elongated sections adapted to be aligned in end contacting relations and hingedly connected at their inner contacting ends and each section consisting of an outer end member formed with a horizontal finger, vertical adjustment screws engaged through the finger, an inner end bracket with an eye for hinging, braces between the said member and br cket, a handle on one of the braces, a tube attached to each of the brackets, and a spring pressed plunger in each of the tubes, one of said plungers being recessed, a stud on the other plunger interengageable with said recess for holding the sections in an ex tended position.
