Description

`D, as shown at same figure.
.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE;
, DANIEL sonnerie, or MAQUON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
`Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 186,274, dated J anuary 16, 1877; application -led August 29, 1876.
.To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, DANIEL Setmana, of Maquvon, in the county of Knox and 4State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refscribed, and set forth in the claims hereto annexed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, partly broken away, to show certain working parts. Y
Referring to the drawing by letters, letters A A represent two gates, the gate A pivoted at a between posts B B, and the gate A' pivoted at a between posts B`I B. The posts B B are connected 'at-their upper ends by a bar, G, which is elevated high enough to allow the gates to be turned edgewise beneath it. A horizontal slot, D, is formed in one end of the bar C, either by cutting through it or by cutting it partly away and placing a plate, d, beneath it. E E and F F represent two pairs ot' pulleys, mounted and arranged in the slot D, as plainly shown at Fig. l, where the bar C` is partly broken away to show the pulleys. Gis also a pulley, seated in the slot His a groove in the under side ofthe bar G, extending from the slot D to the other end of the bar, where a pulley, h, is mounted, as shown by dotted lines in the drawings. I I are posts erected y as shown at Fig. 2, and having each a pulley, fi, in its upper end. J is a cord, extending over the pulleys and between the pairs of pulleys E and F, and its pendent ends provided with stops j. Midlength of the cord J a cord, K, is attached, which passes between 'thelpulleys F F and over the pulis attached to the cord J at about the same place as is the cord K, and extends along the groove H over the pulley h, and thence downward, and is connected at its other end to a bail, n, the ends of which are journaled to the latches M, so that when the cord N is drawn it will first raise and disengage the latches M from the studs Z, and then raise the gate A, and in closing the cord N will `hold the latches M elevated until the gates are closed, when the latches drop by their own gravity.
l?V represents projecting guides, one on each side ofthe gate A', to receive the gate A and secure both gates against lateral detlection. Q represents guides projecting'upward from the ground for the same purpose.
The operation fartherl than already described is evident. The ends of the cord J extend downward, in reach of approaching footman, equestrian, or person in a vehicle, and by drawing on either end of the cord J the cords K and N will raise the gates A Al to the position shown by dotted lines A" at Fig. 1, when, by slacking the cord J, the momentum of the* gates will carry them over to the position shown by dotted lines A at same figure. The stops j serve as guides to indicate when to slacken the cord J in opening and in closing the gates.
rIhe closing is efected by a reverse operation of the parts in an evident manner.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the pivoted gates A A and posts I, the cords J, K, and N, at-` tached to each other, as described, and arranged to operate with the pulleys E, F, G, In testimony that' I claim the foregoing, as and h, als described, and for the purpose specimy own I affix my signature in presence of fied. two Witnesses.
2. In combination with the cords J K and N, pulleys E, F, G, and h, and pivoted ,gates t DANIEL SGHERER' A A', the hinged gravitating latch M, subl Witnesses: stantially as described, and for the purpose W. B. RICHARDS,
specified. THOS. MOKEE.
