Description
W. J'. METCALF.
SAFETY-HOOKS ANIllBREAST-STRAPS FOR HARNESS.
No.186;147,' Patented Jan.9, 1877.
WITNESSES INVENTOR Wm, W2 J Me ZcaZf. %rfl9M-n N- FETERSv PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON D C ATTORN EYS UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE WILLIAM J. METGALF, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEME NT IN SAFETY-HOOKS AND BREAST-STRAPS FOR HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [86,147, dated January 9, 1877 application filed November 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. METGALF, of Decatur, in the county of Macon, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Hook Combination; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a safetyhook combination, for use with neck-yokes or other purposes, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A represents an elongated metallic loop, which works on the breast-strap B of the harness, and is formed with two parallel forked projections or lips, U 0. Between these lips or projections is pivoted a hook, D, coustructedas shown in Fig. 2tbat is, the point of the hook is extended backward. E represents a loop, hinged or pivoted on opposite sides to the main loop A.
This device works with the safety-hook pointing downward. The main or upper loop A works stationary on the breast-strap B of the harness. The rear loop E is fastened to one end of the pole-strap G. The ring H, on the end of the neck-yoke, works in the safetyhook D.
This invention saves time and trouble while hitching to, or unhitching from, a vehicle, as the ring on the end of the neck-yoke is simply placed in the safety-hook.
By the old method, the pole-strap is run over the end of the neck-yoke, and then the breast-strap through the ring of the yoke, and fastened to the hame on the opposite side. Time, trouble, and labor are thus saved, as there is only one fastening or connection to be made.
This safety-hook may be used for any purpose where applicable.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the loop A, provided with the forked lips or projections U U, the pivoted hook D, and hinged loop E, substan tially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of October, 1876.
WILLIAM J. METGALF.
