Description
T. F. KEATING & W. H. TAYLOR.
Y SASHFASTENER- No.186 ,137. Patented Jan.9,1s77.
UNITED -STATES THOMAS F. KEATING AND WARREN H. TAYLOR, OF STAMFORD, CONN PATENT OFFICEC ASSIGNORS TO THE YALE LOCK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
i IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,137, dated January 9, 1877 application filed September 8, 1876.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that we, THoMAs F. KEATING and WARREN H. TAYLoR, both of Stamford, Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Sash-Fasts, of which the following is a specification Our invention relates to a sash fast of the class in which the fastening-bolt can be secured either in the locked or advanced position, or in the retracted or unlocked position-that is to say, either in engagement with the window-frame or disengaged therefrom.
Our invention consists of the combination, with the fastening-bolt of a sash-fast, of a dog or guard, independent thereof, and adapted to be operated by means of a key from the inside of a window to which it is applied, to engage it with said bolt in either its advanced or retracted position, or disengage it therefrom, and leave the bolt unsecured, free to be operated as an ordinary sashfast unprovided with'a locking device.
In the drawings, Figure l represents the form in which we prefer to embody and apply our invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are side views of the same. Fig. et is a view representing a section of a window sash and frame with our fast applied.
A is a case containing appropriate locking mechanism to be operated by a key. B is a locking-bolt, preferably a spring-bolt, provided with notches or grooves b b', into which the dog C,of the locking mechanism may enter to hold the bolt, either in the advanced or retracted position. We do not confine ourselves to the precise details of construction here specified.
By securing or locking the bolt in engagement with the window-frame the sash can'be held down or up, and be incapable of being of engagement with the window-frame the sash can' be moved as if provided with no sash-fast. When the bolt-lock is not operated to secure the bolt in either the advanced or retracted position, our sash-fast performs the functions of an ordinary fast not provided with a lock.
It will be seen that, by our improvements, the fast can be used as an ordinary springfastening when left unlocked, which it is desirable to do for convenience at times 5 and that, when desired, the window may be locked securely in the required position.
We are aware that night-latches have been constructed to be opened from without by means of a key, and provided with a sliding stop for securing the bolt from within, either in the locked or the unlocked position, and, therefore, we do not broadly claim this construction, nor, as shown in a night-latch,could it be employed for a sash-fast, because it is not operated wholly from within; but
What we claim as our invention is 1. In combination with the spring-fastening-bolt B, provided with notches b b', the guard or dog C, adapted to engage therewith and be operated by a key from within, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The sash -fast hereinbefore described, constructed to be operated wholly from the inside of a Window to which it is applied, consisting of the combination of the case, the bolt, the locking dog moving transversely thereto, and the key operating directly on the dog, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names.
. THOMAS F. KEATING.
WARREN H. TAYLOR.
