Description

E. BUSS,
CARPET-BEATER.
No.186,076, Patented Jan.9, 1877.

PATENT QFFIGE.
EZRA BUSS, or SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-BEATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [86,076, dated January 9, 1877; application filed April 17, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA BUss, of Springfield, in the county of Clarke and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Carpet-Beater; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a side view of the carpetbeater Fig. 2, a side view of the same, taken at right angles to the view in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a view corresponding to the view in Fig. 1, with a central longitudinal section of the handle; Fig. 4, a front end view of the same.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
My invention consists in a hand instrument for beating carpets, substantially as hereinafter specified.
The carpet-beater, in its simplest form, is composed of a whip of wirepreferably steel wire-bent around at the outer or free end, and having the inner end or ends inserted in a suitable handle.
The construction which I prefer embraces additional features of improvement, as represented in the drawings. The wire whip A, doubled at the middle, so as to form a rounded end, a, as shown, has also a circular bend, b, on each part of the wire, near the handle B, so as to give additional flexibility and elasticity thereto. Its inner ends are inserted in the handle, and have eyes or rounded loops-c 0, through which a pivot-pin, d, passes, on which the whip turns or vibrates, and the handle has slotsff, in which the whip vibrates to some extent, so that it will be free to strike the carpet and rebound therefrom without impediment by the handle. At the edges of the slots are blocks or pieces 9 g, of india-rubber or equivalent elastic material, so that the whip will strike them in its movements, and have a more elastic rebound thereby, and not jar the hands through the handle. All this part of the handle is inclosed by a ferrule, h, which fits on the slightly-tapering end of the handle B, and can be easily removed.
The whip may be three feet long, more or less.
This instrument is very efficient and easily operated. It is cheap and durable.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A carpet-beater composed of an elastic wire, A, and handle B, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. In a carpet-beater, a double-armed elastic wire, bent around at the free end, and pivoted at its other end to a handle, B, substantially as herein specified.
3. In a carpetbeater, a handle, B, provided with slots ff, in which the wire whip has a limited vibratory or swinging movement, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
4. In a carpet-beater, a handle, B, provided with india-rubber blocks g 9, against which the whip strikes in its vibratory movements, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
5. In a carpet-beater, an elastic-wire whip, provided with bends c c, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
Specification signed by me this 28th day of February, 1876.
EZRA BUSS.
