Description

F. J. SEYMOUR.
FLOOR-PROTECTORS FOR STOVES.
Patented Jan.9, 1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
FREDERICK J. SEYMOUR, OF WOLCOTTVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOOR-PROTECTORS FOR STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,063, dated January 9, 1877 application filed October 31, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. SEY- MOUR, of Wolcottville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Floor-Protectors for Stoves, &c., of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to the peculiarity of the rib surrounding the plate of zinc or other metal forming the floor-protector.
The object of the invention is to make a heavy and strong rib out of comparatively thin sheet metal, so that the rib will not be bent or become out of shape by the use to which the same is put, and at the same time the floor-plate can be easily cleaned from the ashes and similar material often falling upon the same.
This invention is an improvement upon that for which Letters Patent were granted to me October 24, 1876.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a section of the rib at the edge of the floor-plate, and Fig. 2 is a plan of a part of the edge.
The floor-plate is circular, elliptical, or of other desired shape, and the edge is formed into a head or rib by rolling up the sheet metal by dies or by a spinning operation, so that there are two thicknesses of the sheet metal in the upper and outer portions of the rib, as set forth in my aforesaid Letters Patent.
My present invention relates to the double fold made in the sheet metal at the portion a of the rib between the rib b and the plain surface 0 of the sheet metal forming the floor-proteotor.
This double fold a is bent up in the act of embossing the sheet metal of the rib, and results from the embossing roller or tool flattening the cylindrical rib to lessen its height, and at the same time carrying down a double fold of the metal between the rib and the fiat portion of the plate 0. This fold tends to produce a tension upon the fiat sheet metal, and thereby cause the said plate to lie flat, and at the same time an incline is formed to the inner edge of the rib to facilitate the removal of ashes, dust, &c., over the edge of the floorplate, because there is not a groove at this portion of the plate, which groove would exist were it not for the double fold aforesaid.
I claim as my invention- The floor-plate, having a rib of sheet metal around its edge and a double fold at a in the metal, for the purposes and substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 26th day of October, A. D. 1876.
FREDK. J. SEYMOUR.
