In carrying out my invention I provide a structure having a plurality of money compartments of such a character and so controlled that access can be had to but one compartment at any one time, in the course of a days business, the several compartments being so controlled thatthey Wlllb rendered successively accessible at predetermined intervals. Thus by dividing the money among the several compartments in accordancewith the anticipated needs of the days business the money in all the compartmentssave onewill be securely locked against'ac'cessat alltimes.

' may be varied according to the requirements of ditleren't users. Ordinarily a bank is open for business not to exceed sixhours aday. The funds for tlieinitial period are not placed in the protecting device but are placed upon the counter inthe usual manner. There a fore, it is not necessary to provide a'c'omp'a'rta inent for the initial period of business. As a matter of convenience of illustration, I have 1 in the present 'instanceshown five compartmerits, one foreach hour after the'fi'rst hour; Means are provided whereby access may be had to the several compartmentsatthe be ginning of the-days business to permitthe money to be divided among'the same; but
after the money has been divided the device is locked and the compartments will be accessible only at the predetermined intervals. Themeans which provides access te the several compartments at the beginning ofthe days business maybe utilized toprovide' access to the compartments in case or an emerfgcn cy during the day'but the'controlling me ans is ofsnch a character that the compartments will not berender ed accessible foi'f'a consid-' erable period after the emergency release has been operated, say fifteen minutes. Consequently in the event of a robbery it would be necessary for the robbers to wait in the bank ing room for this period of'fifteen minutes before access could be had to the compartments, and it is seldom that the situation is such that they are willing to wait for that length of time.
V In the particular embodiment of the invention here illustrated the apparatus-comprises two relatively movable structures one of which contains the several compartments and the other of which is provided with an opening adapted to be brought into linesuccessively with the several compartments by the relative movement of the two structures. These structures may take various forms and movement may be imparted to the movable structure in various ways but in the preferred I form of the device I prefer that that structure bring those compartments successively into which contains the.compartments shall be movably mounted-in a casing w ich is provided with an opening so arranged that the movement of the compartment structure will line with the opening. In the particular form here shown the compartment structure is cir-- 'cular in form, as shown at 10, and is mounted on a shaft 11 for rotation in a casing 12 having an. opening 13 in the wall thereof adjacent to the periphery of the rotatable structure. The several compartments open through the periphery of the rotatable struc- 3 ture and as this structure is rotated step by step these compartments will be brought successively into line with the opening 13, thus rendering them accessible. All the compartments except the one which is in line with the opening 13 are completely closed by the ca"- ing and are therefore inaccessible. The compartments are formed by providing therotatable structure with radial partition 14- and suitable retaining devices, such as clamping 3 members 15 are provided to retain the money,
which is usually paper money, with n the respective compartments as the structure rotates. Any suitable means may be provided for imparting rotatory movement to the ceptacle or compartment structure 10. As here shown,that structure is rigidly secured to thejshaft 11 and one end of the shaft e tends'through the end wall of the casing and is provided with a knob or hand wheel 16 by means of which the shaft and the receptacle may be rotated. The rotatable structure as here illustrated is divided into six sections five of which constitute money compartments and the sixth of which has its outer end closed, shown at 17, andthis closed section may be moved into line with the opening when access to all the money compartments is to be prevented, as, for example, during the first period 7 of the days business.

In the present instance a plate or disk 18 is rigidlysecured to and forms part of the rotatable structure and has a series of apertures 19 adapted to receive a locking member, each apertured portion of the plate constituting a locking part for the rotatable structure. These locking parts or when any one ofthose compartments is in line with the opening 13 some one ofthe apertures will be in a position to receive the lock- 20 slidably mounted in a bracket 21 and in standards 22 within the casing, the standards 22 also constituting supports for the shaft 11. Preferably the bolt 20 is yieldably pressed toward the plate 18 so that it will.
enter one of the recesses 19 whenever a compartment is moved into line with the opening. As here shown, a collar 23 is. secured to the bolt and a spring 2% is confined between that collar and out of the standards 22 and serves to press the bolt toward the locking plate 18. The locking member or plate 18' as here shown has peripheral teeth which are engaged by a detent 18a to hold the rotatable structure against reverse movement.
Time controlled means are provided for controlling the movement of the bolt 20 to its inoperative position, that is, out of engagement with the locking member 18. In the present apparatus the time controlled mechanism merely releases the bolt for withdrawal and other means are provided for mounted in a bracket 26 and is provided with an opening out of line with the bolt 20. The positionof the retaining device with relation to the bolt is such-that when the opening 27 is out of line with the bolt the retaining device will positively prevent the withdrawal of the bolt from the locking member 18, but when the opening 27 is in line with the bolt thelatter is free to move to its inoperative position. Manually operated means are provided for actuating the bolt after it has been released.

After the bolt has been withdrawn the rotatable structure is advanced by means'of the hand wheel 16, or otherwise, to move a succeeding compartment into line with an opening inthe-casing. To prevent the bolt being held in its inoperative position while continued movement is imparted to the rotatable structure I have provided means controlled by the movement of the rotatable structure to move the latch or dog 29 outof engageable structure that when one of thecompartments is in its alined position the nose ofthe arm 34 will lie in the recess between two of the lobes of the cam, thus permitting the dog to enter the notch in the bolt. J The first movement of the rotatable structure will cause the cam to actuate the arm 34 and lift the dog 29 out ofenga-gement with the bolt, thus automatically releasing the latter for operation by the spring.
In that form of the apparatus shownin Figs. 1 to 8 the retaining device which holds the bolt normally in .its locking position is actuated by electrically operated devices. In the preferred form one end ofthe retainingmember is connected with a core 36 of a solenoid 37 and the ot-her'end' of the retaining member is connectedwith a core 38 of a solenoid 39. The circuits for both solenoids arenormally open and each circuit is connected with a suitable source of current, such as a battery 40. Interposed in one sideof the circuit for the solenoid 37 is a time controlled circuit breaker and closer of such a character that it will close the circuit through the solenoid 37 at predetermined intervals, will hold the circuit closed for a briefperiod of time and will then again open the same, thus energizing the solenoid for an interval sufiici-ent to permit the core 36 to be retracted and the retaining device moved to its inoperative position, that is, to aposition in which the opening 27 therein will be in line with the bolt 20. In the present ar rangement the circuit breaker and'closer comprises an annular member 41 having thereon six contacts 42 spaced equal, distances about.

and so arranged that it will'operatively engage the fixed contact 46 upon the movement 0f the bolt to its operative POSitiOIlytllUS causing the solenoid 39 to be energized just prior to thecompletionof that movement of the bolt and theretaining device movedto its operative position. As here shown, the fixedcontact 46 is in the form of a resilient finger and the movable contact member 47 has on one side thereof a facing 49 of insulating material, so that the circuit will not be closed whenthe bolt is moved to its inoperative position.
Therefore, it will be apparent that' at'intere vals of one hour during a business day, orat such other intervals that may be determined upon, the rotatable structure will be released and may be advanced one step to bring .a succeeding money compartment into line with the opening in the casing, whereby it will be rendered accessible. Uponthe completion of this movement the rotatable structure is automatically locked and will not be again released until, the end of the next interva'l of one hour. Ho-wever, it is desirable that means should be provided for permitting the continued movement of the rotatable structure to enable the money to be placed in the several compartments 7 or to permit access to be had thereto in case of an emergency. 'Ihavetheree fore provided an emergency release and have so constructed the same that access cannot be .had tothe compartments until'the end of -a definite period of time after the emergency.

I The circuit for this solenoid is connected with the battery 40 and one; side of the, circuit is connected with a 'fixedcontact member 54 which is here shown as adjustably mounted on a curved support 55 so that" its position may be varied at will. The other side of the circuit is connected with a'movable contact member 56 adapted to be moved into engagement with the fixed contact member 54 so as to close the circuit and energize the solenoid 53, but the movable contact mem ber is time controlled and a .definite interval mustexpire before it contacts with the-mem-' ber'54. As here shown, the movable contact member 56 is in'the form of an arm rigidly secured to a clutch member 57 which is carried by the inner end of a shaft 58 slidably mounted in the side wall of the casing 12 and having on its outer end a handle 59 by means of which it may be manipulated. A spring 60 holds the shaft 58 normally in its retracted position. A second clutch member 61 is secured to a shaft 62 actuated by a motor, preferably the clock mechanism 45. When the shaft 58 is forced inwardly against the action of the spring 60 the two clutch members 57 and 61 will be operatively engaged and will be held in that position by means of a lug 63 on the shaft 58. This lug is normally mounted in a recess in the wall of the casing but is so arranged that when the shaft is moved inwardly to connect the clutches it will be moved out of the recess and will engage the inner surface of the wall. It will be apparent, therefore, that the movable contact member 56 is thus connected with the clock mechanism and will be brought into contact with the fixed contact member 54 after an interval of time determined by the distance between the two contact members; It will be noted that the clutch member 57 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 58 so that it may rotate with relation to that shaft and, when disconnected from the clutch member 61, the contact arm will move to its lowermost, position by gravity, thus causing the movable contact member to be always spaced the same distance from the fixed contact member when the operativeconnection is established between the two clutches; When the solenoid 53 has been energized and the closure 51 unlocked this closure may be removed'and free access is allowed to the interior of the casing. To facilitate the quick adjustment of the rotatable structure I have provided the circuit for the solenoid 37 with a manually operated switch 64 which, when'closed, will bridge the time controlled circuit breaker and closer and maintain thesolenoid energized, thus holding the retaining device in its inoperative position. r
In Figs. 9 to 12 I have illustrated mechanical means for controlling the movement of i the bolt 20. As there shown, the bolt retaining device is in the form 'ofa plate 65 pivotally mounted at one end on a bracket' 66 and having near the other end thereof an opening 67 movable into and out of line with the bolt 20. Connected with the motor driven shaft 44 of the clock mechanism is'an annular member 68 having thereon a plurality of trip devices 69 each of which is provided with an inclined surface.
ing plate 65 has at'its upper side a hookshaped portion 70 which overhangs theannular members 68 and limits the downward movement of the retaining plate, the arrangement of this being such that when in engagement with the annular member 68 it will support the aperture 67 in the plate out of line with the bolt. The tripping devices 69 are spaced equal distances about the annular member and are adapted to engage beneath the hook shaped finger 70 and lift the retaining plate to bring the apertures into line with the bolt this operation taking place at fixed intervals, in the present instance, once every hour. In order to hold the retaining device in its inoperative position for a period of time sufficient togive ample opportunity for the manipulation of the bolt to release the roits rear face a lug 90 which will engage a resilient latch 91 when the plate is elevated and hold it in its inoperative position until the bolt 20 is withdrawn. and when the bolt is again moved to its locking position the retaining plate will move by gravity to its operative position. At the end of this period of time the tripping device moves out of engagement with the finger 7 0 and the retaining device moves by gravity to its operative position.
In the mechanically operated device the closure 51 for the opening in the end of the casing is locked in its closed position by a bolt 71 and this belt is provided with a stud 72 arranged to be engaged by a trip member or cam surface 73 on a' disk 74 which is secured to a clutch member 75 mounted 'ona shaft 76 similar to the clutch member and shaft 57 and 58 above described. A second clutch member 7 7 is connected with the motor and when the two clutch members are brought into operative engagement the disk 74 will be driven bythe motor and after the lapse of a predetermined period the cam surface 73 will engage the stud 72 to'move the bolt 71 to its inoperative position. The bolt is provided with a notch 78 and a latch 7 9 is pivotally supported above the bolt and is adapted to move by gravity into the notch when the bolt is moved to its retracted posi tion and thus hold the bolt in that position.
If desired, the bolt 71 may be extended to a so arranged that it will engage the lug 80 and retract the bolt 71 at the end of a days business.
While I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the details thereof as various modifications within the scope of the claims may occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having now fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a structure having a plurality of compartments and a second structure arranged to close all but'one of said compart-,
ments, one of said structures being movable with relation to the other structure to successively open said compartments, and time controlled lockingmechanism to retain said movable structure in each successive position for a predetermined interval.
2. A device of the character described oomprising a structure having a plurality of compartments and a second structure arranged to close all but one of said compart ments, one of said structures being movable with relation to the other structure to successively open said compartments, and means including acontinuously operating motor to advance said movable structure step. by step at intervals determinedby said motor, 1

A device of the "character described, comprising a structure having a plurality of compartments, and a second structure arranged to close all but one of said compartments, one of said structures being movable with relation to the other structure to suecessively open said compartments, mechanism to lock said movable structure in each position to which it ismoved to open one of said compartments, and time controlled means to control the operation of saidlocking mechanism to release said movable structure.
4. A device of the character described,
comprising a structure having a plurality of compartments, and a second structure to close all but one of said compartments, one of said structures being movable with relation to the other structure to successively open said compartments, mechanismto lock said movable structure in each position to which it is moved to open one of said compartments, time controlled means to control the operation of said locking mechanism to release said movable structure, and means for advancing said movable structure after'it has been released.
5. A device of the character describedcomprising a structure having a plurality of compartments and a second structure arranged to close all but one of said compart ments, one of. said structures being movable with relation to the other structure to successively open said compartments, said mov' able structure having a locking part for each operative position thereof, a locking member,
means for automatically moving said locking member into locking engagement with said locking parts as they are-moved into line therewith, means to, normally retain said locking member in engagement with one'of said locking parts, and time controlled means for releasing said locking member at fixed intervals of time.

A device of the character described comprising a structure hav ng a plurality of compartments and a second structure *arranged to close all but one of said compartments, one of said structures being movable with relation to the other structure to successively open said compartments, said mov-' able structure having a locking part foreach operative position thereof, alocking member, yieldable means to move said locking member into looking; engagementwith said locking parts successively as they are moved into line ther'ewith',"means for withdrawing said locking member, means to normally prevent the withdrawal ofsaid locking member, and time controlled means for releasing said looking member for withdrawal at fixed intervals of time. l r a a i 7. A device of the character described com- A prising a structure having a. plurality of com into locking engagement with said locking parts successively as they are moved into line therewith, means for withdrawing said locking member, a retaining device movable into and out of a position to 'holdsaidlocking member against withdrawal, time controlled means to move said retaining device to a position to release said locking member, and means controlled by said locking member for moving said retaining device to its holding position when said locking member is restored to its operative position.

A device of the character described comprising a structure having a plurality of compartments and a second structure arranged to close all but one of said compart ments, one of said structures being movable with relation to the other structure to suecessively open sald compartments, said movable structure having a locking part for each operative position thereof, a locking member, yieldable means to move said locking member into locking engagement with said locking parts successively as they are moved into line therewith, means for, withdrawing said locking member, a retaining device movable into and out of a position to hold said locking member against withdrawal, a motor adapted to operate continuously at a uniform speed, and means controlled by said motor to move said retaining device to an inoperative position at fixed intervals.

A device of the character described comprising a structure having a plurality of compartments and a second structure arranged to close all but one of said compartments, one of said structures being movable with relation to the other structure to successively open said compartments, said movable structure having a locking part for each operative position thereof, a locking member, yieldable means to move said locking member into locking engagement with said looking parts successively as they are moved into line therewith, means for withdrawing said locking member, a retaining device movable into and out of a position to hold said locking member against withdrawal, a motor adapted to operate continuously at a uniform speed, and means controlled by said motor to move into and out of a position to hold'said lock- ,member against withdrawal, electrically opsition.
