IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING FOOT-RESTS FOR CHAIRS.
Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 186,000, dated January 9, 1877; application filed May 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL BRENNAN, of East Cambridge, of the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a elevation, invention.
In carrying out my combine, with a chair or the frame thereof, a leg-rest, arranged to turn from a horizontal position, or thereabout, up into an inclined one against the back of the chair or its frame.
also combine with such a movable leg-rest and a chair-frame, one or more short posts or projections extended up from the frame, and being so arranged top View,
and Fig.2 a side of a chair-frame provided with my (I wearing the chair. Furthermore, I form or construct the to receive its pivots, such to enable the leg-rest to be moved outwardly or inwardly more or less to adjust it to the legs or feet of a sitter.
In the drawings, A denotes a chair-frame Without its upholstery. B is the leg-rest, which consists of two arms or bars, a a, and a connectingboard, b, all arranged, as shown. of'ench of the bars a a a long slotted metallic plate, 0, is bolted, the slot of such plate being represented at d. These plates project from the bars a a, lap on the chair-frame, and are connected therewith by headed pivots e 6 going through the slots and fixed in the chair-frame. At its front the seat part of the chair-frame has two short standards, f f. for the leg-rest to bear upon when down, these standards being of sufficient height to prevent it from contact with and wearing the cushion or upholstery of the chair. 0n turning the leg-rest up and rearward far enough, it will bear against the back portion of the frame in manner as represented by dotted lines at B, in which case it may be used as a rest for the head of a sitter, particularly should it be suitably cushioned or upholstered for such purpose.
I claim- 1. In combination with a leg-rest B applied to such frame, so as to be capable of being turned from or about a horizontal position up against the back of the said frame or the chair, all as specified.
2. In combination with the clmir-fraine A and the leg-rest B applied to such frame, so as to be capable of being turned from or about a horizontal position up against the back of the chair or frame, as explained, one or more standards or st0ps,f, projecting up from, or so arranged with, the frame as to support, when it may be down the leg-rest, at an altitude to keep it out of contact with, and from wearing, the cushion-seat or the upholstered part thereof of the chair.
In combination with the chair-frame A, the leg-rest B applied thereto, so as not only to be capable of being turned upward against the back, but of being, when down, capable of being moved more or less outward or inward, so as to adjust its cross-bar nearer to, or farther from, the chair-frame, all being essentially as specified.
