ATTACHMENI FOE: PENCILS AND LIKE INSTRUMENTS Application filed September 24, 1930. Serial No. 483 995.
This invention relates to improven'ients in ing the same on a pencil in point-protecting attachments for pencils and like instruments. position; and
One of the Objects of this invention is to Fig. is a view, in elevation, similar to provide an attachment for pencils and like Fig. 2, of the attachment removed from the instruments comprising a cap and means for point and being moved along the shank of mounting the same so that the cap will at the pencil toward the opposite end thereof. all times be connected with, the pencil and Referring now to these drawings, which il will be capable of being moved alternately lustrate a preferred embodiment of my invenfrom one end of the pencil to the other and tion, 1 indicates a pencil having a point 2 is consequently capable of being utilized as which it is desired to protect. In accordance a point protector when moved to the pointed with my invention, a cap 3 adapted to iit over end of the pencil and as an ornamental cap the point of the pencil is provided with elonor rubber holder when moved to the other gated legs 3, 3* which are hinged to a slide end of the pencil. memher i which is fitted to the shank of the Still another object of my invention is to pencil and is movable along the same from provide an attachment of the character specione end thereof to the other. As illustrated, fled *ith a clip formed integrally with said the Shde i comprises a metal sleeve having attachment. ribs fl, 4' struck up at opposite ends thereof Still other objects of my invention are to to reinforce the same and this sleeve also has 20 provide an ornan ental Of rubber-holding (gap struck up thGIBfIOlD at opposite SlClES plVOt having a hinged connection with a slide memups 4 i adapted to receive the heads 5 of her capable of being fitted to and moved 1onrivets 5 on which is mounted the legs 3, 3 of gitudinally along the shank of the pencil to the attachment, the rivet being passed through a -1 11i; seating on pposite ends thereof, and the GXtlGHlltlBS Of the legs 3, 3 and. headed 25 to rgvide uch a hae which be ca- 38 at 5 011 the 0111761 side thereof. In other respects the construction shown 1n Flg. 4: 1s similar to that 1 shown and described in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5.
The operation of the device is as follows: Assuming that the cap is mounted on the pointed end of the pencil as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 and it is then desired to use the point, the cap is thereupon moved upwardly until the point is freed from the body of the cap whereupon the point is swung .outwardly between the legs of the capand the slide is then moved downwardly, as illustrated in Fig. 5, until the body of the cap reaches the end of the pencil when the cap and slide is again slid upwardly onto the endof the pencil, as shown in Fig. 3. 0bviously, the point or shank may bemovediin opposite directions through either of the side openings 3, 3 and the cap may thereupon with the slide be moved along the shank to the other end of the pencil.
Havingdescribed my invention, I claim 1. An attachment for pencils andlike instruments embodying, in combination, a cap adapted to be removably mounted onone end of a pencil, and an annularslidable member connected to said cap andmovablealongthe shank of the pencil for permitting the removal of said cap from one endof thepencil and the mounting of the same 'onthesother end thereof.
.2. An attachment for pencilsand like.in-
' struments embodying, incombination, acap adapted to be removably mounted on one end of a pencil, and an annular slidable member movable along the shank of the .peneiL-said cap and slidable member having a hinged connection and side openings between the cap and slidable member to permit removal of the cap from one end of the pencil, the swinging of the said cap about the hinge connection with the slidable member and the movement with the slidable member toward the opposite end of the pencil to removably mount the cap thereon.
An attachment forpencils and like instruments.embodying, in combination, a cap adapted to be removably mounted on one end of a pencil, and an annular slidable member movable along the shank ofthe pen'cil, said cap and slidable member having a hinged connection formed above raised bearing cups 2 on the slidable member and said cap having side openings between the cap and slifdable member to permit removal of thecapfrom one end of the pencil, the swingingof said cap about the hinge connection with the i slidable member and the movement With the slidable member toward the opposite end of the pencil to removably mount the cap thereon.
In witness whereof, I have signed my name to the foregoing specification.
LESTER J. HYMANS.
