UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUSSELL SMITH HARRIS, OF ST. MABYS, ONTARIO, CANADA PENCIL SHARPENER Applicationfiled ltay 29, 1930. Serial No. 456,979.
This present invention relates to certain can be more clearly described when reference new and useful improvements in a pencil is had to the drawings forming a part of this sharpener. disclosure, wherein like characters indicate The primary object of the invention resides like parts throughout the several views.
in the provision of a pencil sharpener which In the drawings 55 will eficiently serve thepurpose for which it Figure 1 is a longitudinal horizontal secis intended while rotating the pencil. tion through the pencil sharpener with one Another object of the invention resides in section of the casing removed; the provision of a pencil sharpener of the Figure 2 is an end elevation, showing the character stated which may be readily held clamping means for the pencil; and 0 stationary and a pencil rotated therein to Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevation, sharpen the pencil. at right angles to Figure 2.
A further object of the invention resides in Referring more in detail to the drawings, the provision of a pencil sharpener of the it is to be noted that the casing 6 which is of character stated which will serve to firmly elongated cylindrical form is constructed in hold the pencil and guide the same as it is sections or in halves connected by appropriate sharpened. Y connecting members extended through reg- A still further object of the invention reistering outwardly directed ears 7 at the sides in the provision of a pencil sharpener longitudinal edges of the sections or halves.
- -2 of the character stated which will hold the The casing 6 has a flat rear end 8 and an outpencil by the same means operating to rotate wardly curved concavo convex forward end the pencil against the sharpening drums for 9 with -a central opening 10 having an outsharpening the pencil. 4 wardly directed flange or neck 11 around the A still further object of the invention wall thereof. A plurality of pencil sharpenresides in the provision of a pencil sharpener ing drums 12 having spiral blades 13 thereon of the character stated having improved penare rotatably mounted in the casing 6 in such cil holding and rotating means co-operating a manner as to diverge forwardly. The rear with a simple arrangement of sharpening ends 14 of the central longitudinal shafts for drums. the drums 13 are rotatable in bearings 15 car- The invention has for a still further object ried by the end wall 8 of the casing 6, while so the provision of a pencil sharpener of the the forward ends 16 of said shafts are excharacter stated which is of improved, simtended through the forward end wall 9 of plified and compact construction, composed the casing 6 and rotatable therein. Pinions of the minimum number of parts and highly 17 are carried on the outer extremities of eflicient in o eration'. the forward shaft ends 16 for meshin en- The invention has for a still further obgagement with and driving by the bevel inject the provision of a pencil sharpener of ternal caring 18 in the inner face of the anthe character stated which may be manufacnular ange 19 of the disc 20. are the pairs of ears 23. Within each pair of cars 23 is pivotally mounted the rear end of one link 2 of a toggle arm, the other link 25 of which is pivotally connected with the forward end of the first mentioned link 2% and has, in turn, its forward end pivotally mounted on an outwardly directed extremity 26 of a lower substantially t -shape clamping member 27. Each outer link 25 is also braced by a bottom brace plate 28 located therebeneath and having its forward end mounted on the pivot member for the forward end of the link 25 while the upwardly offset remaining end of the brace plate 28'is fastened to the under face of the link 25. A con plementary inverted V-shape pencil clamping member 29 is supported above the V-shape pencil clamping member 27, with its outwardly directed extremities 3O riding on the upstanding posts 31 and 82 carried by the said outwardly directed extremities 26 of the clamping member 27 and on which upstanding posts 31 and 32 are mounted the outer links 25 of the toggle arms, as previously mentioned. The upstanding post 32- has upper extremity 3i turned at an angle to support thereon the locking cam 3% aving a radially extended handle 35, so that the earn 3% may be readily turned on the upper extremity 33 of the upstanding post to operate on the upper face of the outwardly directed extremity of the pencil clamping member 29 through which the upstanding post 32 is engaged. To counteract the effect of the cam 34 and resiliently retain the ashape pencil clamping member 29, in its uppermost position, the expansion spring 36 is provided around the upstanding post between the outwardly directed extremities 26 and 30 of the pencil clamping members 27 and 29, respectively. It is tnus apparent that the pencil clamping members 27 and 29 will be caused to thoroughly co-operate in firmly clamping therebetween the pencil 3'? to b sharpened, with the end 38 thereof engaged between the pencil sharpening drums 13, during operation of the pencil sharpener so that the pencil end 38 may be thoroughly sharp ened and pointed by the pencil sharpening drums 13.
As the construction of the device has thus been described in detail, brief reference is now had to its use and modus operandi: To sharpen a pencil with this pencil sharpener, it is simply necessary to adjust the pencil 37 through the space between the pencil clamping members 27 and 29 and through the collar 21 to bring the end of the pencil into engagement with the co-operating pencil sharpening drums 13. Then close the pencil clamping members 27 and 29 firmly upon the pencil 37 by proper adjustment of the cam 34:. The device is then ready for operation by turning or rotating the pencil 37 and forcing lightly inwardly on the same,
with the casing 6 held stationary by one hand or by securing the casing 6 on a stationary support. The toggle arm connections between the pencil clamping members 27 and 29 and the disc 20 permit a constant inward movement of the pencil 37 as the same is rotated and which rotation also compels an opposite rotation of the pencil sharpening drums 13, through the medium of the internal gear 18 and the pinions 17. Thus, the end 38 of the pencil 37 is evenly operated upon to quickly and efficiently sharpen the point thereof.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a pencil sharpener is provided that will fulfill all the necessary requirements of such a device but as many changes could be made in the above description and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention may be constructed within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matters contained in the said accompanying specification and drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i 1. A pencil sharpener including a pair of rotatable pencil sharpening members; pencil operated rotating means for rotating said members; and pencil clamping means carried by the said pencil operated rotating means.
2. A pencil sharpener including sharpening members; a pencil operated rotating means for rotating said members; a clamping means for a pencil; and toggle connections between said clamping means and the paid rotating means for the sharpening memers.
3. A pencil sharpener including diverging pencil sharpening members; pencil operated rotating means for rotating said members; pencil clamping means; and toggle connections between said pencil clamping means and the said pencil operated rotating means for the pencil sharpening members.
4. A pencil sharpener including a casing; pencil sharpening means operable within said casing; pencil operated rotating means for rotating said pencil sharpening means; pencil clamping means; and connections between said pencil clamping means and the said pencil operated rotating means.
5. A pencil sharpener including a casing; pencil sharpening members operable within sa1d caslng; pencil operated rotating means for rotating said members; co-operating pencil clamping members; means to retain said pencil clamping members in operative engagement with a pencil positioned therebetween; and toggle-like connections between said pencil clamping members and the said pencil operated rotating means to cause operation of the latter and allow feeding of the pencil end to the said pencil sharpening members as the pencil is rotated and pressed inwardly.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
