VALVE SPRING COMPRESSOR Filed NOV. 9, 1951 Patented May 17, 1932 UNITED STATES PAT-ENT or-FICE NORRIS F. MCNAUGHT AND' EDWARD H. PETERSON, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOBS TO DURO METAL PRODUCTS COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS VALVE SPRING coMPlnEssoR Application led November 9, 1931. `Sieria1 No. 573,818. I
Our invention relates to a valve spring compressor and is particularly concerned with the provision of an improved device which will compress a valve spring and hold it under compression during the application and/or removal of the pin or key which normally holds the movable abutment of the spring in position.
The present invention provides a. device of the class mentioned which, although sturdily constructed, is light and compact, which comprises a minimum of parts, and which for its operation requires but. very little effort on the part of the operator.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating` a preferred embodiment of our invention,
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the device as it appears when holding a valve spring under compression;
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the device with its aws in the open position;
Fig. 3 is an elevational edge view of t-he device with the operating lever and jawsin the positions of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a top plan View of the device.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings reference numeral 6 indicates a portion of a removable engine head provided with a valve seat 7, poppet valve 8, valve stem guide 9, valve spring 10, valve spring abutment washer 11 and a washer retaining pin 12,l pin 12 extending through a transverse opening in the lower end (in the view shown upper end) of the valve stem. The device of the present inven tion facilitates the ready removal and insertion of the pin 12 and enables the spring 10 to be relieved from compression, and the pin 12 removed, without permitting any possibility for the spring 10 or its abutment Washer 11 being thrown away from the engine block, as frequently occurs when valve springs are unrestrained when relieved of compression.
The device of our invention comprises an L shaped bar, preferably of round stock, comprising arms 14 and 15, the arm 15 having an end 16 oset in a line parallel with arm 14.
Mounted on the arm 14 is a movable jaw member in the form of a casting 17 provided at lone endwithfspaced arms 18, 18 having circular openings adapted Jfreely to receive the arm 14 of the L shaped bar. The Yother end of the casting 17 is bifurcated as indicatedfat 19,-.-.the underside of the bifurcation 19 being rabbeted at 20y tor the reception of thev valve springabutment'washer 11 to whichwe pre-V viouslyhave'alluded. j Y f At 21 we have shown the powerarm of an operating lever which is bifurcatedto provide-' work arms 22, 22, the arms 22, 22 embracing the portion 14 of theL shaped bar andbeing pivoted thereto by. pin 23. The arms 22, 2203i the operating lever are pivotally connected to the adjacent ends of parallel links 24, 24 byrivets 25, 25, theother ends ot such linkslbeing pivotedl to the casting 17 bya pi vot.pi1r26. The arrangement is such thatv when the operating lever is in the position shown in 1, the axis represented by the pivot rivets-25, 25 lies to the left of a straightline drawn between the axes of the pivot pins `23 and 26. l Therefore, the arms 22, 22, links-24, 24 and their several pivots, constitute aflocking togglevwhichl tends to hold all of the parts, in thepostions shown in Fig. ,1, against pressure of a` valve spring tendingrto moveapart the jaws of the device,
i. e. the casting bifurcation 19 and vthe por-v preventthebifurcated portion 19 of the casting 17` from beingrotated out of yalignment with the .portion 16 ot the L shaped bar.
, In employing a device 'of .our'inventi-on to remove the valve shown in Fig. 1, the .operating lever is `moved to the position of Figs. v2 and `3, thebifurcated portion 19 ofthe; casting v17 being applied to the.- valve spring washer'lwith the latter received in the rabbetA 20 of the bifurcated portion," yAt the same time, the jaw portion 16 of the-L shaped bar is applied to the exposed portion ofthe valve head.
r1`he operating lever now is swung away from the L shaped bar, causing the several parts to be. moved to and locked in the posigreater than normal compression, with the 2 c Y i 1,858,372
result that the pin 12 readily may be removed. The valve spring thereupon gradually may be relieved from compression by.
moving the operating lever from the position of Fig. 1 to the position of Figs. 2 and 3.
fhen this has occurred the valve, its spring,
and the abutment washer of the latter may be removed for extension, replacement and Vreair.
p In view of the foregoing description, vit
will be obvious to those skilled in the art how i the device of our invention may be utilized when replacing the valve,its spriiig,"spring y abutment washer andretaining pin in operative relation upon the engine.
Having :thus illustrated and `described Vour invention, what we claim isfnew and desirek to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is: if p 1. A device of the class described comprising a substantially L shaped member having its base arm offset ina line parallel to its otherarm, a movable jaw member provided at one end with spaced arms receiving and adapted to reciprocate upon the last mentioned arm of the L shaped member, said movable jaw member having a bifurcat ed end disposed in alignment with the aforesaid ofl'set portion of the L shaped bar, said bifurcated end-being rabbeted onthe sur-face thereof opposed to the said offset portion, a lever pivoted to the L shaped member between the aforesaid spaced arms ofthe movable jaw member, and a link pivotally connecting said lever with the movable jawl member, said lever and link 'and their several pivots constituting a locking toggle,s ubstan' tially as andvfor the purpose set forth.
2. A device aof the class described comprisV ing a frame bar provided at one end with means for engaging a valve head, a jaw member having a bifurcated end in alignment with and movable toward'and away from the valve engaging means'of the frame bar, fsaid jaw member having-'a pairr of spaced arms slidablypmounted on theframe bar a lever pivoted tothe frame bar betweenthe aforesaid spaced arms ofthe jaw member, and a link pivotally connecting said lever and 'said jaw member, said lever and 'link' and their several pivots constituting a locking toggle, substantially as and for the-purpose set forth.
Y In witness whereof, we hereunto subscribe our namesthis 5th day of November,I 1931.
