Description
May 17, 1932- M. A. ROLLMAN' JAR COVER Filed March 22, 1930 if M I Patented May .17, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE m'rcnhnn A. ROLLMAN, or MoUN'r JOY, PENNSYLVANIA JAR COVER Application filed March-2231930. Serial' No. 438,166.
In jar covers of the screw type, the cover frequently becomes stuck and is therefore diflicult to unscrew, even tho the cover be provided with a roughened or milled edge 6 for the purpose of increasing the gripping power of the hand. My invention is intended to providethe screw-cap with a simple device whereby it may be, with the assistance of a'convenient tool, quickly loosened, so that 10 it may be r'eadily unscrewed by hand, as more of the usual construction which is threaded for, screwing 'onto the usual upstanding threaded nipple of the jar. At its lower edge the cap 10 is provided with an outwardly-extending flange 11 which is provided in its edge with a'circumferential series of notches which form laterally-facing fiat-faced abutments '12.
The jar isprovided with the usual bail-13 whose depending arms are laterally bent, in
the usual manner, for journalling in the usual clips 14 fastened-to the top of the jar,
at points close to the serrated edge of the flange 11. y
To start a tightly-stuck ca it is simply necessary to place the end 0 a convenient tool (a screw-driver 15 bein shown in Fig. 2) in one of the notches ad acent the hearing 14,the' tool being so positioned as to bear against the adjacent upstandingmember of the bail; then, by holding the tool in that osition with one hand and swin 'ng the bail in a direction to unscrew the cap, a ever age will be obtained which will efiectlvely miscrew the cover. The bail is thusused-as a lever and also as a fulcrum for the tool 15,
which alsomay be operated as, a lever. In- I v handle-end of the tool toward the left,.the
with acircum bearing 14 will act 'as a fulcrum and the tool will thus serve as a lever for starting the unscrewing action. Any convenient device or tool may be employed, such for instance as a screw-driver, as shown, or a nail, a coin, etc. So many diiferent kinds of tools and devices may be employed that it will be unnecessary to provide the purchaser of the jar with a special tool.
It will be obvious that the invention is susco. ceptible of-many modifications. I illustrate five of these in thedetail views. It will be unnecessary to describe these modifications in detail, as they may be readilyunderstood by an inspection of the drawings. It will 66 be understood also that my device may be used for tightening the cap by placing the tool on the other side of the bail, and operating the bail in the oppositedirection.
.What I claim as new ist 1. A jar having a threaded nipple and alever having its end pivoted to the top of the jar at one side of the nipple, and a screw closure-cap for said nipple, this cap being provided at its lower edge with an outwardly-projecting flange serrated at its edge to provide laterally-facing flat-faced abut ments, for the purpose set forth.
. 2. A jar having a threaded ni ple and a threaded closure-cap adapted to screwed .0
onto said -nipfple, said. cap being provided.
erenti'al series of abutments on its exterior each having at least one flat face,
the top of said jar adjacent said series of abutments being provided with an.upstandll ing member adapted to afford a fulcrum for an unscrewing tool, as set forth. In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
' 0 MICHAEL A. ROLLMAN.
