While l have herein for convenience and clearness of description referred to my invention as a wheel puller, l desire it to be clearly understood that l am aware that the invention has other equivalent applicati-ons, such as the pulling of gears, bushings, ete., and l intend that all snch equivalent uses shall be considered as coming within the scope of the invention as ydefined herein.

The adaptor 'isiinternally threaded` to engage member has a relatively large opening in its front end for receiving the adaptor, whereby the elements 16 can engage therewith for the pulling operation. The adaptor is preferably of a contractible nature whereby coacting cam faces, hereinafter described, will cause a rm binding thereof onto the hub during pulling of a wheel. Vhen the wheel has been pulled, the adaptor may be instantly released from the elements 16 and I have mounted the sleeve 20 to slide in a manner to perform this function, all of which will now be more specifically described.
The member 14 is a hollow, shell-like body open at its front end for receiving the adaptor 10 and the sleeve 2O is mounted for a limited sliding movement in bore through the rear wall of this body. The sleeve projects into the chamber 24 of the member 14 and the elements 16 are supported thereon. l have illustrated the device as having sin of these elements, all of which are identical and provided with segmental base portions 26 formed to fit the sleeve. Extending forwardly from each such portion is an intermediate portion which terminates in a segmental forward portion 28 for engaging the adaptor within and the member 14 without. The adaptor 10 is internally threaded to engage a wheel hub 22, is preferably split at 3() to render it contractible, and is provided with a shoulder 32 on its periphery. rifhe forward portions 28 of the elements 16 are provided with internal shoulders 34 for engaging the shoulder 32 and also "f with external beveled faces 36 for coacting with a like face 38 on the member 14 whereby to cause contraction of the adaptor upon relative rearward movement ofthe member 14.
The sleeve 2O has a rear portion 40 fitting within the bore of member 14, an intermediate shouldered portion 42, and a forwardlyextending portion 44. The base portion 26 of each element 16 has forward and rearward segmental projections 46 and 48 which seat against the sleeve 20, avspring coil 50 surrounding all the portions 26 between these projections and serving to hold the projections in contact with the sleeve. The projections 46 rest on the sleeve portion 44 and a compression spring 52 between these projections and the shouldered sleeve portion 42 normally urges the elements forwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1. The projection 48 is V-shaped in cross section and the rear shoulder of the portion 42 is inclined to cooperate therewith for a purpose hereinafter described.
The parts of the puller member 12 are shown in their normal relation in Fig. 1, in which relation the sleeve 2O is in its rearmost position and the spring 52 is acting to force the elements 16 forwardly into contact with the member 14 and, in cooperation with the coaeting cam faces 36 and 38, is resiliently i holding the ends 28 in their innermost radial position. The adaptor 10 having been threaded to proper position on the hub 22, the puller member is applied thereto merely by forcing the same over the adaptor, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The engaging of the ends 28 with the adaptor forces the elements 16 rearwardly and along the cam faces 38. Vihen the shoulder 32 passes the shoulders 34, the elements snap into engagement with the adaptor, as shown in Fig. 3, the shoulders 32 and 34 being thereafter resiliently held in engagement, as will be understood. The operator now rotates the screw 18 by means of its handle 54, whereupon the inner end of the screw contacts with the end 56 of the axle and forces the member 14 rearwardly. The cam faces 36-38 thereupon cause the adaptor 10 to contract into gripping engagement with the hub and the wheel to be withdrawn.
l/Vhen the wheel has been withdrawn to a sufficiently loose position, the adaptor is released from the puller merely by backing off the screw 18 and pushing the screw and sleeve inwardly. The effect of this inward movement of the sleeve is shown in Fig. 4, wherein the spring 52 has been compressed and the projections 48 have dropped from the portion 42 of the sleeve onto the relatively lower portion 40 thereof.v This action has thrown the adaptor-engaging ends 28 of the elements 16 radially outward out of engagement with the adaptor, which is thereupon free to pass outward of the puller member. The puller is also loclred in this open position and cannot be again used until placed in the closed position. To again place the puller in this closed and operative position, it is only necessary to pull the screw outwardly, whereupon the V shape of the projections 48 causes them to i be forced radially outward onto the larger portion 42 of the sleeve. rhe spring 52 thereupon immediately forces the sleeve to its rear-most position and the parts assume the operative position of Fig. 1, wherein the holder is again ready for use.
It will, therefore, be seen that 1 have produced a new and improved pulling instrument which can be instantly attached to and removed from a cooperating adaptor in a manner rendering the instrument of particular advantage in the ease and speed of its operation.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A wheel puller comprising an adaptor for engaging the hub of a wheel, a body member having an opening at its front end for receiving the adaptor thereinto, means within the body member' for engaging the adaptor and preventing its return outwai-CL movement, means including resilient means and coacting cam faces for urging the first-named means into engagement with the adaptor, means carried by the body member for engaging an axle on which the engaged wheel is mounted and for forcing the member outwardly therefrom, and cooperating means whereby the first-named means can be released from the adaptor to permit removal of the adaptor from said opening.

5. fr wheel puller comprising a hollow body member, a plurality of segmental clements therein, a contractible collet having intei-nal tireads for engaging the hub of a wheel and adapted to be received within `the forward portions of said elements, and means carried by the body member for engaging an axle on which the engaged wheel is mounted and for forcing the member outwardly there-- from, said forward portions and the corresponding portions of the collet and body member' having interengaging faces includ- 1 ing beveled surfaces for causing 'contraction of the collet onto the hub and withdrawing of the wheel-from the axle upon said outward movement of the body member.

A wheel puller comprising a hollow body member, a plurali-ty of segmental elements therein, a contractible collet having intornai threads for enga ing `the hub of a wheel and adapted to be received within the forward portions of said elements, means mounting the elements for pivotal movement into-and out of engagement with the collet, and means carried by the body member for engaging an axle on which the engaged wheel is mounted and for forcing the member outwardly therefrom, said forward portions and the corresponding portions of the collet and body member having inter-engaging faces including beveled surfaces for causing contraction of the collet onto the hub and withdrawing of the wheel from the axle upon said outward movement of the body member.
T. fr wheel puller comprising a hollow body member, a plurality of segmental elements t ierein, a contractible collet member haring internal threads for engaging the hub of a wheel and adapted to be received within the forward portions of said elements, and means carried by the body member for engaging an axle on which the engaged, wheel is mounted and for forcing the memberoutwardly therefrom, said forward portions being constructed to have a cam-like engagement with one of said membersv and a positive shouldered engagement with the other member for causing contraction of the collet member onto the hub and withdrawing of the wheel from the axle upon said outward movement of the" body-member.

A wheel puller comprising a hollow body member, a plurality of segmental elements therein, the forward exterior edge portions of the elements and the corresponding internal wall of the body member having cooperating beveled faces adapted to cause contraction of the elements upon relative forward movement thereof, a contactible collet having internal threads for engaging' the hub of a wheel, the' segmental elements and collet having cooperating shoulders whereby the former may engage and prevent outward movement of the latter', and means carried-by the body member forengaging an axle on which the engaged wheel is mounted and for forcing'themember outwardly whereby to contract the collet onto the hub and withdraw the wheel from the axle.
9. A wheel puller comprising a hol-low body member, a plurality of segmental elements therein, a contractible collet member having internal threads' for engaging the hub of a ywheel and adapted to be receive-d within the forward portions of said elements, a
power screw carried by the body member for engaging an axle on which the engaged wheel is mounted and for forcing the body member outwardly therefrom, said forward portions being constructed to have a positive l shouldered engagement with one of said 'members and a beveled surface engagement with the other member for causing contraction of the collet member onto the hub and withdrawing of the wheel from the axle upon said outward movement of the body member,
' and means carried by the body member for supporting the segmental elements and permitting a limited forward and rearward movement thereof axially of the screw.

A wheel puller comprising a hollow H body member, a plurality of segmental eleshouldered engagement with one of said members and a bevel-ed surface engagement with the other member for causing contraction of the collet onto the hub and withdrawing of the wheel from the axle upon said outward movement of the body member, means carried by the body member for supporting the segmental elements and permitting a limited forward and rearward movement thereof axially of the screw, and means for holding the said forward portions of the elements in a relatively spread relation when the elements are in a rearward position.

A wheel puller comprising a hollow body member, a plurality of segmental elements therein, a contractible collet member having internal threads for engaging the hub of a wheel and adapted to be received within the forward portions of said elements, a power screw carried by the body member for i engaging an axle on which the engaged wheel is mounted and for forcing the body member outwardly therefrom, said forward portions being constructed to have a positive shouldered engagement with one of said members and a beveled surface engagement with the other member for causing contraction of the collet onto the hub and withdrawing of the wheel from the axle upon said outward movement of the body member, means carried by the body member for supporting the segmental elements and permitting a limited forward and rearward movement thereof axially of the screw, means for holding the said forward portions of the elements in a relativ-ely spread relation when the elements are in a rearward position, and means normally forcing the elements forwardly into contact with the body member when said elements are forwardly of said rearward position. 1

A wheel puller comprising a hollow body member, a sleeve slidably mounted therein, a plurality of segmental elements supported on the sleeve within the member, a contractible collect having internal threads for engaging the hub of a wheel and adapted to be received within the forward portions of said elements, means extending through the sleeve for engaging an axle on which the engaged wheel is mounted and for forcing the member outwardly therefrom, said forward portions and the corresponding portions of the collet and body member having inter-engaging faces including beveled surfaces for cau-sing contraction of the collet onto the hub and withdrawing of the wheel from the axle upon said outward movement of the body member, and means whereby the said forward portions of the elements are brought to a relatively spread relation when the sleeve is moved to a predetermined position.

A wheel puller comprising a hollow body member, a sleeve slidably mounted therein, a plurality of segmental elements supported on the sleeve withinl the member, resilient means holding the elements in contact with the sleeve, a contractible collet having internal threads for engaging the hub of a wheel and adapted to be received within the forward portions of said elements, means extending through the sleeve for engaging an axle on which the engaged wheel is mounted and for forcing the member outwardly therefrom, said forward portions an'd the corresponding` portions of the collet and body member having inter-engaging faces including beveled surfaces for causing contraction of the collet onto the hub and withdrawing of the wheel vfrom the axle upon said outward movement of the body member, said resilient means being adapted to bring the said forward portions of the elements to a relatively spread relation when the sleeve is moved to a predetermined position, and resilient means for forcing the elements forwardly into contact with the body member when the sleeve is moved to another position.

A wheel puller comprising a hollow body member, a sleeve slidably mounted therein, a plurality of segmental elements supported on the sleeve within the member, the forward exterior edge portions of the elements and the corresponding internal wall of the body member having cooperating bevel-ed faces adapted to cause contraction of the elements upon relative forward movement thereof, a contractible collet having internal threads for engaging the hub of a wheel, the segmental elements and collet having cooperating shoulders whereby the former may engage and prevent outward movement of the latter, means for bringing the said forward portions of the elements to a relatively spread relation when the sleeve is moved to a predetermined position and for drawing said portions into a relatively contracted relation when the sleeve is moved to another position, resilient means Jfor forcing the elements forwardly into Contact with the body member when the sleeve is moved to the last-named position, and means extending through the sleeve for engaging an axle on which the engaged wheel is mounted and for forcing the member outwardly therefrom.
