UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAURA E. MONTGOMERY BURR, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT -IN SKETCHlNG-ALBUMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,818, dated January 2, 1877 application filed September 14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, LAURA E. MONTGOM- ERY BURR, of the city of Lansing, in Ingham county, in the State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Apparatus to Facilitate Outline and Perspective Drawing, and for Copying Pictures; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents this apparatus when closed and in its portable shape, in which it resembles a book having either a muslin or leather binding. Fig. 2' is a perspective view of the same, a b c (I being plates of ground glass:
' a and b are attached like the leaves of a book, and have theinroughened sides toward the left hand. 0 and d adhere firmly to the inner surfaces of the covers. E is a plate of stained glass, of golden-brown color, firmly held by the metallic clampf, Fig. 3, to which the double hinge g is so attached as to enable the glass E to swing either horizontally or vertically upon the left-hand cover, to which it is attached by the clamp h, which clasps the The lower margins of these plates are precisely parallel, so that when resting on a level surface each plate stands erect and firm.
The method of using this apparatus consists in tracing the outline of the objects to be drawn, as seen reflected from the plate E upon one of the plates at c d, it being properly adjusted behind the glass E, and using either black or white crayon.
. Both the apparatus and head must remain immovable during the brief operation of taking anoutline sketch. The true position of the objects drawn will be found on the reverse side of the glass, and may readily be copied onto canvass or paper.
As the scale of the picture depends upon the distance between the glass E and the ground-glass surface, a separate and larger plate of ground glass, placed upon an easel in range with the glass E, may be used when a larger outline is desired.
I am aware that the principle of my invention,'as a means of facilitating the copying of objects from nature by unskillful persons, as illustrated, for instance, in the simplest form of the camera lucida, is already known, and such I do not claim as my invention, which consists, mainly, in special construction and the embodiment of the operative elements in book form.
What I claim is- 1. The sketching-album, composed essentially of the covers 0 d, the glass reflector E, and the sketching-surfaces a b, combined and arranged in book form, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the sketching-album, constructed as described, the double-hinge attachment g, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
LAURA E. MONTGOMERY BURR.
