My invention relates to an improvement in a sterilizer door and its novelty consists in the adaptation and arrangement of parts as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.
This invention is an improvement on the United States Patent N o. 1,212,372 of John lizer. Such apparent carelessness cannot be open, then the nurse isv frequently injuredv easily overcome as frequently there is a shortage in the hospital of the material which is being sterilized and necessity will make a nurse take a chance on opening a sterilizer before it has had time to lose all of the steam pressure therein after the lsteam has been cut is exposed to hot burning steam or if there is sutlicient pressure to cause the door to' fly bythe heavy door striking her as she is not prepared for the sudden movement of the oor. In the drawings 10 is a sterilizer door which is hinged in the usual manner (not shown herein) to the head portion 11 of sterilizer body 12. The door 10 has an internally threaded portion 17 into which a stud 13 having external threaded portion 14 is adapted to bescrewed and a set screw 15 screwing through an internal threading 16 in the door 10 is adapted to be turned down against the stud 13 so as to securely lock it in a fixed position in the door 10.
Over thevstud 13, is mounted a spaceror washer 18 and an operative member 19 being eXternally threaded at 20 with a left hand thread and at its o posite end it has an inside circular rowl o teeth 21 and an outside' second row of one way teeth 22. 'The stud 13 has a circular shoulder 23 integral therewith and has a slot 24 cut through the stud 13 and terminates at its outer end in a shoulder 25 cut into the ,stud 13 whereby an externally threaded end 26, o'f smaller dimension than the body of stud 13, is formed.
A. disc 27 internally threaded at 28 and having a second disc 29 rigidly secured there to by means of screws 30 in the usual well known manner is adapted to be threaded over lthe left hand threading 2() of the operative member 19 and these two members 27 and 29 are adapted at their outer edges to 'form a ocket 310 in which heads 31 are ada ted to be rotatably retained in the usual well nown manner7 said heads 31 having the usual bar members 32 integral therewith which at their outer ends pass through slots 33 formed by brackets 34 of usual construction on the door 10 and the ends 35 of said bars 32 being adapted to engage under the circular lip -36 of the head 11 all in the usual well known manner. The door l0 has a lug 37 which is adapted to engage a pocket 38 in the disc 29 so that when the discs 29 and 27 are thrown to their outermost position by the operation of the operative memberV 19 the lug 37 will be disengaged from the pocket 38 thereby permitting the rotation of the discs 29 and 27 and the heads 31 ofthe bars 32 sufficiently to throw the bars 32 from their radial to their oblique position.
A ball bearing and cage 39 is mounted over the stud 13 between the shoulder 23 and the interior shoulder 40 of operating member 19 so as to form an easy ball bearing for the operative member 19 to turn on. A col lar 41 having a circular shank 42 and a pair of pin holes 443 therethrough is mounted over the stud 13 and an interconnecting member 44 having cylindrical legs 45 integral therewith and a circular opening 46 and a series of square out teeth 47 integral around the top of the circular head is adapted to be mounted over the stud 13 so that the shank 42 of the collar 41 will pass through the opening 46 and a pin 48 will pass through the holes 43 in the shank 42 whereby the collar 41 is secured over the interior circular opening 46 of the interconnecting member 44 and pin 48 also passes through a hole 49 in rod 50 which is mounted through the cylindrical boring 51 of stud 13. Said rod 50 has a head member 52 which is adapted to be rigidly secured to the inner end of said rod 50 andra handle 53 adapted to `be rigidly secured at 54 to the outer end of said rod 50. Pin 48 also passes through slot 24 of the stud 13 and will travel back and forththerein as the rod 50 moves in and out in the boring 51 of stud 13 whereby said rod 50 carries with it on its said movement back and forth the interconnecting member 44 through the connections as described.
Over the inner end of the rod 56 is mounted a compression spring 55 around which is also mounted a cylindrical spacer 56 adapted to limit the movement of the rod 50 through contact of the head 52 with the spacer, whichv pocket 62 over which a cap 63 is adapted to be secured at 64 in the usual well known manner, said cap 63 havin openings 65 for receiving pressure from tie inside of thc sterilizer 12 and the bellows 57 as 'described ber 44 is rotated with th'e housing 66 and handles 69. The housing 66 also has a circular pocket 71 adapted to receive a compression spring 72 which is held under tension by means of lock nut 7 3 which is internally threaded to engage the externally threaded end of the stud 13. Nut 73 has the usual spa-nner wrench opening 75. The housing 66 has around the inner circular periphery a set of one way teeth 74 adapted to mesh with and operate with the one way teeth 22 of the operative member 19.
The operation of my device is as follows:
When the door 10 of the sterilizer 12 is closed so that the circular rim 76 oflthe door 10 presses tightly against flexible locking rim member 77 embedded in the edge of the head 11 under conditions where there is no pressure in the sterilizer 12, the locking bars 32 can be thrown into lookin enga ement under the lip 36 by turning t e han les 69 in a clockwise direction whereby operative member 19 which is meshed through teeth 21 with teeth 47 of the interconnecting member 44 and the teeth 74 of the housing 66 being in mesh with the teeth 22 of the operative member 19 will be turned in a clockwise direction with the housing 66 and handles 69. The left hand thread 2O of the operative member 19 thereb 1 operates, when so turned as described, the isc members 29 and 27 inwardly carrying the ball and socket portions 31 and 310 inwardly toward the door 10r whereby the outer ends 35 of the bars 32 are tightly locked under the lip. 36 causing a ressure against rim 760 so that rim 76 is urther compressed to a sealed tight pressure Y against the flexible locking rim 77.
In this operation it is to be understood that the interconnecting member 44 through the pocketing of legs 45 in the pockets 70 of the housing 66 will always cause the said interconnecting member 44 to rotate with the housing 66.
This operation and the position of the pockets described is clearly shown in Figure 1.
'When the sterilizer 12 has pressure in it, causlng said pressure to pass through the opening 65 into the pocket 62 it will compress the bellows 57 to the position shown in Figure 2 and the head 52 on the rod 50 will carry the rod 50 against com ression spring 55 to the position shown in ligure 2. At the same time the rod 50 carrying the pin 48 will move said pin through slot 24 to the outer position which carries with it collar 41 and interconnecting member 44 carried between the shoul.

In tliesepositions the-interconnecting member 44 being entirely separated from the operative member 19 as the handles 69 are turned in a counter-clockwise direction, there is no engagement between the teeth 47 and 21, and also teeth 74 of the housing 66, being adapted to ride :ip and slide over teeth 22 when turned in a counter clockwisefdirecv tion, which is made possible through the compression of the housing 66 on the compression spring 72. This will bring the housing 66 y back into position engaging teeth 74' with they teeth 22 on the operative member 19 following each such riding up. The handles 69 and housing 66 can be turned in a clockwise direction with the parts in position as described as the teeth 74 engage teeth 22 in this direction and therebyturn the operative member 19 so a's to further turn towards'the door and the members 29 and 27 effecting a. tighter locking of theclamping bars 32 through the operation of the left hand thread in said disc member 27.
It is thus seen that when there is pressure inside of the door 10 the interconnecting member 44 is thrown out of engagement so that the turning of the handles 69 and housing 66 in a counter clockwise direction has no effect whatsoever on the operative member 19, there being no eiiective connection between the same and therefore the housing 66 and handles 69 may be spun in the counter clockwise direction when there is pressure in the sterilizer without its having any eiect upon the operative member 19 and the locking.
As the pressure in the sterilizer 12 goes down to normal or atmospheric pressure, the bellows 57 will return to its normal position through the releasing of said pressure and also through pressure of compression spring 55, the movement of the bellows 57 being limited by the spacer 56 which prevents the head 52 from moving beyond the point where it contacts with the spacer 56.
The locking bars 32 will be thrown to an oblique position from their radial position by the rotation of the discs 27 and 29 when. have been turned as described to the opening position so that the lug 37 is freed from the pocket 38.
- The rod may be pushed inwardly by i disengaging teeth 47 of the interconnectthe interconnecting member 44 with teeth 21 of the operative member 19 when there is no substantial pressure in sterilizer 12.
1. In asterilizer adoor, a studbolt secured in said door, an operating member mounted over said stud, a housing carrying handles secured over-the outer end of said stud, a'rod's'lidably running through said stud and held in its normal position by a compression spring secured in position over its inner end by a cap secured to said rod, a pressure bellows mounted over said cap and operating said rod, an interconnecting member mounted in said housing and pinned to said rod through a slot in said stud and having longitudinal pins sliding in openings in said housing and rotating therewith and teeth on its inner end adapted to mesh with one set of teeth on the outer end of said operating member and a second set of teeth on the inner end of saidhousing adapted to engage a second set of teeth on the outer ede of the operating member in a clockwise 'rection, clamping bars mounted on said door and operated at their' outer ends by a disc threadably mounted over said operating member, the latter having a left hand thread.
2. In a sterilizer a door, means on said door for securing said door in closed position, means for operating said securing means, interconnecting means between said operative means and said securing meansv moved by pressure on the inside of said door to disconnect the same from said operating means in the untightening direction during said pressure and said operative means a1- ways maintaining in its operating connection inthe tightening direction.
3. In a sterilizer a door, means on said door for securing the same in a closed position, means for operating said securing means comprising a rotatable member mounted over a stud, rigidly secured in said door, and engaging said securing means with a left hand screw, a housing carrying handles having teeth adapted to engage teeth on said operating member clockwise and slip over the same in tlie counter clockwise direction and an interconnecting member separated longitudinally by a rod running through said stud and controlled by the pressure inside of said door and having teeth adapted to engage said operatincr member when there is no pressure inside ofc said door. l 4. ' 15 6. In a sterilizer a door, locking vmeans on said door, operative means for locking said locking means, an interconnecting member for unlocking said locking means and automatic means for disconnecting said interconnecting member only while there is pressure in said sterilizer.
