i v dwm: I
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIcE JOHN P. BEATTY, OF NORWALK, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN HATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,716, dated December 26, 1876 application iiled August 9, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oHN P. BEATTY, of Norwalk, Fairfield county, Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Hats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a hat stitched in the manner I claim, and Fig. 2 is a section ot' a straw hat, showing the position ofthe hat in the sewing-machine, and the location of the stitch.
The object of my invention is to produce a straw or other hat, the sweat-lining of which is crimped around the angle between the brim and the crown-band, and is stitched by a sewing-machine, the stitches passing perpendicularly through the brim, well out of the way ot' the head in wearing.
It has been the desideratum heretofore in sewin g sweat-linings in hats, by hand, or otherwise, to make the seam as near the junction of the brim and crown-band as possible; butv in my invention I crimp the sweat-lining well out upon the brim, and stitch to the brim with a sewing machine, the stitches passing perpendicularly through the brim, entirely outside of the plane of the surface of the crownband.
As my invention is particularly applicable to straw hats, the objection to the appearance of stitches upon the upper side of the brim does not exist, and this construction enables me to use a sewing machine, thereby avoid ing stitches whipped over the edge ot' the sweat-lining, as in hand sewing, and allows me to crimp and stitch in the sweat-lining neatly in one operation.
I am about making an application for a patent for a sewing machine adapted to stitch linings in straw and other hats, according to my present invention.
In the drawings, A represents the brim of a straw hat; B, the crown-band, and C the tip. Within the hat is the sweat-lining S with its edge a crimped over the angle formed by the junction of the brim and crown-band at c, and extending well out upon the brim, while the other edge extends up in the crown of the hat a suitable distance. The edge a ofthe sweat-lining S is stitched to the brim A, by means of stitches s passing perpendicularly through the edge of the sweat-lining S and the brim A. These stitches may be produced by a sewing-machine suitably constructed ior the purpose, such sewing machine being the subject-matter for another application for a patent.
It will be observed that the stitches pass perpendicularly through the brim of the hat in my invention, and may be seen upon the top side some distance from the surface of the crown-band B.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hat, the sweat lining of which is crimped and stitched to the brim by stitches passing perpendicularly through the brim, outside of the plane of the surface ot' the crown-band, substantially as described.
2. The method, substantially as described, of attaching sweat-linings in hats, by crimping said sweat-lining well out upon the brim, and stitching it thereto by means ot' stitches perpendicularly through the brim, outside of the plane of the crown-band.
The above specification of my said invention signed and witnessed at Norwalk, this 8th day of August, A. D. 1876.
