This invention relates toa vise and has for the primary' object, the'provision of a quick and convenient adjusting? means for thejaws of the 4device whereby the jawsl may have' a wide range of adjustment relative to each other for accommodating objects of different sizes or dimensionsand' when adjusted to an object will firmly hold the same against accidental movement. j
Another object of this invention is the provision of means for varying the gripping action of the jaws on an object after being adjusted thereto whereby the liability of the ,Y object slipping within said jaws is obviated and also permits the gripping of objects firmly which objects may be constructed of yieldable material.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features 2U of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the fol- 2'5 lowing description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a vise constructed in accordance with my invention. 3u Figure 2 is a bottom plan view illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is an end view illustrating the operating handle for tensioning the jaws after being adjusted to an object.
Figure 7 is a detail sectional View taken on the line 7 7 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a detail sectional view illustrating an adjusting rod operating in conjunction with the handle for tensioning the jaws when adj usted to an object.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral l indicates an elongated base having formed thereon pairs of ears 2 apertured to receive fasteners for securing the base to afwsupport. The base 1 has formed integral with one lendl thereof a stationary 4jaw .3 adapted to cooperate with ai movable jaw-4 gripping objects. The base 1` hasformf'ed thereinA a chamber 5 opening' outwardly throughthe bottoml of said ybase and one end f and'has` opposite walls thereof grooved yto receive-y ribs 6 formed' on attaching elements or plates 7 that 4form-'an integral part ofthe movable jaw4. 'The' opposing faces of they elements 7 are :provided with grooves to re" ceive ribs 8? formed on anv adjusting element or plate the' forward e'd'ge. of'fwhich is detachably securedto anadjusting rod l0. Theadj-usting rod extends through the movable? jaw as shown in Figure' 3 and has detachably secured tol its outer end a head-I1. sleeve l2 is mounted within they movable jaw slidably receives thez rod 'l0 and forms a seat for one endof a coiledspring 13 mounted uponthe rod while the opposite` end of the spring seatsi against a collar 14 secured tothe rod'. The spring'l normally urges therod lOin one direction.

In operation, the lever 25 is disengaged 1 from the adjusting rod 10 and an object is f placed between the jaws and said jaws adjusted againstthe object. Vith the handle 22 in a full line position as shown in Figure l, the movable jaw will be prevented from moving away from the stationary jaw orthe object gripped between said jaws. The lever 25 is swung downwardly bringing the cam face 28 thereof into engagement with the cam face 29 of the head ll causing an endwise movement of the adjusting rod againstv the tension of the spring 13. As the plate or element 9 is'held against endwise movement with the adjusting rod, the movable jaw is forced toward the stationary jaw to increase the gripping action upon the object. The cam faces 28 and 29 permits the tension of the movable jaw upon the object to be varied as desired. The elements or plates 9 have formed therein grooves 3() to receive theinner ends of set bolts 31 threaded to the base for the purpose of limiting the adjustment of the movable jaw relative to the fixed jaw.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, whaty I claim is: v
1. A vise comprising a base, a fixed Jaw carried by said base, a movable jaw for co-V operation with the fixed jaw for gripping objects of diiferent sizes, a shank onthe movable jaw, spaced elements carried by said shankV and slidably mounted in the base, a plate slidably mounted between said elements, teeth formed on said elements and plate, tension dogs carried by said base for engagement with the teeth, al controlmeans carried by the base for disengaging the dogs from the teeth, a cam shaped element connected to the plate, and a second cam shaped element pivoted to the movable jaw for cooperating with the first named cam shaped element in tensioning the movable j aw against an object after being adjusted thereto.

A vise comprisingV a base, a fixed jaw carried by said base, a' movable jaw cooperating withy the iiXed jaw for gripping objects of different sizes, a shankon the movable aw, spaced elements carried by said shank. and slidably secured to the base, a plate slidably mounted on said elements, teeth on said elements and plate, tensioned dogs Carried by said base for engagement with the teeth, operating means carried by the base to disengage the dogs from the teeth, a rod securedto said plate and extending through the shank and movable jaw, a cam shaped headon'said rod, tension means for said rod, and a slotted lever pivoted to the movable aw and having a cam shaped face to 'engage with the cam shaped head for tensioning the movable jaw against an objectafter being adjuted thereto.
3. A vise comprising a base, a fixed jaw carried by said base, a movable jaw cooperating with the fixed jaw in gripping objects of different sizes andV slidably connected to the base, Vteeth on the movable jaw, tension dogs to engage said teeth, a plate slidable relative toY said base, teeth onv said plate, a dog for engaging the last named teeth and carried by said base,means associated with the movable jaw and the plate for tensioning said movable jaw against an vobject after being adjusted theretojand an operating means journalled to the base for engaging said dogs simultaneously to disengage them from their respective teeth.
