Be it known that I, Fnans E. Bnnesrnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Vises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in Vises for general use, and which are espe cially serviceable for wood and other work ers in constructing patterns, tools and the like, the material of which is of varied sizes, angles and contours requiring frequent insertions in and removal from the vise, as well as many changes in position therein during the process of formation, by which improvements I am enabled to instantly move the vise jaws toward or from each other to accommodate the material, and by which the vise as a whole is rendered adjustable in relation to its support, and may be readily disassembled when desired.
7 In the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a vise embodymg my improvement, Fig. 2, an end elevation, and Fig. 3 is an underside plan of the lockingmechanism which I employ.
In said drawings, the portions marked, 5, indicate a clamping member having shout ders, 6, 7, adapted to be positioned on a bench or otherwise, and secured thereto by the screwbolts, 8. Said clamping member 5 is preferably provided with a socket section, 9, to which is bolted a similar socket section, 10, said sections forming a'socket for retaining a ball-joint, 11, which terminates in a jaw, 12, mounted therein or formed integrally therewith, said ball being provided with an opening in which is mounted a plunger, 1a, yieldingly secured therein by a spring, 15. Said socket sections are secured by screw-bolts, 16, 17, to the latter of which is attached a universally mounted handle, 18, which may be manipulated to loosen said sections to permit the vise as a whole to be placed at an angle in any direction and secured in such position. I also provide the jaw, 20, which is mounted upon a sliding bar, 21, the end of the latter having a screw-threaded opening, 22, therein for the reception of a screw, 23, which may be adjusted by a handle, 24, as usual, said jaw and screw being united preferably by a split retaining plate, 25, secured at the outer end of said jaw, and which plate is seated in a groove, 26, on said screw formed by the flanges, 27. Said bar 21 is slotted longitudinally on its underside, as at, 28, and provided with circular openings or seats, 29, through which said slot runs, the seats being designed to receive the end of plunger 14, In said slot I position a trip-rod, 30, having at its forward end a trigger, 81, its opposite end being connected by a spring, 32, to the end of bar 21, or to a plug, 33, inserted therein, or in any other suitable manner. Said trip-rod 30 is provided with slots, 35, through whichpins, 36, are inserted for re taming said rod and permitting its adjustment. The jaws 12 and 20, as will be understood, may be provided with self adjusting clamps, as, 37,38, which are hung in the faces thereof by suitable catches which permit their movement toaccommodate material of varied lengths.
In operation, my improved vise is assembled and secured in position by the clamping member 5, theball-bearing being arranged to'support the jaws in the position as indicated in F ig. 1,'which is for ordinary work, or at any angle desired, the ball and socket joint being adjusted by the handle 18 as heretofore indicated. en placing the movable jaw 20 in relation to the stationary jaw 12, the sliding bar 21, to which said jaw 20 is attached, is inserted through the stationary jaw by pulling upon the trigger 31, which action, by means of the pins 36 and slots 35, permits 'rod 30 to be moved downwardly against the end of plunger 14, as indicated in Fig. 1, and thus prevent it from becoming locked in any of the seats 29, into which it is adapted to be normally projected by the action of spring 15. WVith the plunger thus depressed there is no obstruc tion to prevent the free movement of bar 21 to the extent required to bring jaw 20 at approximately the required distance from jaw 12, in which position jaw 20 will become looked upon releasing trigger 31, which permits rod 21, through the action of spring 32, and by means of the pins 36 and slots 35, to recede or rise upwardly within the recess formed by the slot 28, so that this operation releases plunger 14 and permits it to project into a seat 29, which is brought thereover by the adjustment of bar 21, and thus fixedly locking said bar in the position to which it has been moved. When jaw 20 is so positioned it may be found that it has been brought slightly nearer to or farther from the material to be worked upon, in which circumstances it may be adjusted to the proper position by manipulating the screw 23 which carries said jaw 20. In this manner I am enabled to readily adjust the jaws in the desired relation by simply operating trigger 31 to permit the sliding and locking of bar 21, and by slightly adjusting the screw 23. Itwill also be readily understood that my improved vise may be disassembled for shipment, or otherwise, as it is but necessary to removethe outer jaw from screw 23, withdraw bar 21, and disconnect socketsections 9, 10, so that the ball joint and jaw12 may be removed therefrom, when all of such elements, including clamping member 5, are separated and may be compactly packaged. r
I claim as my invention:
1. In a vise, a stationary jaw, a sliding bar having slotted plunger seats therein, a
, trip-rod extending longitudinally of said bar and through said seats, means for operatlng sald rod to be raised and lowered through said seats, an adjusting screw in one end of said bar, and a jaw carried by said screw and adapted to be adjusted thereby in relation to said stationary jaw.
2. In a vise, a clamping supporting memher, a stationary jaw mounted in said member, plunger in the lower end of said j aw, a sliding bar in said jaw having locking seats therein for the reception of said plunger, a jaw at the outer end of said bar, and means in said bar for controlling the action of said plunger to permit the locking of said bar in fixed position or the free sliding movement thereof.
3. In a vise, a sliding bar having a series of plunger seats arranged longitudinally i thereof, a plunger adapted to -engage said seats and having slots therein, means in said bar projecting through said slots for a supporting said rod a trigger at one end of said rod for pulling the same in one direction, and yielding means at its opposite end for moving said rod in the opposite direction.
5. In a vise, a stationary jaw, a universal joint for supporting the same, a plunger in said joint, a bar in said jaw having slotted seats therein, means in said seats for permitting engagement or disengagement of said plunger with said bar, an adjusting screw in the end of said bar, a jaw secured to said screw, and means for operating said screw to adjust said jaw.
