Description

May 3, 1932-. F. H. POEPPELMEIER 1,856,725
TYPE FOR AUTOMATIC TYPESETTING MACHINES Filed May 26, 1950 INVENTOR MM? WM, BY
15,5 A TTORNEY Patented May 3, 1932 UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE FRANK H. .POEPPELMEIER, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE SET-O-TYPE COMPANY, 7
OF DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO TYPE FOB AUTOMATIC TYPESETTING MACHINES Application filed May 26, 1930. Serial No. 455,551.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in type for automatic typesetting machines.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide a type having tapered or beveled edges to permit its free entrance to succeeding channels of an automatic type-setting machine such as that disclosed in the United States Patent No. 1,607,170, granted to me November 16th, 1926. A type such as I have provided will prevent clogging atthe entrance to difierent channels, which frequently occurs with square corner type. Increased speed in the passage of the type through the channels is also assured.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved type. Figure 2 is a front side view thereof. And Figure 3 is an edge view of the same.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a detailed description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a cast metal keystone shaped type formed with grooves 2, 2 in its edge portions.
Upon the flat top face 3 of the type a character 4 such as the letter A in Figure 1 is formed.
In order to prevent clogging, and to insure ease and rapidity of movement of the type through the channels of automatic type-setting machines, I have formed the outer faces 5 and 6 of each edge portion of the type so that they lie in a plane whose angle of inclination is substantially 11. This taper or inclination is inwardly from top to bottom on each side of the type, as will be seen from Figures 1 and 2.
'- Although the angle of inclination of the outer faces of each edge portion of the type illustrated and described is approximately 11, it may be made greater or less if desired.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A type for automatic type-setting machines, comprising a key-stone shaped casting formed with oppositely disposed grooves in its two edge portions, the outer faces of said edge portions tapering inwardly, on each side, at the same angle, from top to bottom, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 6 my hand this 23rd day of May, 1930.
FRANK H. POEPPELMEIER.
