This invention relates to new and useful improvements in the construction of sales registering devices and particularly those employing multiple sales sheets.
The principal object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient actuating mechanism for devices of the stated character, wherein the advancement of sales receipts may be accomplished by a single movement of an actuating handle in one direction through a relatively small are.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mechanism for a sales register machine having novel means for automatically disengaging the actuating mechanism from the receipt advancing rolls, to permit the return of the said mechanism to its normal p0- sition for a subsequent operation, and the provision of means for automatically reestablishing the cooperative relation between the actuating mechanism and the receipt advancing rolls when the actuating handle has attained its normal position of rest.
The invention further resides in certain features and details of construction set forth hereinafter and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

It is known that machines of the stated character have been actuated heretofore by movement of an operating handle or lever through a relatively small arc. However, such machines in the past have perforce used intricate clutch mechanisms for disengaging the actuating mechanism from the receipt advancing rolls, to permit the actuating mechanism to return idly to a normal position of rest for subsequent operation.
The present invention involves the use of a mechanism that is adapted to be actuated by the movement of an operating handle through a small are but by the provision of the novel construction hereinafter set forth, I eliminate the necessity for the intricate clutch mechanisms heretofore employed, and produce a sales register machine which is rugged in construction and economically desirable from the standpoint of the cost of manufacture and maintenance.
Referring to the drawings, the device in general comprises a box-like structure consisting of a base 1, side walls 2, 2a, and end walls 3, 3a respectively, which extend upwardly from said base, the end wall 3 forming the front of the machine, being of lesser heightthan the end wall 3a which constitutes the rear wall thereof. The top of the machine is enclosed by a cover plate 4. which,in the present instance, is secured to the side walls 2, 2a of the machine by means of arms 5, 5 and the hand nuts 6, 6 the said cover 4: having a transversely disposed raised housing 7 at the central portion thereof and opening internally of the machine. The cover plate 4 is also provided in the present instance with a rectangular opening 8, disposed forwardly of the housing 7, and a narrow slot 9 disposed rearwardly of the said housing and parallel thereto, the purpose for which will be hereinafter set forth.
A writing platform, in the form of a plate 10 having depending flanges 11 provided with slots 12 therein, is supported by the pins or rods 13 extending inwardly from or transversely between the side wall members 2, the slots 12 engaging the supporting elements 13 in the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The plate 10 in the present instance is positioned below the rectangular opening 8 in the cover 4 and suitably spaced therefrom.
A. roller 17 is mounted on and rigidly secured to a shaft 16 which is rotatably mounted in the side walls 2 of the machine and disposed directly below the open underside of the housing 7 in the cover plate 4. A pair of relatively small pressure rollers 18 are respectively rotatably mounted in yoke-like supports 19 which are respectively secured to cross members or heads 20, the heads 20 in turn being adjustably supported in the housing 7, by means of screws 21, 21 slidably mounted in bearings 22, 22, secured to the wall of the housing 7, the screws 21, 21 being provided with finger nuts 23.
The relatively small rollers 18, 18 in the present instance, normally contact with the peripheral surface of the underlying large roller 17 said contact being of a resilient nature is effected by spring 24, positioned about the screws 21, between the ends of the bearings 22 and the upper sides of the heads 20, the tension of the springs 24 being governed by turning the nuts 23.
The receipts which in the present instance, are in triplicate, in stub formand positioned accordion fashion in one end of the box structure, are shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. These triplicate slips are adapted to pass intermediate the plate 10 and the rectangular opening 8 in the forward cover plate 4 and between the contacting rollers 17 and 18, after which, two copies of the registered sales pass externally of the machine through the slot 9, the other registry ofthe sale passing inwardly of the machine as outlined in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
The triplicate slip 00 is guided transversely by guide plates 14, 14 which project inwardly from the side walls 2, 20; respectively, the slips passing under a transversely extending guide rod 15, as shown in Fig. 3.
The particular feature of this invention resides in the mechanism for intermittently rotating the large roller 17 in but a single direction to advance the registered sales slips o2 successively between the said roller 17 and the pressure rollers 18. The mechanism in the present instance comprises in. particular a segmental arm 26 which is mounted on and rigidly secured to a shaft 25, which is rotatably mounted in the side walls 2, 2a adjacent the lower edges thereof. A lever 28, having a handle 27, is mounted at one end of the shaft 25 externally of the machine for the purpose of rocking the segmental member or arm 26 about the axis of the shaft 25 to operate the machine. A collar 29 abuts the inner face of the side wall 2a'to prevent longitudinal movement of the shaft 25in the casing of the machine. The aforementioned segmental arm 26 is rigidly mounted adjacent the opposite end of the shaft 25, the said segmental arm 26 having an arcuate arm 30 pivotally mounted thereon at 31. The arcuate arm 30 is provided with a'plurality of teeth 32 at the upper edge thereof. The teeth 32 of the arcuate arm 30 are adapted for engagement with the teeth 33 of a pinion 34 which is rigidly mounted on the supporting shaft 16 of the slip advancing roller 17. The teeth 32 of the arm 30 are adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with the teeth 33 of the pinion 34 by a cam 35 which is pivotally mounted on the segmental element 26. One end of the cam element 35 is adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with a notch 36 formed in the lower edge of the arm 30, in order to effect the said engagement and disengagement of the teeth 32 with respect to the teeth 33 of the pinion 34, the said cam 35 being actuated by contact of the opposite end thereof alternately with actuating members 37 and 38 which are mounted at predetermined positions on the inner face of the adjacent side wall 2.
The movement of the segmental arm 26 is limited in the present instance, by the pins 39, 39, which extend inwardly from the said side wall 2. A spring 40 is secured to and at one end of the shaft 25 while the other end of said spring is secured to the side wall 2, as at 41, to effect the return of the segmental arm 26 to its normal position, shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, when the trip 38 engages the one end of the cam 35 and rocks it'about its pivot to cause the opposite end of the cam 35 to ride into the notch 36 in the arcuate arm 30, whereby the teeth 32 of the said arm are disengaged from the teeth 33 of the roller actuating pinion 34. When the segmental arm 26 moves rearwardly under the action of the spring 40 the cam 35 engages the trip 37 and turns about its pivot to move its opposite end out of the notch 36 into the plane under edge of the arm 30, whereby the arm 30 is turned about its pivot and the teeth 32 of said arm are again brought into mesh with the teeth 33 of the roller actuating pinion 34, ready for another advancement of the register slips :0 through the cooperative action of the rollers 17 and 18 respectively.
Heretofore, in using machines of this type, difiiculty has presented itself in a tendency for the rollers to rotate in the-opposite direction through a small are on the return of the segmental arm to the position for a succeeding operation, and by such rotation,'disengage the sales register slips m, from the rollers 17 and 18 respectively, which would require the replacing thereof between the rollers, after each sale had been recorded and before the next setof slips could be advanced.
To prevent the above rotation or jumping baclr of the rollers 17 and 18 respectively, I provide in the present instance a'ratchet 42, rigidly mounted on the shaft 15, and a pawl 43 adapted to engage the ratchet 42 immediately subsequent to the advancement of the sales slips on through the rollers 17 and 18 and by such engagement of the pawl 43 with the ratchet 42, prevent any jump back or return rotation of the rollers, which would release the grip thereof on the aforementioned sales slips 24.
In operating the sales register machine, when a sale is recorded, the original and two duplicate sheets are recorded by writing thereon through the rectangular opening 8 in the cover plate 4, using the inner plate 10-as a support for the pressure of the'writing instrument. To advance the sales slips m through the machine, a forward movement of the handle 27 will rotate the shaft 25, rocking the segmental arm 26 with the cam 35 being positioned therein, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings with the teeth 32 of the arcuate arm 30 in engagement with the teeth 33 of the roller operating pinion 34. The shaft 16 having the roller 17 thereon, is thereby rotated and advances the slips a? between the rollers 17 and 18 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. W hen the segmental arm 26 has moved a predetermined distance, limited by the forward stop 39, the cam actuating element 38 being then in engagement with one end of the cam 35, pivots the said cam until its opposite end enters the notch 36 formed at the under edge of the arcuate arm 30. lVith the cam 35 positioned in the notch 36, the arcuate arm 30 is allowed to drop a distance sufficient to remove the teeth 32 of the said arm 30 from engagement with the teeth 33 of the pinion 34. Upon release of the handle 27, the spring 40, connected to the shaft 25, will return the mechanism, including the segmental arm 26, to its normal position of rest, at which the teeth 32 of the pivotally mounted arcuate arm 30 will be returned to engagement with the teeth 33 of the pinion 34 by the action of the cam 35 contacting with the cam actuating element 37 which turns the cam 35 until its one end is moved out of engagement with the notch 36 and onto the plane under edge of the arcuate arm 30, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, which raises the aforementioned arcuate arm 30 to place the teeth 32 thereof into engagement with the teeth 33 of the pinion 34.
lVhile I have set forth the embodiment of my invention for the purpose of description, it will be apparent that certain changes and modifications may be made in the details thereof without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim: 7
1. The combination of a shaft, a pinion on the shaft, a rock shaft, an arm on said rock shaft, a gear rack carried by and pivotally mounted on said arm a relatively fixed trip element, means pivotally mounted on said arm and operated by contact with said relatively fixed trip for effecting cooperative engagement between said gear rack and the said pinion upon movement of the rock shaft in one direction and a second relatively stationary trip contacting with said means for disengaging the gear rack from the pinion upon movement of the rock shaft in an opposite direction for effecting intermittent rotation of the first said shaft in a single direction.
2. The combination of a shaft, a pinion on the shaft, a rock shaft, an arm on said rock shaft, a gear rack carried by and pivotally mounted on said arm a relatively fixed trip element, means pivotally mounted on said arm and operated by contact with said relatively fixed trip for effecting cooperative engagement between said gear rack and the said pinion upon movement of the rock shaft in one direction, a second relatively stationary trip contacting with said means for disengaging the gear rack from the pinion upon movement of the rock shaft in an opposite direction for effecting intermittent rotation of the first said shaft in a single direction, and means preventing rotation of the first mentioned shaft in the opposite direction.
3. In a device of the type described, a shaft, a roller on said shaft, a pinion on the shaft, a rock shaft, an arm on said rock shaft, a gear rack carried by and pivotally mounted on said arm a relatively fixed trip element, means pivotally mounted on said arm and operated by contact with said relatively fixed trip for effecting cooperative engagement between said gear rack and the said pinion upon movement of the rock shaft in one direction, and a second relatively stationary trip contacting with said means for disengaging the gear rack from the pinion upon movement of the rock shaft in an opposite direction for effecting intermittent rotation of the first said shaft in a single direction.
4:. In a device of the type described, a shaft,
a roller on said shaft, a pinion on the shaft, a rock shaft, an arm on said rock shaft, a gear rack carried by and pivotally mounted on said arm a relatively fixed trip element, means pivotally mounted on said arm and operated by contact with said relatively fixed trip for effecting cooperative engagement between said gear rack and the said pinion upon movement of the rock shaft in one direction, a second relatively stationary trip contacting with said means for disengaging the gear rack from the pinion upon movement of the rock shaft in an opposite direction for effecting intermittent rotation of the first said shaft in a single direction, and means preventing rotation of the first mentioned shaft in the opposite direction.
5. In a machine, an intermittent operating mechanism comprising a pinion, a rocker arm, a gear rack carried by and movable with respect to said arm, means actuating the gear rack into engagement with the pinion, and means mounted on said machine and independent of the operating mechanism for moving said actuating means into and out of engagement with the gear rack.
6. In a machine, an intermittent operating mechanism comprising a pinion, a rocker arm, a gear rack carried by and movable with respect to said arm, pivotal means actuating the gear rack into engagement with the pinion, and fixed means for pivoting said actuating means into and out of engagement with the gear rack.

In a machine, an intermittent operatingomechanismcomprising a pinion, a rocker arm,,a gear rack carried by and movable With, respect to said arm, a trip element, pivotal means on the arm and operated by the trip element eifecting cooperative engagement between said gear rack and the pinion upon movement of the arm in one direction, and a second trip element for disengaging the gear rack from the pinion upon movement of the arm in an opposite direction.
8. In a machine, an intermittent operating mechanism comprising a'pinion, a rocker arm, a gear rack mounted on said arm, and arranged for intermittent cooperative engagement with saidp-inion, means actuating the gear rack into engagement With the pinion, and means independently of the actuating means efiecting disengagement of the gear rack and the pinion.
