This invention is connected with the art of pencils and has relation more particularly to a device especially designed and adapted for use in connection with refillable lead pencils.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the type described which is simple in construction, but positive in action, thus resulting in an economy of manufacture.
A further object is to provide a device, the manufacture of which is simplified by reducing the number of different operations in constructing and assembling the device.
A further object is to provide a device of the type described in which the assembling of the parts is rendered easy. 7
A further object is to provide a device of the type described, the parts of which are particularly adapted to be assembled by the blind.
A further object is to provide a device of the type described having a plunger, either end of which may be slightly misformed or distorted without rendering'the plunger useless.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the following detailed description reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which 7 Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a pencil constructed in accordance with the embodiment of my invention, the several parts of the device being assembled in a position of use.

Referring now to the drawings for a more particular description the numeral 10 indicates the body portion of the pencil which is provided with a longitudinal recess 11 at its top, said recess being adapted to contain auxiliary sticks of writing lead.
A tubular cap 12 is positioned upon the upper end of the pencil and provided with a plurality of tangs 13, the latter facing inwardly toward each other and are thus adapted to grip the cover 1 1 of the recess 11. The cover 14- is adapted to also function as an eraser at desired times. As thus described it will be understood that the cover 14 is firmly seated in a removable manner.
The lower portion of the body 10 is provided with a cylindrical longitudinal recess 15, the upper end of which terminates in a reduced substantially rectangular slot 16, as best shown in Figure 2. Fl
A sleeve 17 is disposed within the recess 15 and is arranged for rotation about its central axis. This sleeve 17 is provided with an internal spiral groove.
A tip 18 formed of any suitable materialis provided for the pencil and, as best shown in Figure 1, is of hollow, conical shape and has a portion adapted to fit over the lower end of the body portion of the pencil and to revolve thereon.
The tip 18 is secured to the sleeve 17 by any suitable means, such as soldering, and it will be understood that a movement imparted to the tip 18 will cause a correspond ing movement of the sleeve.
A stick of graphite or writing lead 19 which normally projects beyond the tip 18, as shown in Figure 1, extends inwardly of the pencil within the sleeve 17.
The lead 19 is adapted to be proj wardly of the pencil by means of a plunger 0 rod 20, an end of which is adapted to engage against the writing lead as shown in Figure 1. The plunger rod 20 comprises a main body portion 21, outwardly of which and near each end thereof the crimped or curved por tions 22 are provided. The terminal end portions 23 of the plunger rod are formed in axial alignment with its body portion 21 The curved portions 22 of the plunger are in a common plane and extend outwardly beyond the alignment of the body portion 21 and the portions 22 and are adapted to register with the internal spiral grooves of the sleeve 17 for purposes later described.
In the use of my improved device the operator inserts the stick of writing lead 19 within the sleeve 17 and as the lead becomes worn, in writing, the remainder of the stick may be extended through the tip 18 by rotating the latter, together with the sleeve 17, or the body 10 may be rotated while the tip 18 is held stationary, thereby causing the rod 20 to move toward the tip 18 and thus forcing the lead outwardly of the pencil.
In the practice of the invention and devices related to this art it is necessary to remove the interior operating parts from the body portion for the purposes of inserting a lead therein. In instances where the user is unfamiliar with the mechanism the reassemblage of the parts is facilitated by reason of the fact that it is immaterial which end 23 of the rod 20 is positioned in register with the lead 19 or the slot 16, tlie latter functioning to prevent rotary movements of the rod while permitting sliding movements thereof as shown in Figure 2.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a pencil constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the simplicity, convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish it to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as claimed.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. A refillable lead pencil comprising a body having longitudinal recesses terminating in a reduced straight slot having a greater dimension in one direction than at right angles thereto, a tip adapted to rotate about the central axis of the body portion, a sleeve rigidly secured to the tip and disposed within the recess having an internal spiral groove, and a rod having straight end portions and crimped portions near each of said ends, each of said crimped portions being a duplicate of the other of the crimped portions, one of said crimped portions engaging the spiral groove as a screw and the other of said crimped portions engaging the slot to pre vent the rotation of the rod relative to said body. 1
2. A refillable lead pencil comprising a bodyhaving a longitudinal recess terminating in a reduced rectangular slot, a tip adapted to rotate about the central axis of the body portion, a sleeve disposed within the recess secured to the tip and having an internal spiral groove, and a rod having straight end portions and essentially similar crimped portions near each of its end portions, one of said crimped portions engaging the spiral groove as a screw, the other of the crimped portions being positioned in the slot.
3. A refillable lead pencil comprising a body having a longitudinal recess terminat ing in a reduced slot having a cross section of greater dimension in one direction than at right angles thereto, a tip adapted to rotate about the central axis of the body portion, a sleeve disposed within the recess and secured to the tip, said sleeve being provided with an internal sniral groove, a rod having straight ends, and two essentially similar ofi'set means carried by the rod, each of said means being intermediate of one of said ends and the central portion of said rod, one of said means engaging the groove as a screw, the other of said means being slidably mounted in said recess to prevent the rotation of said rod relative to said body.
4-. A refillable lead pencil comprising a body portion having alongitudinal recess terminating in a reduced slot having a cross section of greater dimension in one direction than at right angles thereto, a tip adapted to rotate about the central axis of. the body portion, a sleeve disposed within the recess and secured to the tip, said sleeve being provided with an internal spiral groove, and a rod being provided with similar crimped portions near each of its ends, one of said crimped portions being adapted to engage the internal groove as a screw, one of said crimped portions being slidably receivable in the reduced slot.
