C. L. TOPLIFF.
BARBED METALLIC PLATES FOR FENCE-TOPS.
Patented Dec.19, 1876.
INVENTOII WITNESSES TH E GRAPHIC CD-N-Y UNITED STATES PATENT Drrxcn.
CYRUS L. TOPLIFF, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
I MPROVEMENT IN BARBED METALLIC PLATES FOR FENCE-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,593, dated December 19, 1876; application filed November 29, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRUS L. ToPLIFF, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Barbed Plate for Fence-Tops, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a modified form. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the application of the barbed plate to fences.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a barbed plate for attachment to the tops of fences, railings, and other similar places for preventing the encroachment of animals; and it consists of a plate or strip of sheet metal in which triangular barbs or tongues are cut and bent at right angles to the plate.
In the drawing, A is a plate of sheet metal, preferably of iron, which may be of any desired thickness and of suitable width for attachment to the tops of fences and railings. and which are punched or cut by aid of suitable machinery, so as to form a series of triangular tongues or barbs, B, which are bent at right angles to the plate A in the process of punching, forming a series of sharp projecting points. The barbs may be formed with equal advantage by serrating the edges of the plate and turning them up, as shown in Fig. 3. After forming the barbs 0n the the plate it may be galvanized, tinned, or japanned, to protect it from corrosion. The
barbed plate is attached to the tops of fences and railings by means of nails or screws, and, when so attached, effectually prevents the smaller animals from running about on the tops of fences.
The invention is designed, princi 'ially, for use in cities, where the tops of high fences which surround the rear lots form the preferred ground for the nightly visitation of cats, who jump the fences, destroy flowerbeds, shrubs, and plants, and make night hideous with their discordant music.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In combination with the top of a fence or wall, a barbed sheet-metal plate, having two or more rows of barbs formed out of the body of the plate between its edges, projecting in same direction, substantially as shown and described.
0. L. TOPLIFF. Witnesses:
