Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS MCGHAN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
WATER-CLOSET.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,550, dated November 3, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
vBe it known that I, FRANCIS MCCHAN, of V'Vashington city and District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tater-Closets; and I' do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a section on w, taken through axis of spindle s.
Similar characters of reference in the several iigures denote the same part.
My invention has reference to the manner of regulating the flow of water to the pan, after it has been used.
In the drawing A is the pan and B the,
pipe conveying the water thereto, and in communication with a chamber C', as shown in Fig. 2. This chamber receives the supply of water through opening a, closed by a valve b. This valve rests upon the mouth of the opening, and is there held by an india rubber diaphragm C to which it is attached said diaphragm constituting the top chamber C. The wall of the chamber C is perforated and connected with the main pipe D by a small pipe CZ as shown in Fig. 2. The pipe el has a stop cock 7c by which the size of water passage may be regulated.
Through the roof E of chamber C runs a spindle s, secured at bottom to an elastic diaphragm f stretched across the chamber above the mouth of pipe d.
The action of this construction is as follows Chamber C being in communication with the supply pipe, by pipe d, will fill with water above valve b; and as the upper surface of the valve is greater than the area of opening a, the valve will rest close to its seat, and no water be permitted to pass to pipe B. Pressure downward upon spindle s will force water through pipe d into pipe D against the head of water. And on the removal of this pressure, the head of water through pipe D will lift valve Z) and water iiow to the pan A. This flow of water will continue, until suflicient water passes through pipe Z to lill the displacement in chamber C, and close valve Z). This time will depend on the size of opening regulated by the stop cock 7c. The shaft s rises above the side of the box and is forced down by the weight of the person occupying the seat I. A spring m lifts this shaft when the occupant of the seat rises. In practice therefore, the length of time the water is to run is regulated by the stop cock 7c. The manner of closing the valve b may. with suitable modifications, be adapted to wash stands, bath tubs, and other analogous uses.
Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The adjustable communication Z 7c between the supply pipe D and the chamber C above the valve b, in combination with the displacing diaphragm f or its equivalent, arranged and operating substantially asset forth. 4
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCIS MCGHAN.
