Description

April'19, 1932. P. A. HENTSCHEL DEFLECTOR FOR GAS STOVES AND THE LIKE Filed Feb. 24, 1931 D. jnv eni'pr faul A.Jienl3)0hel,
Patented Apr. 19, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT oFF IcE.
PAUL A. HEN TSCHEL, F BALTIMORE, MARYLAN D DEFLEGTOR FOR GAS STOVES AND THE LIKE Application filed February 24, 1931. Serial no. 517;9 38'. t
The invention relates to deflectors for gas stoves to direct the smoke and noxious proclucts so as to dissipate them in substantial measure instead of allowing them to collect on the wall or precipitate upon the top of the oven.
The invention consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the applicance taken in a plane from front to rear thereof.
r Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device. Fig. 4 is a view of a detail. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan View similar to Fig. 3, showing a modified form.
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view showing the modified form of Fig. 5.
In these drawings, 1 indicates the chimney portion of the appliance which is adapted to 2 be supported on the rim surrounding the outlet from the oven. This chimney member is of substantially elliptical form in cross section. At its upper end is the hood or deflector member 2, which consists of back and side walls 2a, 2b suitably attached to the'chimney portion and an overhanging upper portion 3 to arrest the upward flow of the fumes and direct them forwardly and downwardly away from the wall adjacent which the gas stove may be located. The upper wall of the hood is substantially horizontal and ordinarily there is a tendency for the heavier particles of the fumes on striking this upper horizontal portion of the hood to be precipitated in a downward direction along the front Wall of the chimney and finally collect upon the top of the oven.
In order to prevent this I provide a guard or supplementary deflector at the lower part of the hood and at the front thereof as shown at 4. This deflector is in the form of a suitable plate extending from side wallto side wall 2?), 2b of the hood and secured thereto in any suitable manner asbyspot welding.
This guard inclines downwardly and out-- ward ly and its effect is to direct any particles precipitating from the fumes after striking the upper part of the hood. outwardly so" that the fumes will be dissipated into the air instead of falling directly downward a along the front of thechimney n'dfcollect ing on the top plate of the oven. I
This guard lies adjacent the upper edge of the chimney portion of the appliance and inclines downwardly and forvvardlyin respect" to the front wall of the chimneyi I h'eguard is formed of sheet metal with itsl'ower edge turned downwardly and inwardly to provide a rounded edge. The main part of the'guard m is slightly concavedor dished so that any'f particles striking thereon will bebetter di-" rected forwardly and away from the ap plianc'e.
The hood may be built of a single piece'so far as its back, top and sides are con"cerned and its inclined front 20 may be in a separate piece bolted to inturned flanges of the-side's.
I provide an asbestossheet or pad at 5' to? line the backwall and top wall of the hood, this sheet being hel'd'bytongues 6 struck up" from the back wall, and tongues! extending from the top wall rearwardly. The front panel 20 which carries the louvres 8 is formed as a separate piece and has inturned flanges 9. the lateral onesof which seat'in-d'epression's in the inturned flanges-extending from the side wallsofthehood. This panel is secured inplace to these fianges'by the'screw bolts 10:
As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, in stead ofu'sin-g. the guard formed from a separate piece at tached to the sidewalls of the 'hoodi I may form the guard integral'with the wall of the chimney as shown at 4a. This will serve to strengthen the wall of the chimney against deformation. This guard 4a will extend from one side face of the chimney to the other, or in other words, it will extend from one side wall 2?; of the hood to the other side wall thereof.
' I claim 1. A deflector for the fumes from gas stoves comprising a hood having a discharge opening to direct the fumes, and a guard extending across said discharge opening at new the lower part thereof inclining downwardly and outwardly, substantially as described.
2. A deflector according to claim 1 in which the hood is composed ofback and side walls 5 with a horizontal top and downwardly ing clined front wall, with the said guard extending between the lower parts of the side walls and spaced apart from the lower edge of the inclined front wall.
3. A deflector according to claim 1 in which the hood is composed of back and side walls" surmounted by a horizontal top and. an in- I clined front wall, the sai'dguard being a separately formed piece attached to the said side I g 15 walls.
4. A deflector for the purpose described comprising a chimney portion, a hood portion formed as a separate piece and attached" to the upper partof the chimney portion and 0 .aguard extending from side to'side of the hood, and in front of the upper end'of the chimney, said guard extending downwardly and outwardly, substantially as described;
5.. A deflector for gasstoves and the like comprising a chimney having a hood .at the upper end thereof reaching oversaid chimney and-extending beyondthe front thereof with a downwardly and outwardly inclining front wall, and a guard inclining downwardly and -outwardly and lying between the sides of the j hood and in front. of the upper end of the chimney, substantially as described. s v 6. A deflector for gas stoves and the like comprising a hoodhaving side, back and top fivalls, with flanges-turned inwardly'from the side walls and inclining downwardly and. forwardly, and a louvre plate attached to said flanges, the inturned flanges of the side walls having depressions intermediate their length,
the louvre plate having flanges restingin said a de ressions, substantially as described.
. A deflector for gas stoves comprising a chimney, a hood surmounting said chimney, and a guard integral with the upper edge of Bthe front wall of the chimney and extending from side to side of saidchimney, the said integral guard being bentdownwardly and forwardly at aninclination from the upper edge ofthe chimney walls, substantially as 6Q3described. v a In testimonywhereof, I aflix my signature.
