H. C. COLE SPRYING MACHINE 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Nov. ll, 1931 Patented Apr. 19,; 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HARRY C. COLE, F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA SPRAYING MACHINE l Application filed November 11, 1931. Serial No. 574,309.
The principal objects of the present invention are to spray any quantity of liquid or fluid of any kind'and to control the quantity sprayed even to arresting and restarting the spray, to do this automatically in response to the speed of the machine which feeds the web, sheet or the like which is to be sprayed, and to avoid the use of oriicesl or the'like for controlling the flow of the liquid or fluid that is sprayed by air jets. Other objects of the invention will appear from'the following description. y
Generally stated, the invention comprises an inclined sluice at the lower end of which fluid orv liquid is continuously discharged, a revolving roller having its curved surface spaced from and rising toa higher level than the discharge end of the sluice and adapted to receive at the ascending portion of its sur-m face the continuous flow from the sluice and to carry over the high part of its surface a portion of the flow fixed by the speed of the roller, the remainder of the' flow spilling oli' the surface of the roller, an inclined gutter at the descending portion of the surface of the roller, and an-air jet arranged to -discharge across the lower end of the gutter.
The invention also comprises the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.
In the following description reference will be made to the accompanying drawings forming'part hereof and in which Figure 1 is'a plan view with the cover re moved.
Yindicating the similar parts.
1 is an inclined sluic'e at the lower end of which fluid or li uid is continuously discharged. The Hui or liquid is supplied' by a pipe 2 to a reservoir 3 having aballle 4 and from this reservoir the fluid or liquid flows in a series of sluices 1. The breasts 5a at the entrances to the sluices may be made of bakelite or other porous material adapted to insure uniform distribution between the 55. Various sluices. 5 is a revolving roller having its curved surface spaced from and rising to a higher level than the discharge end of the sluice 1, and adapted to receive at the descending portion of its surface the continuous flow from the sluice'l, and to carry over the high part or summit of its curved sur" face a portion of the flow fixed by the speed of rotation of the roller, the remainder of the flow spilling olf the cylindrical surface `m;
and over the sides of the roller. .The receptacle 6 receives the liquid or fluid rejected by the roller and that spills from the roller, and it is conveyed by pipe-7 to the pan 8 from which it can be returned or recirculated through the reservoir 3. 9 is an inclined gutter receiving at the descending portion of` the surface of the roller the liquid or fluid carried over the top thereofand varying in quantity according tothe speed of rotation of the roller. 10 is an ain tube arranged to discharge across the lower end of the gutter and'create a spray as indicated in Fig. 3.- Air is supplied by pipe 11,-through passage 12 to pipe 13 and thence through a hole in pipe 13 and duct 14 to jet 10. The elements 15 are v shown as held to place by springs 16.' 17 is a cover shown as provided with openings 18 for the passage of the jets; The rollers 5 are mounted on a shaft 19, which can be driven by some part ofthe machine which feeds the material to be sprayed, so that the quantity of fluid or 'liquid sprayed is controlled and increased and diminished by the speed of the l machine, and when the machine stops the spray stops and when themachine starts the spray starts. -v It may be remarked that by reason of the feed of the liquid to the roller 5, the liquid or fluid may be of any character, because it is not picked up or pulled from a body by the roller, but is fed onto the ascending portion of the surface of the roller. Again since the quantity of liquid or fluid diverted to the gutter depends upon the speed or revolution 2 f f l 1,854,8se`
\ of the roller, no orifices are employed for controlling the feed and their disadvantages and difficulties are avoided. Inasmuch as the liquid or fluid flows onto the surface of the roller and spills at the ends ofthe roller and down from the surfaceL it follows that the roller does not-have to separate the liquid or Huid by pulling it from a body of liquid or Huid as would be the case ifbthe roller dipped in a quiescent body of liquid or-fluid. Consequently all kinds of fluids or liquids can be employed eventhose that are relatively viscous.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art p to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement and matters of mere form Without departing from the spiritJ of the invention which is not limited to such matters or otherwise than the prior Aart and the appended claim may require.
I claim:
A spraying machine comprising in com bnation an inclined sluice from the lower end of Which fluid or liquid is continuously discharged, a revoluble roller -`having its curved surface spaced from and rising to a higher level than the discharge end of the sluice and adapted to receive at the ascendc ing portion of its surface the continuous flow from the sluice and to carry over the high part of its surface a portion of the flow fixedk bythe speed of the roller, the remainder of the flow spilling olf the surface off the roller, an inclined gutter at the descending portion of the surface of the roller, andan air jet arranged to Idischarge across the lower end of the gutter. i
