This invention relates to a device or means for protecting blotting sheets used in blotting ads. p Blotting pads usually consist of a rectangular flat base provided at each of its corners with a corner piece which forms a pocket on the upper surface of the said flat base, said pockets receiving the corners of the blotting sheets to hold the latter in place. A defect attending such pads is that owing to the writers arm or sleeve having continual rubbing contact with the lower edge of the blotting sheet assembly, the exposed portions of the blotting sheets at the said edge, between the pockets, becomes curled up and torn.

The present invention has in view to overcome the foregoing defect by providing extremely simple means, capable of very cheap manufacture, for fitting to any existing pad for protecting the said exposed edge portion of the blotting sheet assembly; while, in a modification, the invention provides protecting means which is incorporated in the con- 0 struction of the pad to form a permanent part thereof.

According to the invention, means is provided which resides or is adapted to reside along at least one edge of the blotting sheet assembly, said means being of strip-like form and shaped to lie upon the top surface of said blotting sheet assembly adjacent the said edge and to extend around and embrace and shield the corresponding edge of all the sheets of said sheet assembly at that particular marginal part to be protected.

In order that the invention may be readily understood, reference is directed to the accompanying description of the several different modes of carrying out said invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a broken view of a device provided according to one embodiment of said invention, shown flattened; and,

Referring firstly toFigure 1, I provide a strip 1 of rubber, celluloid, thin sheet-metal or any other suitable material'cut to the shape 1 shown. Said strip is folded along the longi tudinal centre line (shown dotted) and is cut-away 0r gapped for instanceby a V -cut 2 at each of its ends approximately in line with the aforesaid line of folding, so that the upper portion 1a of the folded stripihas,.ateach ofits-ends, a tongue 3. The said tongues 3 are adapted to fit into the'pockets of the usual pad or holder, presented by the corner pieces 4, asshownin Figure 2, the gaps 2 in the strip ends giving clearance for those por tions of the said corner pieces which extend for a-distance along theblotter edge. The under portionlbof the strip residing below thebase 5 of the blotterpad may be of any desired width, conveniently about the-same width as the upper portion," and said under portion may have its under surface covered" with serrated or plain rubber, felt or any other suitable material which will afford a grip on a desk orthelike without fear of damaging the surface thereof. Said under portion 15 need not necessarily be made to lie below the blotter pad base 5'however, but 7 may embrace merely the edges of the blotting sheets 6 and lie above the said base-5, i. e. be-

tween thelowermost blotter sheet and the said I base. The said under portion 1?) could be made very narrow if'so desired, or aslarge as may be required; for instance, where it is intended: for said under portion to reside belowv the'blotterpad base 5, it would be made approximately equal in area to the said base so as to present a non-slip under surface oflarge area to said base, this construction beingparticularly applicable to existing pads which have no provision on their un-. der surfaces to eliminate slip when used on a desk or the like.

Although the foregoing description is directed to one edge only of the blotter sheet assembly, it is to be understood that any or all of the edges thereof can be protected in the same manner.

Figures 1a and 1?) illustrate how the ends of the strip 1 may be modified instead of being of the shape above described.

As shown in Figure 1a the ends of the strip may be made of a stepped shape as indicated at 26 so as to form a tongue portion 12 on the end of the upper portion 1a only.

On the other hand, instead of forming a V-shaped cut in each end, a narrow slit 2a (Figure 11)) may be made from each end of the strip so as to form the rectangular shaped terminations 1m and 1y.

The foregoing shapes are, of course, understood to be purely illustrative because the shape or design of the ends may be varied provided the strip has a length along its portion 1a which is greater than its length along the line of the fold so as to provide a tongue at each end'of said portion 1a to fit in the corner pockets of a blotter pad.

The doubled strip may be engaged on the blotter pad in the manner described with out being fixedly secured thereto in any manner so as to be readily detachable.

Alternately, the lower portion l of the strip may be fixedly secured by adhesive or by means of fasteners of any suitable form to the base 5 of the blotter pad.

I claim 1. As an article of manufacture, a guard for protecting the exposed edges of the blotting sheets of blotting pads of the type having pocket members at the corners thereof to receive the corners of the blotting sheets, comprising a member of sheet material folded upon itself into substantially U-shaped cross section to provide top and bottom portions and a connecting web portion adapted, respectively to overlie, underlie and to extend across the edge of a sheet to be protected, said member being provided with slots extending inward from the ends thereof in line with the connecting web port-ion to provide a tongue at each end of each of said top and bottom 5 portions for insertion within the pocket members of the pad to retain the guard in assembly with the pad with the connecting web portion of the guard extending across the edge of the blotting sheet between the corner pockets.

2. A guard as set forth in claim 1 in which the edges of the sheet defining the slots diverge outwardly to provide outwardly tapering tongues for facile insertion within the pocket members of the pad.
